Corner Flows in Free Liquid FilmsStocker, Roman, Hosoi, A.E. 24 August 2004 (has links)
A lubrication-flow model for a free film in a corner is presented. The model, written in the hyperbolic coordinate system ξ = x² – y², η = 2xy, applies to films that are thin in the η direction. The lubrication approximation yields two coupled evolution equations for the film thickness and the velocity field which, to lowest order, describes plug flow in the hyperbolic coordinates. A free film in a corner evolving under surface tension and gravity is investigated. The rate of thinning of a free film is compared to that of a film evolving over a solid substrate. Viscous shear and normal stresses are both captured in the model and are computed for the entire flow domain. It is shown that normal stress dominates over shear stress in the far field, while shear stress dominates close to the corner.

Characterization of LiNi₀.₅Mn₁.₅O₄ Thin Film Cathode Prepared by Pulsed Laser DepositionXia, Hui, Lu, Li, Ceder, Gerbrand 01 1900 (has links)
LiNi₀.₅Mn₁.₅O₄ thin films have been grown by pulsed laser deposition (PLD) on stainless steel (SS) substrates. The crystallinity and structure of thin films were investigated by X-ray diffraction (XRD). Microstructure and surface morphology of the thin films were examined using a field-emission scanning electron microscope (FESEM). The electrochemical properties of the thin films were studied with cyclic voltammetry (CV) and galvanostatic charge-discharge in the potential range between 3.0 and 4.9 V. The electrochemical behavior of LiNi₀.₅Mn₁.₅O₄ thin films showed reversible capacity above 4.7 V and good cycle performance up to 50 cycles. / Singapore-MIT Alliance (SMA)

Meta-Stability of Crystalline Thin-Film Photovoltaic DevicesJanuary 2010 (has links)
abstract: Given the growing market in solar energy, specifically by the thin-film technologies, it is imperative that adequate and accurate standards be developed for these newer photovoltaic devices. Cadmium Telluride, CdTe, one of the major players in the thin-film PV industry is currently rated and certified using standards that have been developed under the context of older technologies. The behavior of CdTe has been shown to be unique enough to suggesting that standards be revised. In this research, methods built on previous industry and independent studies are used to identify these unique behaviors. As well new methods are developed to further characterize CdTe modules in the context of current standards. Clear transient and meta-stable behavior is identified across modules from four different commercial manufacturers. Conclusions drawn from this study show illumination and temperature hysteresis effects on module ratings. Furthermore, suggestions for further study are given that could be used to define parameters for any reexamination of module standards. / Dissertation/Thesis / M.S.Tech Electrical Engineering 2010
