In the business world, fashion can be seen as a strategy used by institutions, specially related to the construction and valorization of their image in society. Often part of this strategy includes the creation and development of clothing to be used by the employees. This clothing, also known by uniform, identifies the individuals as part of a particular organization. In this context, this dissertation aimed to study the creation of the first female corporation of the Military Brigade of Rio Grande do Sul State’s uniform, analyzed by the perspective of the product-service system, an essential concept of Strategic Design. Product-service system can be considered as strategic, that analyzes the interaction established between the product and the other spheres that guide the design project. Thus, the goal of this paper was to identify how the uniforms of the Female Military Brigade relate to the organization as a means of strengthening their identity within this product-service system. For the development of this research, a case study was fulfilled, through in-depth interviews with two groups, that includes the former Governor of RS (1983-1987) and the stylist Rui Spohr on the first group, and the Colonel and a Major of the studied corporation on the second one. An analysis of interviews was held in conjunction with the Museum of Communication, the main newspapers of the State (Zero Hora and Correio do Povo) and also the designer himself and the designer himself. The main results show that the uniform can be analyzed from three different categories – visual elements, communication and behavior –, and indeed can be considered as empowering elements of the identity of the corporation.

Automatic Markov Chain Monte Carlo Procedures for Sampling from Multivariate Distributions

Karawatzki, Roman, Leydold, Josef, Pötzelberger, Klaus January 2005 (has links) (PDF)
Generating samples from multivariate distributions efficiently is an important task in Monte Carlo integration and many other stochastic simulation problems. Markov chain Monte Carlo has been shown to be very efficient compared to "conventional methods", especially when many dimensions are involved. In this article we propose a Hit-and-Run sampler in combination with the Ratio-of-Uniforms method. We show that it is well suited for an algorithm to generate points from quite arbitrary distributions, which include all log-concave distributions. The algorithm works automatically in the sense that only the mode (or an approximation of it) and an oracle is required, i.e., a subroutine that returns the value of the density function at any point x. We show that the number of evaluations of the density increases slowly with dimension. An implementation of these algorithms in C is available from the <a href="http://statmath.wu-wien.ac.at/software/hitro/">authors</a>. Universal Algorithms as an Alternative for Generating Non-Uniform Continuous Random Variates

Leydold, Josef, Hörmann, Wolfgang January 2000 (has links) (PDF)
This paper presents an overview of the most powerful universal methods. These are based on acceptance/rejection techniques where hat and squeezes are constructed automatically. Although originally motivated to sample from non-standard distributions these methods have advantages that make them attractive even for sampling from standard distributions and thus are an alternative to special generators tailored for particular distributions. Most important are: the marginal generation time is fast and does not depend on the distribution. They can be used for variance reduction techniques, and they produce random numbers of predictable quality. These algorithms are implemented in a library, called UNURAN, which is available by anonymous ftp. (author's abstract) / Series: Preprint Series / Department of Applied Statistics and Data Processing

Além disso, a legislação educacional vigente no período estudado complementa a análise. / As the practical one of use of the pertaining to school uniforms if configured in the public schools of the state of São Paulo enters the years of 1950 the 1970? Development of an Instrumented Dynamic Mannequin Test to Rate the Protection Provided by Protective Clothing

Sipe, Joel Edwards 03 May 2004 (has links)
A dynamic mannequin testing facility has been constructed to test the thermal protective properties of Navy uniforms and protective clothing. The existing facility consists of a traversing mannequin mechanism that passes through a fire that has been spatially characterized by temperature and heat flux measurements. The fire is provided by 8 propane sand burners in a modified ISO 9705 room. The current project is a continuation of work done by WPI Students over the last 5 years. A copper disk surface heat flux transducer has been designed and calibrated in the WPI Cone Calorimeter. The mannequin has been instrumented with 40 of these transducers for the acquisition of heat flux data during fire exposures. Heat Flux data was collected with the bare mannequin and through protective clothing for a range of exposure times. A finite difference method approach is used to model the skins temperature response at the epidermis-dermis interface. This temperature is used to predict 1st and 2nd degree skin burns using Henrique's burn damage integral. The percent total body area (%TBA) affected by burns can be calculated by this method. The facility is now capable of providing comparative data on the relative thermal protection provided by different clothing.

A Simple Universal Generator for Continuous and Discrete Univariate T-concave Distributions

Leydold, Josef January 2000 (has links) (PDF)
We use inequalities to design short universal algorithms that can be used to generate random variates from large classes of univariate continuous or discrete distributions (including all log-concave distributions). The expected time is uniformly bounded over all these distributions. The algorithms can be implemented in a few lines of high level language code. In opposition to other black-box algorithms hardly any setup step is required and thus it is superior in the changing parameter case. Automatic Sampling with the Ratio-of-uniforms Method

Leydold, Josef January 1999 (has links) (PDF)
Applying the ratio-of-uniforms method for generating random variates results in very efficient, fast and easy to implement algorithms. However parameters for every particular type of density must be precalculated analytically. In this paper we show, that the ratio-of-uniforms method is also useful for the design of a black-box algorithm suitable for a large class of distributions, including all with log-concave densities. Using polygonal envelopes and squeezes results in an algorithm that is extremely fast. In opposition to any other ratio-of-uniforms algorithm the expected number of uniform random numbers is less than two. Furthermore we show that this method is in some sense equivalent to transformed density rejection.
