Mediated Public Diplomacy: How the Russian English-language news network RT framed the ongoing tension between Russia and the West that ensued from the Ukrainian crisis

Mediated public diplomacy plays an important role in attaining foreign policy objectives by communicating with foreign audiences in order to establish a dialogue intending to inform and influence. The Russian state-funded global network RT serves as an important tool of Russian mediated public diplomacy. Its purpose is not only to cover major global events that are often missed by the Western mainstream media, but also to apprise an international audience of an alternative pro-Russian perspective. Interestingly, although there are a few researches analysing Moscow's efforts to rebrand its international image in the last decade, there has been very little work done giving a good insight into Russian media. This dissertation seeks to participate in the discussion about public diplomacy in general by applying the framing theory as a tool of mediated diplomacy. A qualitative analysis of 97 articles discussing the effects of international sanctions imposed on Russia in the aftermath of the escalation of the Ukrainian crisis, revealed a constructed pro-Russian narrative. Several strategies are pursued to convince its audience about the rightness of the Russian stance and gain support for the Kremlin's assertions. Finally, RT aims to wipe out the demonisation of Putin and its administration and counterbalance the penetration of the West in its sphere of influence.

The Reception of Horace in the Courses of Poetics at the Kyiv Mohyla Academy: 17th-First Half of the 18th Century

For the first time, the reception of the poetic legacy of the Latin poet Horace (65 B.C.-8 B.C.) in the poetics courses taught at the Kyiv Mohyla Academy (17th-first half of the 18th century) has become the subject of a wide-ranging research project presented in this dissertation. Quotations from Horace and references to his oeuvre have been divided according to the function they perform in the poetics manuals, the aim of which was to teach pupils how to compose Latin poetry. Three main aspects have been identified: the first consists of theoretical recommendations useful to the would-be poets, which are taken mainly from Horace's Ars poetica. The second aspect is the use of Horace's poetry as a model of word usage, tropes, rhetorical figures, and metrical schemes. Finally, the last important aspect of the reception of Horace is how his works could be imitated and his words or dicta borrowed in the composition of poetry, in which students were expected to exercise as part of the poetics course. The research draws the conclusion that Horace's legacy was of paramount importance in the manuals analyzed: on the one hand the Mohylanian poetics teachers' tendency (after Renaissance literary theorists and critics) to consider poetry within rhetorical categories rendered Horace's Ars Poetica extremely congenial to them. On the other, Horace's ideas were extrapolated from their original context and at times modified to serve a moralistic and "utilitarian" conception of poetry, which considered the latter as an instrumental science that served the ends of moral philosophy. With its metrical virtuosity and brilliant verbal craftsmanship, Horace's poetry provided an excellent model for the introduction of Christian content. The analysis of the way pagan authors (Horace first and foremost) were elaborated in a Christian key in the poetry composed by Mohylanian teachers and pupils indicates that education (and with it the assimilation of the Classics) at the KMA was not extraneous to the integration of ancient learning in Christian thinking as it took place in the different confessional schools of contemporary Western Europe. / Slavic Languages and Literatures

The recent political and economic changes in Ukraine aroused interest in studying foreign languages. Though Czech is a language with a relatively small number of speakers, it has a substantial audience of learners in Ukraine. Among the reasons, one can surely mention close cultural and political relations between both countries and traditionally attractive image of the Czech republic as a target country for the Ukrainian migrants. The doctoral thesis meets the learning needs of a target group, which is currently being short of relevant learning materials of Czech. Beforehand it concerns adult learners studying Czech as a foreign language for strictly practical reasons (not as a subject of a high school curriculum), with a great deal of autonomy in their studying. The profile of the target group specifies the main parameters of the language textbook outlined in the doctoral thesis. Beside the general and particular theory of designing language textbooks, the following problems are also discussed: studying of close relative languages, differences between studying a foreign language and the second language, a foreign language on the early stages of learning/aquisition, self-study of foreign language and so on. This thesis deals with mixed hybrid Russian-Ukrainian language known as surzhyk with an emphasis on its reflection in contemporary Ukrainian literature. The aim of the thesis is to outline the basic features of the contemplation of literary surzhyk. The first part presents a general definition of the concept of surzhyk, its sociolinguistic definition, geographic and functional extension. Further on, it suggests the relationship between this phenomenon and its literary reflection - so-called literary (or also author's or conscious) surzhyk. The following section reviews the reflection of literary surzhyk in theoretical works, both linguistic and literally theoretical. The use of literary surzhyk is discussed in detail in the major monographs dedicated to this phenomenon (Artur Bracki, Larysa Masenko, Salvatore Del Gaudio) and in the key works on Ukrainian postmodern literature and Ukrainian society (Tamara Hundorova, Roksana Charchuk, Ola Hnatiuk). In the third part, Peter Mareš's concept of intratext multilingualism is taken over for further investigation of literary surzhyk. The subject of my thesis is the impact of the Ukrainian crisis on German Russian relations and the German economy. Experts say that the deterioration of trade relations between the European Union and Russia caused by the Ukrainian crisis will also affect the economies of individual European countries. The deterioration in trade relations were caused by sanctions imposed in response to the crisis in Ukraine. The degree of impact of the Ukrainian crisis on a given country is directly proportional to the countrys interconnection with the Russia. Before the Ukrainian crisis began, Germany was Russias most active trading partner from the European Union. Germany also plays a significant role in the Ukrainian crisis, as a negotiator between the European Union and Russia. The influence of the Ukrainian crisis on the German economy is defined by the development of Germanys economic relations with Russia an important trading partner to Germany. Two economic indicators were used to assess the relationship: German-Russian commodity trading and German foreign direct investment in the Russian market. The development of trade between Germany and Russia was also analyzed within the individual economic sectors targeted by the sanctions. The impact of the Ukrainian crisis on the German economy was further assessed by the development of Germanys trade relati-ons with Ukraine and Belarus. The results of the analysis of economic indicators, which are in line with the information provided in expert sources, confirmed the negative impact of the Ukrainian crisis on German-Russian relations and the German economy. The negative impacts of the Ukrainian crisis on the German economy manifest in the form of financial losses caused by the decline in German exports to Russia and the poor economic situation of German investors in the Russian market. Due to the sanctions, some long-term projects between Germany and Russia were canceled, German companies operating in the Russian market experienced declining revenues, and these companies were forced to lay off workers.

Assessment of the effects of sanctions on trade between the EU and Russia / Analýza dopadu sankcí na obchod mezi Evropskou unií a Ruskem

This thesis is trying to assess the effects of sanctions imposed on Russia in 2014 by the European Union and other countries, with respect to the changes in the trade flows among the two participants (EU and Russia). Firstly, the theoretical background for sanctions is provided, explaining their meaning and instruments which they use. Secondly, the overview of the Ukrainian conflict is conducted together with a brief review of the economic restrictions which were implemented, as well as the Russian counter-sanctions. The empirical part is firstly explaining the effects of the restrictions on the both economies and then introducing the state of the bilateral trade flows between the EU and Russia before the imposition of the sanctions. The most important part of the thesis is the gravity model conducted in the third chapter, which is trying to estimate the effects of the sanctions on the EU-Russian trade flows using two approaches. One of them is conducted with the help of regression analysis and a dummy variable which controls for the sanctions effect. The other one is predicting the values of exports without the disturbance of the sanctions and then comparing the results with the real values of the export for the years examined. The results of these analyses have proven the expectations about the negative impact of the sanctions on the trade flows between the EU and Russia.

This thesis addresses identity issues of the Ukrainian elites using two parallel Ukrainian narratives. In search for conflict lines, we look at 20th ct. milestones which played a major part in the formation of the Ukrainian elites. An emphasis is placed on the modernization of Ukrainian society in 1920s and 1930s. We also analyze the impact of these two Ukrainian narratives on the formation of the Soviet nation using strong historical ties between the Ukrainian and the Russian nation. These ties still have an impact on the formation of Ukrainian identities; however, the conclusion of this thesis suggests that it will be possible to assess the definite shape of the Ukrainian identity only after a new supranational identity - similar to the Soviet one - has been shaped.
