This study aims to present the gastronomical turning point, a transition period in which cooking is replaced by gastronomy in Brazilian journalism. This transformation leads to changes in section (from female to culture and leisure), genre (from recipe to review and report), focus (from practice to discourse), space (from home to restaurant), protagonist (from home cook to chef) and approach (from ordinary to cultural). We analyzed, through a discoursive approach, two landmarks of this moment: the column À mesa como convém (1975-1997), at Jornal do Brasil, and the first version of Comida section (1988-1992), at Folha de S.Paulo. The frame of reference relies on two main authors: Michel Foucault, to explain the turning point as a discursive event, and Pierre Bourdieu, to explore the establishment of food journalism as a journalism subfield. It was necessary to collect texts published before the turning point to compare them, what led us to collect content published in both newspapers since 1960. Results show that there are three main recurring themes in the turning point: the review criteria, the beginning of the acknowledgment of the role of chefs and the pedagogy of consumption. As a genre that intends to guide to restaurants or reject them, reviews try to lead the reader at leisure time. Chefs begin to be known after the arrival of French professionals at Brazil. Pedagogy of consumption is the path found to broaden the reader’s knowledge in a still unknown zone.

Cesty z bezdomoví z pohledu respondentů / Pathways out of Homelessness from the Respondents Point of View

Hrdá, Karolína January 2015 (has links)
Presented thesis is called Pathways Out of Homelessness from the Respondents Point of View. It basis lays in the analysis of interviewes with nine respondents by so called grounded theory method. As an answer to the question - How formaly homeless people get back to the society from their point of view? - the model of Changeable identity emerged. Its description is the basis of this thesis. I clarify two positions "homeless person" and "person with full society membership" within it, I am observing the transformation from the first position to the second through the reintegration process. I follow influences that affect it. In conclusion, I discuss a question of the end of homelessness. Key words: identity, process of reintegration, the turning point, homeless person, end of the homelessness, full society membership

Higher order numerical methods for singular perturbation problems

Munyakazi, Justin Bazimaziki January 2009 (has links)
Philosophiae Doctor - PhD / In recent years, there has been a great interest towards the higher order numerical methods for singularly perturbed problems. As compared to their lower order counterparts, they provide better accuracy with fewer mesh points. Construction and/or implementation of direct higher order methods is usually very complicated. Thus a natural choice is to use some convergence acceleration techniques, e.g., Richardson extrapolation, defect correction, etc. In this thesis, we will consider various classes of problems described by singularly perturbed ordinary and partial differential equations. For these problems, we design some novel numerical methods and attempt to increase their accuracy as well as the order of convergence. We also do the same for existing numerical methods in some instances. We find that, even though the Richardson extrapolation technique always improves the accuracy, it does not perform equally well when applied to different methods for certain classes of problems. Moreover, while in some cases it improves the order of convergence, in other cases it does not. These issues are discussed in this thesis for linear and nonlinear singularly perturbed ODEs as well as PDEs. Extrapolation techniques are analyzed thoroughly in all the cases, whereas the limitations of the defect correction approach for certain problems is indicated at the end of the thesis. / South Africa

Lewis turning point as a threat to the Chinese economy?

Merzová, Linda January 2013 (has links)
The diplomma thesis deals with the Lewis turning point and its impact on the Chinese economy. The work is divided into three main chapters. The first chapter explains the basic concept ,,Lewis turning point" and its position in the global context. Besides W. A. Lewis is also mentioned in a number of other authors dealing with growth theories. Here it is primarily determined whether China has reached the Lewis turning point, which is the impact of this point on the Chinese economy, the labor market and what follows the development of the Chinese economy after reaching this point. The third part is found a connection between Lewis turning point and university/higher education. Part of this chapter are the specifics, trends and especially the problems of the university system in China. The conclusion of this chapter is devoted to a turning point, and its impact on education.

Les peintres féminins de la manufacture Sèvres (1850-1890). Une approche historique de l'émancipation des femmes par les arts / Women painters of the manufactory of Sèvres (1850-1890). A historical approach to the emancipation of the women through art

Mazighi, Ratiba 21 October 2011 (has links)
The following thesis aims at studying all the feminine artists who worked in the Sèvres factory between 1850 and 1900. This period is a turning-point fort this institute on the administrative level as much as on the artistic one, because it represents a new era with the birth of a brend new style.Besides, more and more women working in Sèvres take part in exhibitions and workshops. Some of these women were particularly noted for their skills and their effort, while at this time the whole society was not interested by women condition. That's why this thesis will also throw light on some works with these ideas in mind. From the artistic viewpoint, the study particularly attracts our attention on each artist's specialties, styles and tastes. Despite the obvious global harmonization, due to the place of production of this factory, some differences appear. The first part concerns the artist's biographies. Their studies, their origins, their working conditions, but also their parts in artistic events will be analyzed. The second part will deal with the works from the stylistic analysis point of view and their impact (the fame reached by the artist through the work, but also the conscious or unconscious, direct or indirect message brought by the artist). Finally, the third part represents a descriptive catalogue of the works. It was established with the help of the inventory registers kept in the archives of the Sèvres factory.

The turning point of executives turned coach : a microemancipatory subjectivation process

Moreau, Fabien 27 October 2017 (has links)
Some executives, facing an economical and managerial system that doesn’t suit them anymore, chose to leave their position in a structure to become coaches. Beyond the managerial norms of career change, we explain that it is a turning point. This change of career, within the Critical Management Studies movement, and with a Foucauldian power perspective, is interpreted here as them reaching saturation point, due to the effects of subjectivation related to managerial governmentality. Those former executives, especially young and middle-aged managers, find themselves gaining a critical detachment. Furthermore, we notice a phenomenon of microemancipation through being coached … in the training of becoming a coach, by reappropriating the techniques of the care of the self. This research process involves Grounded Theory and life narratives. Firstly, we worked on phenomenological texts, then on an a posteriori coding by themes, and finally on a critical discourse analysis. Our resulting theoretical framework is anchored on a population of 25 former executives who have become coaches. It underlines a generic process with differences related to criteria such as gender, age when the career change happens, previous professional experience and position (manager or consultant).

Aktad och Föraktad : En kvalitativ studie av kända svenska mäns självbiografier om missbruk / Fame and Shame : A  qualitative study on addiction-related autobiographies by Swedish male celebreties

Wisaeus, Anna, Lindgren, Maria January 2023 (has links)
Addiction and drug dependency have become widespread social problems in all layers of society. While there is always a stigma around drug abuse, the number of public figures willing to share their experiences on the issue has increased. The purpose of the study was to analyse the autobiographies of seven famous Swedish men, writing about their addiction, using qualitative thematic text analysis. We have explored how we can gain a greater understanding of drug use and its causes, and how it is portrayed in autobiographies. The analysis contains selected explanatory models (comorbidity, self-medication, career model, shame and turning point) that social workers use when describing how and why a person is using drugs. Results have been coded and thematized in order to answer the questions at hand. The results show that stories on recovery from drug use are often quite similar, albeit with individual differences. The results give an insight into addiction which can help understanding and helping people affected by addiction.

Det stora vägskälet : gymnasieelevers upplevelse och planerade val inför nästa fas i livet / The great crossroads : upper secondary school students experience and planned choice for the next phase in life

Kärrström, Petra, Nilsson, Ida January 2021 (has links)
The turning point from upper secondary school can be understood as a definitive crossroadswith an abundance of choices for young people. The purpose of this study was to, through aquantitative survey, study how students in year three of the science, social sciences andeconomics program in Stockholm County planned and motivated their choice for the next phasein life, and to see how this differed based on the background factors gender, ethnicity and placeof residence, as well as to get an overview of how upper secondary school students experiencethe turning point from upper secondary school and how they see their own horizons for action. The results have then been analysed based on Hodkinson & Sparkes Careership Theory (1997,2008). The results showed that ethnicity as well as the students' place of residence to someextent made a difference in how the students planned their educational and career choices. Thechoice to study, work or take a sabbatical was mainly motivated by interest, the need for a breakfrom studies and to further plan for their future. We also concluded from the results of the studythat the majority of respondents experienced high to some satisfaction with their plannedchoice. Grades were what the students experienced as most limiting in planning for their future.

Numerical Investigation of Internal Wave-Vortex Dipole Interactions

Blackhurst, Tyler D. 14 March 2012 (has links) (PDF)
Three-dimensional linear ray theory is used to investigate internal waves interacting with a Lamb-Chaplygin pancake vortex dipole. These interactions involve waves propagating in the same (co-propagating) and opposite (counter-propagating) horizontal directions as the dipole translation. Co-propagating internal waves in the vertical symmetry plane between the vortices of the dipole can approach critical levels where the wave energy is absorbed by the dipole or where the waves are overturned and possibly break. As wave breaking cannot be simulated with this linear model, changes in wave steepness are calculated to aid in estimating the onset of breaking. Counter-propagating internal waves in the vertical symmetry plane can experience horizontal and vertical reflections, including turning points similar to waves in two-dimensional steady shear. Wave capture is also a possible effect of either type of interaction, depending on initial wave properties and positioning relative to the vortex dipole. Away from the vertical symmetry plane, a spanwise converging (focusing) and diverging (defocusing) of wave energy is observed in co- and counter-propagating interactions as symmetric off-center rays interact with the dipole's individual vortices. Some off-center rays experience multiple horizontal refractions similar to wave trapping.

Fantini, Céline 12 1900 (has links)
This research describes and discusses the emotional path of ex-offenders involved in a process of restorative justice. The emotional path is tackled from the perspective of "lifecourse" analysis. We met four former offenders sentenced to a prison term, and living in the community at the moment of our interviews. In order to interpret their emotional life course, the interviews were conducted in depth and in a non-directive approach. Participants performed either a Victim-Offender-Encounter (VOE), a face-to-face experience with a victim, or direct atonement with their victim. The analysis of our empirical data shows two distinct emotional periods in ex-offenders. Their path is characterized first by a closed state, then by an emotional opening. For each emotional state, we present its various emotional components and the resulting emotional changes. The transition, that is the passage between a closed state to a state of emotional openness, and the restorative justice experience, have been thoroughly studied. From these analysis emerged the concept of "emotional turning points," appearing as the keystone of the restorative pathway of former offenders. It is clear that an emotional turning point is considered a prerequisite for taking part in a restorative program, but also as a barometer of the restorative effects of the experiences.
