The role of wine tourism in the marketing of wineries in the Stellenbosch wine route of South Africa

Commercial reality demands that the South African wine industry convert from its current production orientation to a marketing orientation, by drawing on all new and existing marketing channels in order to ensure its continued success. International research has shown that wine tourism can add value to and benefit a winery as a direct marketing channel. This study investigated the role that wine tourism currently plays within the marketing strategies of wineries in the Stellenbosch Wine Route of South Africa. Findings of the exploratory research indicated that many wineries do not comprehend the positive influence of wine tourism and view it as a secondary marketing activity. It is concluded that South African wine marketers could profit from utilising wine tourism as an integral part of their marketing strategy in order to maintain and increase their share of the alcoholic beverage market. / Business Management / M. The topic of this thesis is marketing of gastronomic travel agency. Gastronomic tourism is currently among the tourism trends. Based on the growing potential, in this paper will be presented fictitious gastronomic travel agency selling gastronomic tours. The main objective is to propose a marketing campaign of specific gastronomic tours. The marketing campaign will be set up to address, engage and make customers to purchase offered services. The campaign is therefore able to offer to potential customers exactly what they desire. The marketing approach is not the same to everyone, it reflects the consumer and media behavior of different target groups. Thanks to the proposed campaign the competitiveness of the company will be increased, profit will be gained, it means voluminous sales of offered tours and strong position in the market will be obtained.

Abstract in English, Afrikaans and Xhosa / The problem investigated in this study is the lack or poor use of local stories by destination managers in the marketing of their destinations. This neglect of the potential use of local stories limits the potential market share, especially of small towns. This study is based on the role of storytelling in the marketing sphere as a whole and specifically in the tourism industry. Key components of storytelling in marketing are identified and analysed along with existing narrative marketing models. In the process of developing and implementing a narrative-based destinations marketing model, the focus is on small towns in South Africa. The study aims to achieve the following: fill the void in the South African literature in destination marketing; document the storytelling process; and develop a workable, strategic destination marketing model, and implement this model. In achieving the secondary objectives, the study succeeded in its primary objective, namely to develop a three-legged pot or story pot (“driepootpot”) marketing model. The narrative destination marketing model was developed through quantitative and qualitative research in area served by the Drakenstein Municipality, located in the Western Cape in South Africa. A combination of phenomenology and grounded theory was used to analyse the data. / Ingxaki ephandwayo kwesi sifundo kukunqaba okanye kukusetyenziswa buthathaka kwamabali endawo ngabaphathi beendawo xa beququzelela ukuthengwa kweendawo zabo. Hierdie verwaarlosing van die potensiële gebruik van plaaslike verhale en stories beperk die potensiële markaandeel van veral klein dorpies. Hierdie studie is gegrond op die rol van vertelkuns (storytelling) in die bemarkingsfeer as geheel en spesifiek in die toerismebedryf. Sleutelkomponente van storievertelling in bemarking word geïdentifiseer en ontleed saam met bestaande narratiewe bemarkingsmodelle. In die proses om ’n verhaal-gebaseerde bemarkingsmodel vir bestemmings te ontwikkel en te implementeer, val die fokus op klein dorpies in Suid-Afrika. Die studie het ten doel om die volgende te bereik: die leemte te vul in die Suid-Afrikaanse literatuur ten opsigte van bestemming bemarking; die verhaalproses te dokumenteer; en ’n werkbare, strategiese bemarkingsmodel vir bestemmings te ontwikkel vir implementering. Deur die sekondêre doelwitte te behaal, het die studie daarin geslaag om sy primêre doel te bereik, naamlik om ’n driepootpot-verhaalbemarkingsmodel te ontwikkel. Common city attributes and contact employees : a case study of Indianapolis, Indiana

Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI) / Indianapolis is considered by many a competitive, large population city with incredible resources for business conferences and event tourism. The city’s flagship event, The Indianapolis 500, has paved the way for the city’s success. With initiative, planning, construction, and implementation the city’s tourism prowess has grown over the past three decades. Indianapolis has become host to a plethora of mid-size and large conferences every year, a regular on the host circuit for the NCAA Final Four, host of the annual Big Ten basketball tournament and most recently the host of the 2012 Super Bowl. Indianapolis continuously attempts to bring in more events every year. Not many residents get to see, or are even aware of, the associates busy at work attempting to fill hotel rooms, conference centers and stadiums. The Destination Marketing Organizations (DMOs) of the city are constantly working and tweaking strategies to increase exposure and get tourists excited about visiting Indianapolis. However, it is difficult to identify what truly separates Indianapolis as a tourist destination from any other competitive, second-tier population, landlocked city. Centrality within the country and the tourism infrastructure may be argued, but a representative from nearly any city in competition with Indianapolis may make a counterpoint to most resources. Instead of running in circles with this argument, this thesis looks to probe into a resource for Indianapolis that could be turned into a strong marketing tool for tourism: its employees. The overall purpose of this study was to examine the perceptions of resident contact employees in the food service and lodging industries concerning Indianapolis’ tourism attributes, and their relation to Indianapolis’ destination marketing and managerial strategies.
