L'inexplicable chez Samuel Beckett : Dieux du chaos et monstres inconcevables / The inexplicable at Samuel Beckett : Gods of chaos and inconceivable monstersJeon, Seung-Hwa 25 September 2018 (has links)
The purpose of this thesis is to show how clichés collapse and exists the inexplicable that Beckett notices as a condition of existence that coexists with other conditions, light and darkness ; and as chaos, composed by art destroying prejudices and clichés, and seen by Gilles Deleuze and Félix Guattari. This demonstration therefore proposes, on the one hand, to examine the fall of the gods of creation, sources of truth, wisdom and progress, and their denaturation into gods of chaos, and on the other hand, the elements abnormal writing, likely to be named monsters, because of their strangeness and ambiguity that prevent them from being defined. As for the gods of chaos, it will be the parody of the Christian God, Jesus Christ and Prometheus the inventor, and their degradation by which the creator will no longer be distinguished from his creature. As for the inconceivable monsters, the conditions of the monsters and the negative reactions towards them, which paradoxically imply the monstrualization, will be revealed by the theme of flowers, and the two mythical images, androgynous and Siamese, will reveal the impossibility of the identification or the significance, and the state of the interstage or confusion.

This study explores how legal guardian ́s look on its role and responsibility relative to unaccompanied children and youths. It also explore the actions that have been taken, lifting potential difficulties, and investigating the motives and driving forces the legal guardian have for their commitment. A historical and current overview of the situation of unaccompanied children has been developed, focusing on changes in the years 2015 to 2017. To highlight health-promoting aspects of unaccompanied children and young people, previous research is presented on how they look at home, belonging, school and safety. Research on volunteer community workers is presented with focus on legal guardians and a review of what is expected of legal guardians and their efforts. The study has a qualitative approach with semi structured interviews. The result shows that legal guardian usually have altruistic motives for their commitment, but that there are also other theoretical perspectives on the legal guardian ́s driving forces and motivation. It also turns out that the hardest experience is the ability to help and that the legal guardian ́s, during certain periods, commute between hope and desperation.

A Portrait of the Artist as an Angry Young Man: Masculinities and the Male Artist in Twentieth-Century British LiteratureGan, Wanghui 25 September 2020 (has links)
Influenced by post-Lacanian psychoanalytic feminist theory and Judith Butler’s theories of gender performativity, this project examines three fictional brooding male writers from three separate periods of twentieth-century Ireland and Britain and their performances of authenticity, authority, and exceptionalism as artist figures. By tracing a sociohistorical arc and conducting close literary analyses, this project argues that the myth of white male artistic genius is derived from the power and privilege of a cult of individuality that can be used to excuse and justify harmful behaviour and that comes at the exclusion and expense of those outside this highly specific version of hegemonic masculinity. James Joyce’s A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man, John Osborne’s Look Back in Anger, and Sarah Kane’s Blasted undermine the myth of male artistic genius by exposing the artificial and theatrical nature of the notion of “authenticity” and the posture of being countercultural when one is part of a dominating elite.

“I’m not crazy”: the history and development of the American gaslight filmAlston, Dana William 11 August 2021 (has links)
This thesis examines portrayals of gaslighting toward women in American film. Gaslighting, a form of psychological manipulation that frequently targets women, has a long history in cinema, and narratives that foreground the practice have developed a series of narrative and stylistic conventions. These conventions frequently simplify the realities of psychological abuse toward women, representing gaslighting and its perpetrators with ideologically patriarchal undertones. Such undertones have changed over time, often in ways that reflect cultural and political shifts within American society. Gaslight films’ female protagonists have demonstrated more agency, while the perpetrators have grown steadily more monstrous as the subgenre shifted from a melodramatic to horrific mode. Using a genre studies approach to survey these constantly evolving tropes across three eras, I argue that the gaslight film is a subgenre that reflects growing attitudes toward and awareness of gender roles and psychological abuse towards women. Concerns involving representations of female agency and the ability of genres to concisely communicate hegemonic, patriarchal ideologies lie beneath this analysis.

“WE NEED TO HAVE MORE CONVERSATIONS ABOUT MASCULINITY”: A PHENOMENOLOGICAL EXPLORATION OF MASCULINITY AND THE UNDERGRADUATE EXPERIENCES OF LATINO MENUnknown Date (has links)
This study addresses existing gaps in the literature concerning the undergraduate experiences of Latino men students as examined through an intersectional and masculinities-based lens. Due to a dearth in literature centering the exclusive study of Latino men in higher education, researchers are challenged to offer a comprehensive understanding of their postsecondary experiences and outcomes. Therefore, the purpose of this phenomenological study was to understand how currently enrolled Latino men undergraduate students make meaning of their undergraduate experiences. Relying on the lived experiences of Latino undergraduate men, this study collected data through three sets of interviews (Seidman, 2013). The examination of data was considered through the Multilevel Model of Intersectionality (Núñez, 2014a), which allowed for the participants’ lived experiences to be examined at multiple levels of intersectionality and centered in social oppression and privilege. The findings center the role of the Latino family, navigating and overcoming pan-ethnic discrimination, and evolved understandings of masculinity. Recommendations include the incorporation of the Latino family into the postsecondary experiences of Latino men, discontinuing the study of Latino masculinities as a homogenous concept, and equity based institutional policies that center the intersectional needs of Latino men undergraduate students related to academic and personal success. / Includes bibliography. / Dissertation (PhD)--Florida Atlantic University, 2021. / FAU Electronic Theses and Dissertations Collection

The unity of Biblical manFoxley, Elizabeth 01 January 1975 (has links)
Various religious ideas are expressed in both the Old and the New Testament. Although these ideas do not express a single theology within the Biblical literature, some basic ideas do reoccur. Among these are notions about man, his relationship to God and to society. These concepts of man and his relationships may be brought together to form a composite "man" which might be referred to as Biblical Man. There are contemporary views of Biblical Man which may not in fact be Biblical. Such a view is the notion that man is formed of two or three {listinct parts: body and soul, or body, soul and spirit. It is the purpose of this thesis to discover whether or not the popular concept of body, soul, and spirit representing three distinct parts of man is Biblical. In order to develop this thesis, both the Old and the New Testaments have been researched for ideas pertaining to Biblical Man. Of importance to the background of New Testament thought are the "extraneous" compositions comprising the Apocrypha and Pseudepigrapha. Therefore, this literature has also been reviewed. The first topic covered in this investigation is "Man in Community. This has been examined in order to understand Biblical Man's relationship to society. Other topics covered are the three terms which are popularly conceived as forming man's trichotomy: "body," "soul," and "spirit." Each of these topics have been reviewed in the Old Testament, the inter-testamental literature, and finally, the New Testament, for ideas pertaining to man. This investigation has included a variety of scholarly works in addition to the English translations of the Biblical and non- Biblical literature. For the purpose of uniformity, English translations of terms researched have been used with the exception of direct quotations. Also, where necessary for clarification, the Hebrew and Greek transliterations have been used.
