Němčina jako zprostředkující jazyk při překladu Haškova Švejka do španělštiny / German as a Mediating Language in the Translation of Hašek's Švejk into Spanish

Vavroušová, Petra January 2013 (has links)
The purpose of this thesis is to describe the reception of Hašek's Švejk in Spain in the 20th century. The theoretical part deals with the phenomenon of indirect translations (it distinguishes between the second-hand translation and the authorial compilative translation), the problematic of metatexts and the reader's reception. The empirical part describes the "adventure" of Hašek's Švejk in the Czech and German milieu and focuses on the reception of the translations by A. Janés (1980) and M. Zgustová (2008) in Spain. Then, an analysis of censorship reports dedicated to Švejk and critical reviews of Spanish translations of this book and a short commentary of interviews with the two translators and editors follow. As a methodological instrument for the micro-textual contrastive analysis of selected passages of Hašek's novel was used the Popovič's (1975, 1983) typology of stylistic shifts and changes in the translation. Key words: Švejk, Spain, indirect translations, mediating text, reception, censorship, reviews, micro-textual contrastive analysis, Zgustová, Janés

Les traductions françaises de l'espagnol et le marché du livre (1600-1660) : enquête sur une pratique d'écriture / French translations of spanish texts and the book market (1600-1660)

Schoenecker, Aurore 09 December 2017 (has links)
The literary influence exercised by Golden Age Spain on France in the first half of the 17th century is related to a very considerable mass of editorial activity. This thesis, which combines the history of the book and literary history, studies French translations of Spanish texts which circulated in France between 1600 and 1660 - translations concerning texts of all kinds (religious, literary, scientific, technical, etc.).In order to evaluate this editorial activity, a bibliometric enquiry must first be carried out. This enquiry allows us to reconstitute the history of of the circulation of this material in print. The principal centres of production are identified and the production of the workshops of the booksellers’ operating in this market are examined. The analysis then shifts to the activity of translation itself, in all its diversity. The profiles of the different principal translators from Spanish to French are laid out: the professional translator, the enlightened amateur, the printer, the cleric, the physician, etc. Particular attention is paid to men of letters who attempt to conciliate what is perceived as lowly hackwork with their literary ambitions. Finally, the translators’ practices themselves are the object of study, through comparison, using textual analysis as well as examining questions of format and layout, of different (concurrent or successive) translations of the same text. Account is thus made of the diverse motivations of these versions and the specificity of each writing project and publication. Taking as its base a large swathe of writing produced in French often neglected by literary history, this study of the penetration of Spanish culture in France and of the world of translators looks anew at the relation between writing and publication, as well as at the editorial role in the construction of literary legitimacy.

Atrave(s) and fronte(i)ras: la traducciâon del Portuguâes al Espaînol de la novella Brasilîena Adeus, Rio Doce

Unknown Date (has links)
The translation of Geny Vilas-Novas' novel Adeus, Rio Doce emphasizes the importance of promoting a literary exchange between Brazil and the Spanish-speaking world. This study analyses contemporary Brazilian literature and situates the author in the post-modern literary movement, stressing two post-colonial fundamental themes: emigration and feminine literature. Millions of undocumented emigrants from Latin America live nowadays in the United States displaced in the American society and leave suffering family members abandoned in their native countries. One of the roles of Latin- American women writers like Vilas-Novas is to reveal and denounce the subaltern conditions of this emigration movement in the globalization process, under the unusual perspective of those left behind. The linguistic and semantic challenges and difficulties faced during translation are a metaphor for the crossing of linguistic, cultural, social, and historical borders by Latin-Americans in search of better life opportunities. / by Clarisse Bandeira de Mello. / Thesis (M.A.)--Florida Atlantic University, 2008. / Includes bibliography. / Electronic reproduction. Ludwig Zinzendorf's political economy in the Habsburg monarchy, 1750-1774

Adler, Simon January 2018 (has links)
This study examines Ludwig Zinzendorf’s political economy and the intellectual inspiration of his thinking. Zinzendorf, a protégé of Kaunitz, was a sophisticated economic thinker in the mid eighteenth-century Habsburg monarchy who was part of the wider intellectual movement in Europe dedicated to understanding political economy and presenting it as an independent and important activity. Self- educated, polyglot and hard-working, Zinzendorf was formidably well read and impressively numerate. His output was detailed and analytical. With an exceptionally wide knowledge, he offered a more original way to discuss the economy than the essentially didactic approach of cameralist writers. He was a reformer dedicated to propagating the most advanced European ideas and practices. This study is divided into five chapters: chapter one covers the relationship between Zinzendorf and Kaunitz and Zinzendorf’s formative years in France from 1750 to 1752. The influence of French economic thinkers on Zinzendorf’s intellectual development, Jean-François Melon and Vincent de Gournay in particular, is the subject of chapter two. Chapter three is devoted to Zinzendorf’s German translation of John Law’s Money and Trade. The development of Zinzendorf’s ideas on state credit, notably the creation of a new stock exchange and political bank in the monarchy, modelled on the Bank of England, is discussed in chapter four. The final chapter examines how Zinzendorf operated as a sophisticated financial expert in the monarchy. He sought to provide a different kind of economic advice and attempted to open-up government to new concepts on the economy. He was influenced by the important contribution in France made by Gournay and his circle of writers in disseminating foreign ideas by publishing in French a range of economic texts from rival nations. Zinzendorf, it is argued, attempted to apply a moderate format of Gournay’s initiative in the monarchy.

Ensino de isometrias na educação básica: uma aplicação didática em sala de aula / Teaching isometrics in basic education: a didactic application in the classroom

Cona, Debora Costa 18 May 2017 (has links)
In this dissertation we present a sequence of non-traditional activities, focusing on the teaching and learning of Geometry, in particular regarding the Isometrics in the Plan, elaborated for elementary school students, and the result of its application to eight classes of 9th grade , As a way to develop students\' reasoning skills. We used for this experiment the Design Experiment, a teaching experiment based on continuous improvement, and Van Hiele\'s theory based on Adela Jaime-Pastor\'s (1993) doctoral thesis, with a series of activities elaborated and applied by the teacher/researcher involving the translations and the reflections, through the phases of learning and levels of reasoning that the students develop with the application of this theory. This experiment was divided in two moments, application with four classes of 9th grade in 2015 and application with four other groups of 9th grade in 2016, subdivided into two other situations, activities on translations and activities on reflections. The data of this experiment were obtained through the productions of the students, who worked in doubles, in the classroom, recorded through photos, videos and audios recorded by the researcher herself. We also used the paper dolls of Brigitte Servatius (1997), with which we worked on translations and reflections. The students participating in the experiment finalized it with solid notions of the characteristics of the isometries and a visible progress in their level of knowledge. The way the activities were carried out brought reflexes to the routine of these students in the classroom, making it evident that the search for situations that arouse the students\' interest in an innovative way can generate better results and the motivation of continuous learning.

The Lord of the Rings (LOTR) by John Ronald Reuel Tolkien (1892-1973) marked the birth of modern fantasy fiction as a genre when it was published in three volumes in the 1950s. The structure and writing techniques of LOTR have been imitated by many fantasy novels since then. / Constructing a trustworthy “Secondary World is one of the most important aims of modern fantasy novels. To reach that goal, novelists employ various methods to create such an independent existence. Tolkien’s techniques in building his Secondary World come largely from Philology, his specialized research area which studies the histories of, and relationships between, languages. An ingenious language system, named in this thesis as “fantastic language, is designed and embedded into the story of LOTR by Tolkien. It covers at least three aspects, namely archaism, invented languages and nomenclature. Archaism indicates and suggests a long history behind the Middle-earth; invented languages show how languages differ among various races; nomenclature is the intersection of the former two aspects. The interaction between the three aspects of the fantastic language enhances the inner logic of the Secondary World, making it appear to be more consistent and real. / This thesis will analyze and discuss different representations of Tolkien’s Secondary World by exploring four Chinese translations of fantastic language in LOTR with reference to specific features of Chinese language and literature. This thesis points out that the successful transformation and re-creation of a Secondary World depends on a thorough understanding of the author’s imagination, and a re-construction of a self-consistent logic compatible with the author’s design. / Detailed summary in vernacular field only. / Detailed summary in vernacular field only. / Detailed summary in vernacular field only. / 張甜. / "2013年7月". / "2013 nian 7 yue". / Thesis (M.Phil.)--Chinese University of Hong Kong, 2013. / Includes bibliographical references (leaves 194-211). / Electronic reproduction. / This thesis studies English translations of the chapter titles of the classical Chinese Zhanghui xiaoshuo (chapter-novel) Hong lou meng, also known as Dream of the Red Chamber or The Story of the Stone in the English-speaking world. It describes the changes made and effects achieved in different versions by different translators. The aim is to try to explain how the narrative and aesthetic functions of chapter titles influence both the processes of the author(s)’ writing and the translators’ rewriting, within the traditions of Chinese and Western fiction. The research covers nine versions in English and one version in German. The approach is eclectic: theories or concepts in translation, narratology, linguistic, etc. will be utilized whenever. Firstly, an introduction relevant to the selection of versions of the original and its translations will be given. Following the introduction is a review of previous studies on Hong lou meng, on its chapter titles, and the English translations of both the work itself and the chapter titles. The thesis will then study the origins and development of chapter titles in classical Chinese novels and in Western literature, find out the differences, and see if they share similar features or functions. Then it will go on to make comparison between the original chapter titles and their translations on the micro level, and discuss the narrative functions and aesthetic effects achieved by the translations, by studying changes made in the contents, form, and language of the chapter titles. In the thesis, the intricate relationships between chapter titles and chapter contents, both in the original work and in the translation will be described. After that, the thesis will focus on reader response. The translations of chapter titles will also be analyzed from cultural perspectives by examining culturally-loaded words in the original chapter titles and identifying Western culture embodied in their versions. Endangered by desire : T.G.H. Strehlow and the inexplicable vagaries of private passion

Hersey, Shane J., University of Western Sydney, College of Arts, School of Communication Arts January 2006 (has links)
This thesis is about the depth of colonisation through translation. I develop an analytic framework that explores colonisation and translation using the trope of romantic love and an experimental textual construction incorporating translation and historical reconstruction. Utilising both the first and the final drafts of “Chapter X, Songs of Human Beauty and Love-charms” in Songs of Central Australia, by T. Strehlow, I show how that text, written over thirty years and comprised of nine drafts, can be described as a translation mediated by the colonising syntax and grammar. My interest lies in developing a novel textual technique to attempt to illustrate this problem so as to allow an insight into the perspective of a colonised person. This has involved a re-examination of translation as something other than a transtemporal structure predicated on direct equivalence, understanding it instead as something that fictionalises and reinvents the language that it purports to represent. It begins by establishing an understanding of the historical context in which the translated text is situated, from both objective and personal viewpoints, and then foregrounds the grammatical perspective of the argument. Utilising the techniques and processes of multiple translation, Internet-based translation software, creative writing and historical reconstruction, it continues to consider the role of imagination and begins the construction of a visceral argument whereby the reader is encouraged to experience a cognitive shift similar to that understood by the colonised other, which is revealed in a fictional autobiography written by an imagined other. It concludes by considering the coloniser within the same context, using, as an example T. Strehlow, who had a unique understanding of the Arrernte language. Tracking his extensive alterations, revisions and excisions within his drafts of Chapter X, this thesis traces a textual history of change, theorising that the translator, no matter how "authentic", is as much translated by the text as she or he is a translator of the text. / Doctor of Philosophy (PhD)

A Study on the Artemis Fowl Series in the Context of Publishing Success

Lindve, Katarina January 2007 (has links)

A close reading of a series of books by Eoin Colfer that enjoyed universal success showed a change in the language between the books especially with respect to minor linguistic features such as choice of location and abstract vs. concrete language. The books are about the boy Artemis Fowl, and were presumably conceived as children’s books.

My original thesis was that the writer could not be sure of the success of the first book, but would definitely be aware of a worldwide audience for at least his third book, due to, for example, questions raised by the translators. If the original audience was expected to be Irish, or British, with very much the same cultural background as the author’s, the imagined subsequent audiences would change with success. My hope was to be able to show this by comparing linguistic features. And indeed, even though some changes could be due to coincidence there was a specific pattern evolving in the series, in that the originally Irish cultural background became less exclusive and more universal. The writer also used more details concerning locations, with added words to specify a place. What could thus be expected in the translated versions would be omissions and additions in especially the first book, but less need for that in later books. This, however, could not be proven in the Swedish translations. I thus conclude that the books became easier to follow for a wider, in this case Swedish, audience mostly because of efforts by the author and less because of the translator.
