Protein expression in prostate cancer progress

Prostate cancer is one of the most common malignant tumors in solid organs of old men. Prostate-specific antigen (PSA) is a valuable prostate cancer biomarker that is now wildly used for population screening, diagnosis, and monitoring of patients with prostate cancer. Howere it is reported that PSA is not feasible to discriminate the progress of prostate cancer, so many investigators still works on developing new biomarker of prostate carcinoma. Here, we propose the study of differentially expressed prostate proteins in blood of patients. With the aid of two-dimensional polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (2-DE) and matrix-assisted laser desorption-induced time of flight (MALDI-TOF) mass spectrometry, comparison of normal men and prostate cancer patients serum proteins and analysis protein variation of different stages of prostate cancer serum. We find 31 and 17 protein spots overexpression in cancer development and after treatment, respectively. At present, with the aid of SWISS-PORT database and MALDI-TOF mass spectrometry, we had identified fibrinogen gamma chain, fibrinogen alpha/alpha-E chain, major histocompatibility complex (MHC), class I, C and Mayven were overexpressed in prostate cancer development, where Mayven is fist reported by us.

Electronic Properties of Heterostructures of 2D Materials: An Ab-Initio Study

Researchers have recently become interested in two-dimensional materials such as graphene, hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN), Transition Metal Dichalcogenides (TMDs), etc. Their 2D hexagonal structures result in unique properties, which make these materials attractive for scientists and engineers. In this work, we investigated the electronic properties of graphene, h-BN, and MoS2 based on density functional theory (DFT). We first studied the electronic properties of monolayers of different materials. We found a zero bandgap and observed massless Dirac Hamiltonian in graphene. For h-BN, a large bandgap at K-point was observed. Also, we observed the bandgap opening in MoS2 and a strong splitting of its bands. Then, we extended these studies to graphene and h-BN bilayers. For graphene bilayer, we observed a gapless material and massive Dirac fermions. For h-BN bilayer, an indirect bandgap was observed, smaller in comparison with its monolayer. The main focus of this study was the investigation of graphene/h-BN heterostructures for different stacking configurations. The suitability of h-BN as a substrate for graphene is due to its small lattice constant mismatch with graphene and its high insulating gap (~ 5 eV). Another important aspect to be observed in graphene/h-BN heterostructures is the gap opening brought by the h-BN layer proximity to the initially gapless graphene layer. We found the effect of bandgap opening in graphene/h- BN and determined the most stable configuration which is the AB[CB]. This work supports the findings of many researchers who demonstrate that graphene/h-BN heterostructures are very useful as building blocks for nanodevices with desirable electronic properties.

The presented PhD thesis is focused on the synthesis, characterization, and modifications of zeolites and zeolitic materials. The main interests are two-dimensional (2D) zeolites and modification of their interlamellar space. Presented work was performed at the Department of Synthesis and Catalysis at J. Heyrovský Institute of Physical Chemistry in Prague, Czech Republic under the supervision of Prof. Jiří Čejka. Zeolites are inorganic crystalline solids with a microporous framework structure. They are widely used as catalysts, sorbents, and ion-exchangers. Conventional zeolites have been recognized as three-dimensional (3D) tetrahedrally-connected frameworks. However, some of them are also known to exist in various layered forms (2D zeolites). Recently, the transformation of 3D germanosilicate UTL into layers (IPC-1P) has started a new branch in 2D zeolites chemistry. This chemically selective degradation of UTL framework was performed via acid hydrolysis. In the structure of this germanosilicate, Ge atoms are preferentially located in specific building units, double-four-rings (D4R), which connect dense silica layers.
