Agricultural waste and wood waste for pyrolysis and biochar : An assessment for Rwanda / Jordbruks- och träavfall för produktion av biokol : En utvärdering för RwandaEliasson, Jenny, Carlsson, Viktor January 2020 (has links)
A high priority in order to combat climate change is disposal of waste. In low-income countries, a large portion of biomass residues generated in the forestry, agricultural and industrial sectors could be usable, instead of being seen as waste. For instance, it could be converted into biochar, which is proven to have many environmental benefits. In Rwanda, the agricultural sector employs 80% of the population and accounts for 35% of GDP. This sector, together with later refinement of crops and forestry production, cause large amounts of residue that many times is considered as waste. In this report, a literature study was conducted to evaluate possible biochar production from agricultural and wood wastes in Rwanda. Characteristics that determine if a biomass could be suitable for a biochar production were identified as C, H, O, N, S, hemicellulose, cellulose, lignin, ash and moisture content, residue-to-product ratio, and low heating value. These characteristics were assessed for the chosen Rwandan agricultural and wood wastes, by compiling values from published reports. The result shows that there are large volumes of residues that have potential for biochar production instead of being seen as waste in Rwanda. Biochar production from these wastes could enable environmental benefits for Rwanda, although further investigation of each single biomass could be needed in order to see if it is practically, technically and financially possible to do in reality.

Effect of Minimum Suppression and Maximum Release Years on Compression Parallel to Grain Strength and Specific Gravity for Small-sized Yellow-poplar (Liriodendron tulipifera L.) SpecimensMettanurak, Thammarat 23 September 2008 (has links)
Several researchers have concluded that there is little or no relationship between specific gravity and ring width or growth rate in yellow-poplar (Liriodendron tulipifera L.). Because most mechanical properties of wood are also closely related to specific gravity, it would thus be of interest to learn how minimum suppression and maximum release years' evidence that can be extracted from radial growth patterns based on a modified radial growth averaging (RGA) technique's influence the compression parallel to grain strength and specific gravity of wood.
This study is designed to evaluate the effects of growth suppression and release on ultimate crushing stress and specific gravity for small-sized yellow-poplar specimens. Additionally, the relationship between specific gravity and ultimate crushing stress is investigated.
Twenty-three yellow-poplar cores were examined for their growth ring widths. Minimum suppression and maximum release years were identified based on the modified RGA criteria method. From each increment core, three 1 Ã 1 Ã 4 mm specimens from both minimum suppression and maximum release years were tested for their ultimate crushing stresses using a micro-mechanical test system. The specific gravity of each specimen was also recorded. These data were analyzed using a paired samples t test and a simple linear regression.
The results indicate that the mean ultimate crushing stress and specific gravity of maximum release years were significantly higher than that of minimum suppression years. Furthermore, the ultimate crushing stress was linearly related to the specific gravity of the specimens. / Master of Science

// Abstract : This thesis focuses on the ultimate behavior of steel structures, controlled seismically by elastomeric dampers and chevron bracings. Earthquakes can cause considerable damages when infrastructures and buildings are not built considering appropriate standards and technics. Therefore, mitigating the impact of earthquakes means essentially building safe structures by taking account of economic parameters too. Thus Gauron, Girard, Paultre and Proulx studied in 2009 a seismic force resisting system consisting only of chevron braces connected in series with fiber-reinforced natural rubber dampers that offers many benefits. First, the system remains elastic under the design earthquake by reducing linear seismic efforts by a factor of R[subscript d] = 3 compared to a conventional frame. Secondly, it allows to control the displacements under the limits of NBCC 2010 (National Building Code of Canada 2010), and even to reduce them in some cases. Therefore, it allows a reduction of sections of beams and columns of conventional frames and it prevents repairing costs of the structure after an earthquake. However, the ultimate limit state behavior of this system, its limitations and safety reserves have not been determined yet. Thus, the overall objective of this project is to determine the different possible failure mechanisms of the system, to set its limits and safety reserves, and to state after some recommendations, how it can be used in the design of new structures. To achieve these objectives, two quasi static tests were performed on two steel frames designed with the new system. Dynamic tests were also conducted to get the viscoelastic properties of the damping material. The first quasi static test revealed an unexpected and premature failure mechanism that pointed out a major flaw in the connections of the braces with the damper. The second test revealed one of the failure mechanisms originally expected where the rubber tears after buckling of the compression brace. The experimental results have shown that the damper is the weak element in the system, and that additional forces can significantly reduce the structural capacity of structures designed with the system. In both cases, the results have shown that the actual design method of the system should be improved. Thus, recommendations for the design of elements of structures designed with this system have been developed, particularly with regard to the rubber and brace connections.

Fire performance of cold-formed steel sectionsCheng, Shanshan January 2015 (has links)
Thin-walled cold-formed steel (CFS) has exhibited inherent structural and architectural advantages over other constructional materials, for example, high strength-to-weight ratio, ease of fabrication, economy in transportation and the flexibility of sectional profiles, which make CFS ideal for modern residential and industrial buildings. They have been increasingly used as purlins as the intermediate members in a roof system, or load-bearing components in low- and mid-rise buildings. However, using CFS members in building structures has been facing challenges due to the lack of knowledge to the fire performance of CFS at elevated temperatures and the lack of fire design guidelines. Among all available design specifications of CFS, EN1993-1-2 is the only one which provided design guidelines for CFS at elevated temperatures, which, however, is based on the same theory and material properties of hot-rolled steel. Since the material properties of CFS are found to be considerably different from those of hot-rolled steel, the applicability of hot-rolled steel design guidelines into CFS needs to be verified. Besides, the effect of non-uniform temperature distribution on the failure of CFS members is not properly addressed in literature and has not been specified in the existing design guidelines. Therefore, a better understanding of fire performance of CFS members is of great significance to further explore the potential application of CFS. Since CFS members are always with thin thickness (normally from 0.9 to 8 mm), open cross-section, and great flexural rigidity about one axis at the expense of low flexural rigidity about a perpendicular axis, the members are usually susceptible to various buckling modes which often govern the ultimate failure of CFS members. When CFS members are exposed to a fire, not only the reduced mechanical properties will influence the buckling capacity of CFS members, but also the thermal strains which can lead additional stresses in loaded members. The buckling behaviour of the member can be analysed based on uniformly reduced material properties when the member is unprotected or uniformly protected surrounded by a fire that the temperature distribution within the member is uniform. However if the temperature distribution in a member is not uniform, which usually happens in walls and/or roof panels when CFS members are protected by plaster boards and exposed to fire on one side, the analysis of the member becomes very complicated since the mechanical properties such as Young’s modulus and yield strength and thermal strains vary within the member. This project has the aim of providing better understanding of the buckling performance of CFS channel members under non-uniform temperatures. The primary objective is to investigate the fire performance of plasterboard protected CFS members exposed to fire on one side, in the aspects of pre-buckling stress distribution, elastic buckling behaviour and nonlinear failure models. Heat transfer analyses of one-side protected CFS members have been conducted firstly to investigate the temperature distributions within the cross-section, which have been applied to the analytical study for the prediction of flexural buckling loads of CFS columns at elevated temperatures. A simplified numerical method based on the second order elastic – plastic analysis has also been proposed for the calculation of the flexural buckling load of CFS columns under non-uniform temperature distributions. The effects of temperature distributions and stress-strain relationships on the flexure buckling of CFS columns are discussed. Afterwards a modified finite strip method combined with the classical Fourier series solutions have been presented to investigate the elastic buckling behaviour of CFS members at elevated temperatures, in which the effects of temperatures on both strain and mechanical properties have been considered. The variations of the elastic buckling loads/moments, buckling modes and slenderness of CFS columns/beams with increasing temperatures have been examined. The finite element method is also used to carry out the failure analysis of one-side protected beams at elevated temperatures. The effects of geometric imperfection, stress-strain relationships and temperature distributions on the ultimate moment capacities of CFS beams under uniform and non-uniform temperature distributions are examined. At the end the direct strength method based design methods have been discussed and corresponding recommendations for the designing of CFS beams at elevated temperatures are presented. This thesis has contributed to improve the knowledge of the buckling and failure behaviour of CFS members at elevated temperatures, and the essential data provided in the numerical studies has laid the foundation for further design-oriented studies.

Méthodologie de contrôle en place des micropieux à partir d'essais dynamiques / In situ control methodology for micropiles based on dynamic load testingCalvente, René Matias 30 June 2014 (has links)
The review of the state-of-the-art of micropiles produced as part of this work allows to identify a wide variety of construction methodologies which have a stress-strain behavior difficult to predict. As for the testing methods, there are methods for assessing the condition of piles or shafts but they are not always applicable to the micropiles; and in terms of the control of mechanical behavior, the most used load testing micropile is the uplift static load test. The static load test is easy to perform and interpret, however the reaction system is cumbersome and slow to erect, therefore this test is time and cost consuming. Another type of test that can be used in the control of deep foundations is the dynamic load testing. The literature review helped to identify the advantages and disadvantages of this type of test that has been adapted and validated in control of pile behavior. The new methodology proposed in this work is based on low-strain dynamic test requiring a smaller impact energy than a high-strain dynamic test. The testing protocol and loading device of the methodology have been calibrated and validated by numerical simulations in order to justify the choice of the impact energy, the weight of hammer and the cushion that will be used. The numerical observations are then verified by experiences in full-scale micropiles installed in an experimental site developed as part of this project. The developed in situ control methodology of the resistance in service of micropiles is an original method, easy to carry out, simple to execute and with an immediate interpretation. This methodology has been validated on full-scale micropiles in contained conditions and also in uncontained conditions in three real projects of micropiles. Finally, the advances in the investigations have led to develop a methodology for control the micropile’s ultimate resistance. We propose to use an analytical model for predicting the stress-strain behavior, which must be supplied with the results of the low-strain dynamic micropile test and of a complementary geotechnical test in order to examine the parameter of soil failure. The goal of this development is to provide a method for predict the micropile’s ultimate resistance without compromising its integrity. The results of the application of the new method to the experimental micropiles are in close agreement with the results observed in the static load test.

[en] THE ESCHATOLOGICAL NATURE OF THE CHURCH: THE ALREADY AND NOT YET THE FULLNESS OF OUR SALVATION, A REFLECTION FROM THE SEVENTH CHAPTER OF LUMEN GENTIUM / [pt] A ÍNDOLE ESCATOLÓGICA DA IGREJA: UM ESTUDO DO JÁ E DO AINDA NÃO À LUZ DO SÉTIMO CAPÍTULO DA LUMEN GENTIUMFANTICO NONATO SILVA BORGES 14 March 2019 (has links)
[en] The eschatological nature of the Church as theological reflection, it is very relevant, since it is the relationship between the visible structure of the Church and that dream reality as the ultimate goal of ecclesial activity. The eschatological nature of Vatican II brought up this discussion when he emphasized that the eschatological tension between the already and not yet is in the nature of the new people of God, and that, therefore, the Church is sign and instrument of fullness of Hope in the midst of humanity. As a sign, it becomes the world visible sacrament of the unity of mankind with God and with herself. Our research focuses on the position of Vatican II about the situation, the Church s mission, as for the Fathers, the salvation promised by the Lord already begun in Christ, but not yet consummated, because the time of the restoration of all things give will be only when all; the man and with him the whole creation reach its final restoration in Christ. In the meantime the church is compelled to carry on the work of sanctification of humanity as mission charged by Christ in the unity of the Holy Spirit. This work therefore want to show how the salvation of Christ continues through the action of the Church, instructing their children about the
meaning of temporal life, as hope of eternal life and commitment to the Kingdom of God.

Previous issue date: 2016-02-23 / Objectives: This study evaluated the effect of addition of copper nanoparticles at different concentrations into a simplified etch-and-rinse (ER) adhesive system (Ambar [AM]) on antimicrobial activity (AMA), degree of conversion of adhesives discs (DC-d) and dentin-resin interface (DC-i), the ultimate tensile strength (UTS), 28-day cumulative water sorption (WS), solubility (So) and copper release (CR) as well as immediate (IM) and 1-year (1Y) resin–dentine bond strength (μTBS) and nanoleakage (NL). Methods: Seven experimental adhesive systems were formulated according to the addition of copper nanoparticles (0 [control], 0.0075, 0.015, 0.06, 0.1, 0.5 and 1%) in AM adhesive system. We tested the antimicrobial activity of synthesized adhesives against Streptococcus mutans using agar diffusion assays. For DC-d, specimens were constructed and tested after 24 h for FTIR and micro-Raman spectroscopy. For UTS, specimens were tested after 24 h and 28 days. For WS and So, after specimens build-up, they were stored in water and the properties measured for 28 days. For CR, specimens were stored in 2% nitric acid solution and the properties were measured for 28 days. The occlusal enamel of thirty-five molars was removed and adhesives were applied to dentine surface after 37% phosphoric acid etching. After composite resin build-ups, specimens were longitudinally sectioned to obtain resin–dentine bonded sticks (0.8 mm2). Specimens were tested in tension at 0.5 mm/min in IM or 1Y (μTBS). For NL, 2 bonded sticks from each tooth were prepared and analyzed under SEM in IM or 1Y. For DC-i, 2 bonded sticks were prepared and analyzed under micro-Raman spectroscopy. The μTBS and NL data of each adhesive were subjected to two-way repeated measures ANOVA. For UTS, WS, So, copper release, DC-d and DC-i data of each adhesive were subjected to a one-way ANOVA. Tukey’s post hoc test was used for pair-wise comparisons (α = 0.05). Results: The addition of copper nanoparticles provided antimicrobial properties to the adhesives at all concentrations (p < 0,05), and did not influence UTS, WS and SO (p > 0.05). Higher CR was observed in adhesives with higher concentration of copper nanoparticles (p < 0.05). The addition of 1% of copper nanoparticles decreased the DC-d and DC-i significantly. After 1Y, significant reductions of μTBS and increases of NL were observed in the control group (p < 0.05). Reductions of μTBS and increase of NL over time were not observed for copper-containing adhesives. Conclusions: The addition of copper nanoparticles in concentrations up to 0.5% in the simplified ER Ambar adhesive system may be an alternative to provide antimicrobial properties, increase the long-term stability of resin–dentine interfaces, 12 without reducing adhesives’ mechanical properties evaluated.
