Beyond scientific research: tracing the contributions Ernest Rutherford made to the next generation of scientistsArmstrong, Andrew A. 16 August 2006 (has links)
Before his death in 1937, Ernest Rutherford discovered the rate of radioactive decay of
atoms. In 1911 he proposed the nuclear structure of the atom, and in 1919 he
successfully split the nucleus of an atom. Rutherford also achieved success when
advising his students to follow his research method in nuclear physics. As a faculty
advisor to research students, Rutherford advised courses, research topics, and
experimental research. To determine whether Rutherford made an impact on his
students, this study focused on the relationship between Rutherford and 24 researchers
and students at McGill University, the University of Manchester, and Cambridge
University. Rutherford had a significant impact through his advising efforts at each
institution and contributed to the success of his students. This study may not include a
complete list of students at each institution because of a lack of records at each
institution. Instead, this study focused on the students included in the Rutherford
biographies.
The study included a content analysis on Rutherford biographies and memoirs
from students under RutherfordÂs direct influence at McGill University, the University of
Manchester, and Cambridge University. Historical information from J.L. Heilbron,
David Wilson, and J.G. Crowther supplied the timeline at each institution where Rutherford conducted research. The results show an overwhelming contribution by
RutherfordÂs leadership in the direction of his students. Rutherford made a significant
impact in the research direction of all his students examined in this study, including eight
research students under Rutherford that were later honored with a Nobel Prize.

The Boundaries of Womanhood: Lesbian and Non-lesbian Feminist Opinions about TranssexualsKendel, Monica Phillipina Rose Marie 07 May 2014 (has links)
Feminists of the past two and a half decades have been influential in the
debates about the meaning of womanhood. Transsexualism as a state of being,
and transsexuals themselves, have periodically presented challenging issues
to the discussion. As a result, the boundaries of womanhood are being
questioned and membership in sex and gender categories are being contested
by transsexuals and non-transsexuals within feminist debates.
Conflicts arise when questions of transsexuals' womanhood come to the
forefront, and one controversy centres on whether sex and gender statuses
change for transsexuals. Do male-to-female transsexuals become women (if
ever)? Do male-to-female transsexuals become female (if ever)? Should
transsexual women be included in women-only events? The last question
stirs the debate that has been brewing in feminist communities since the
1970s. And because women-only events are largely organized and attended by
lesbians, lesbians have often been at the forefront of feminist debates about
the womanhood of transsexual women. There has been much lively debate
in the 1970s and again in the 1990s on the topic of transsexualism, however
there has been little research specifically looking at feminist attitudes about
transsexuals.
To expand our knowledge in these areas, the concepts of womanhood
is explored from a feminist perspective. A context is provided with a review
of radical feminist, radical lesbian feminist and lesbian separatist theories.
Feminist literature on the issue of transsexualism is presented to show the
many sides of the debate. Praxis of radical feminism is illustrated using the
Michigan Womyn's Music Festival as an example of women-only space, a
model of feminist-separatist utopia and a site where transsexual women have
not been welcome. With this foundation, analysis of survey question results are presented to determine whether feminist attitudes, as presented in the
literature, aptly reflect non-lesbian and lesbian feminist perspectives on
transsexuals' womanhood. This thesis concludes with a discussion of the
findings and suggestions for further study. / Graduate / 0626

The Grammaticalization of Only and JustJanuary 2015 (has links)
abstract: Abstract
Grammaticalization theory provides a framework for analyzing language change. This thesis uses the concepts relevant to grammaticalization theory in an examination of ‘only’ and ‘just’ to determine how changes in their usage conform to the theory. After an introduction providing a sampling of the myriad ways ‘only’ and ‘just’ are used in Modern English, I provide an overview of grammaticalization theory in Chapter 2. Included in this chapter are a history of the major concepts of grammaticalization theory, an explanation of the commonly-accepted parameters and tools used to test and demonstrate grammaticalization, and a brief discussion of current arguments against grammaticalization theory. Chapter 3 presents my analysis of ‘only’ and ‘just’. I show that ‘only’ has grammaticalized from an adjective to a more grammatical adjective, from an adjective to an adverb, and from an adjective to a complementizer. I then show that ‘just’ has grammaticalized from an adjective to a more grammatical adjective and from an adjective to an adverb. Although some proponents of grammaticalization theory question the grammaticalization pathways leading from adjective to adverb and from adjective to complementizer, I argue that in the cases of ‘only’ and ‘just’ these pathways do indeed exist. I use the Oxford English Dictionary and corpora to support and demonstrate the validity of my argument. / Dissertation/Thesis / Masters Thesis English 2015
