To kill a child : Violence against children in Greek mythological vase paintings from the Archaic and Classical period.

Olausson, Cajsa January 2018 (has links)
The depiction of violence has always been and will always be a fascinating but horrifying subject. Violence shown on ancient vase paintings has been the subject of multiple authors’ works. This study analyzes the depiction of violence against children in mythological scenes on vases from the ancient world by analyzing and comparing 39 scenes where the subject is rendered and explores the question of what happens if the interpretation of the vase painting lays the focus on the child. This is done by examining how the children die, the iconography of their deaths and the traces of violence left on their bodies, their relationship to the perpetrators, the importance of the perpetrator and the spectators in the scenes, how the iconography relates to the myth as known from literary sources, as well as the chronological and geographical evolution of the motifs. The essay focuses on five mythological children, Troilos, Astyanax, the children of Medea and Opheltes, who all are the object of violence and early death in their respective myths and on vase paintings. The comparison between the vase paintings is divided into the scenes that depicts the children about to be killed and scenes showing the children as already dead. An account of the relationship between the children and the perpetrator as well as the perpetrators motive for killing the child and how their appearance in the scenes compare to each other is presented. The results of the comparisons are used in a discussion also including the ancient attitudes towards children and violence and if the children's deaths could be interpreted as human sacrifice. The study concludes that the interpretation of the role of the children in representations of violence is complex and that there are many aspects that affect the understanding of the vase paintings as a whole. Changing the focus to the child will not change the overall interpretation of the mythological motif, however, the innocence of the child will add more horror and gruesomeness to the overall impression of the vase painting. /

New technologies of agricultural production have helped overcome difficulties and improve the production of many crops. The culture grown in substratum represents a great advancement in the production system, making it possible to manage soil contamination problems, mainly in protected environment with intense and constant cultivation. The experiment was carried out at the Experimental Station of FEIS/UNESP, Ilha Solteira Campus - SP, to 20° 21' S and 51° 22' W and 326 m altitude, in protected environment (greenhouse), conducted in plastic vases with capacity for 12 liters, with coconut fiber substratum. The hybrids Débora Max and Raísa N and 5 (five) dilutions of the composition of the recommended nutritional solution for the culture, in NFT system, were used. The dilutions were made in 1000, 1500, 2000, 2500 and 3000 liters of water. Electric conductivity (CE) and pH of the nutritional and drained solutions, blossom-end rot, total and commercial yield, mass of fruits, and the technological variables (acidity, soluble solids, pH, and maturation index) were evaluated. It was concluded that, in the conditions of the experiment, the proposed dilution of the nutritional solution favored the development and yield of the tomato crop. The dilution in 2500 liters promoted the highest yield, greater mass of fruits and better quality of fruits. The electric conductivity for the drained solution in the dilution in 1000 liters surpassed the culture tolerance limit for of the tomato crop in the two crops grown, evidencing the high incidence of blossom-end rot as a consequence and, therefore, lower yields for both crops.

The inflorescences were selected by size and distributed at random design. It was evaluated the relative water content, fresh mass variation and longevity. The rate of vase solution uptake and transpiration by the stems were higher in the first 24 hours, being the Flower® which promoted 74.3% higher effect than distilled water and 87.8% bigger than the solution containing 8-HQC, sucrose and citric acid. After 24 hours, the rates were reduced and had little variation until the end of the vase life of the inflorescences. In dry stored flowers it was observed that the vascular blockage was linearly proportional to the stress, occurring in less than 2 cm from the base of the stem. The vase solution containing 8-HQC, sucrose and citric acid promoted higher vase life to the inflorescences (7 days), followed by Flower® (5 days); the use of hot or cold water for hydration did not prolong the vase life or kept the flower quality. The cold dry storage was efficient in prolonging the flower longevity, increasing the period for commercialization, in particular if associated to the use of vase solution containing 8- HQC, sucrose or citric acid after the storage, except of stored up to 6 days, where the behavior was similar to the Flower® solution. The cold storage and the vase solutions were efficient in prolonging the inflorescence vase life of snapdragon.

New technologies of agricultural production seek better conditions of hygiene, reduction in the incidence of soil diseases and alternative for the lack of space, overcoming obstacles and increasing the production of many cultures, offering benefits that the producer is the use of containers for growing of vegetables in greenhouses. This study aimed to evaluate different containers and calcium concentrations in the nutrient solution in the tomato crop of coconut fiber in a greenhouse. The experiment was conducted from April to September 2008 at the experimental farm of Education, Research and Extension, Faculty of Engineering - UNESP, Ilha Single - SP. The treatments consisted of four containers (rail, small vessel, large vessel and pillow) and concentrations of calcium (0.052 g / L, 0.065 g / L, 0.078 g / L, 0.091 g / L and 0.104 g / L). We carried out the following assessments: chemical analysis of leaf tissue, number of black spot, total and marketable yield, average fruit weight and fruit classification business. We conclude that under the conditions of the working chute container provided higher average fruit yield compared to the large container vessel. The early harvest may be related to the higher temperature occurred in the greenhouse, where plants were grown hybrid Deborah Max containers were not limiting factors for production. Calcium and potassium showed synergism, there was competitive inhibition of calcium on the absorption of potassium. In relation to fertilization with concentrations of calcium, concentrators 0.052 and 0.065 g / L were responsible for greater total output and trade, greater numbers of small fruit and old and greater number of commercial fruits, and provide better control of the incidence of black spot.

Amélioration des performances énergétiques des systèmes de refroidissement industriels : Application aux serveurs informatiques / Industrial cooling systems performance enhancement : Application to IT Servers

Mammeri, Amrid 27 May 2014 (has links)
Mots clés : modélisation, transfert de chaleur, refroidissement, datacenter, liquid-cooling, caloducs, échangeurs, nanofluides, ébullition en vase, simulation numérique / The present work is about industrial thermal control systems issues, a focus is done on IT servers cooling. The first part of this document is about cooling techniques optimization. The second part concerns investigations for new cooling techniques potentially more efficient and which can address today's challenges of industrial thermal control systems. In the first chapter, we have done a literature survey and a theoretical analysis of physical phenomena behind studied cooling techniques. Then, we have sorted those techniques according to some criteria. This chapter is a basis for optimization studies we have achieved in the second chapter and for our new cooling techniques investigations in the two last chapters. In the second chapter, we have presented a study about heat transfer enhancement in a cold plate developed for IT servers liquid-cooling. We have observed great heat transfer enhancement when adding lozenge shaped fins inside the cold plate channels. No gain was noted when using some nanofluids as heat transfer liquids. We have shown, in the third chapter, a conception algorithm of a heat spreading device destined for IT servers cooling. The heat spreader is based on a heatpipe technology. First of all, we have presented the thermohydraulic model for cylindrical heatpipes design. A parametric study (geometric, working fluids ...) showed the best combination to obtain the highest heatpipe performance. Then, the heat spreader has been tested and we have validated partially the heatpipe model. The last chapter of this work is a study of a demonstrator destined for cooling down electronic components by immersion in a dielectric fluid with a low saturation temperature. We first built a numerical model to design the demonstrator and then it has been tested. The first results are very encouraging, when using SES-36 as a working fluid. Keywords : modeling, heat transfer, cooling, datacenter, liquid-cooling, heat pipes, heat exchangers, nanofluids, pool boiling, numerical simulation
