Time and Place: A new chronology for the origin of the broch based on the scientific dating programme at the Old Scatness Broch, Shetland.

Dockrill, Stephen, Batt, Catherine M., Outram, Zoe January 2006 (has links)
No / Iron Age studies in northern Britain have been dominated by one monument form, the broch. This focus on these monumental towers of the Atlantic Scotland, perhaps at the expense of other archaeological evidence, has brought about a strong division in the archaeological community. MacKie and Armit have both recently summarized the development of broch studies detailing the opposing arguments for the date of construction. In recent years archaeological evidence for these monuments has indicated an indigenous development rather than being associated with the movement of Iron Age peoples. This paper presents new chronological data for the construction of a Shetland broch and examines the archaeological repercussions for the 'early' chronology provided by these dates. Excavations at Old Scatness in the South Mainland of Shetland have revealed new evidence for a broch and defended Iron Age Village.

Green Growth in the Global South : Community Resilience and Systemic Leadership applied to the Green Village Model

Civalero, Gonzalo, Umutesi, Geraldine January 2024 (has links)
This thesis explores the application of Green Growth strategies in Rwanda, focusing on community resilience and systemic leadership within the Green Village Model. The research addresses the gap in understanding how these strategies are adopted in the challenging socio-economic contexts of the Global South, with a specific examination of Rwanda's pioneering Green Village. Using a qualitative case study approach, this study involved interviews with key stakeholders including government officials, community members from the Green Gicumbi village, and experts in the mentioned theoretical frameworks.  Findings indicate that Rwanda's adoption of Green Growth strategies is contextually driven, reflecting the unique socio-economic and environmental challenges faced by the communities. Systemic leadership has emerged as crucial in fostering an environment that enhances community resilience, thereby supporting the successful implementation of Green Growth. This interconnectedness significantly bolsters the community's capacity to adopt green technologies, manage resources sustainably, and enhance socio-economic well-being. The study contributes to the theory of sustainable development by providing insights into the dynamics of Green Growth strategies in the Global South. It underscores the importance of aligning such strategies with local needs and conditions to ensure their effectiveness and sustainability. The thesis also offers practical recommendations for policymakers and stakeholders involved in crafting andadopting Green Growth strategies, suggesting that fostering leadership that appreciates systems interdependencies and community-driven initiatives can significantly enhance the resilience and sustainability of vulnerable communities.

The Relationship between Village Firm Property Rights Reform and Grassroots Democracy

Unknown Date (has links)
Villagers' self-governing organizations, which are substitutes for the people's communes that were disintegrated, constitute the important means for governing rural areas in contemporary China. But in the operation of villagers self-governing organizations, the administration of village and town government and direct leadership mechanism of party branches at the grassroots’ level are still playing an important role, or even a leading role in some aspects, which causes unavoidable power conflicts. The paper discusses the interaction between the changes in the property rights of village enterprises in the late 1990’s and the development of grassroots democracy-villager self government and elections.

Exploring the Democratic Values and Discretion of Street-level Administrators in Village/Li

Hsieh, Chuang An Unknown Date (has links)
Street-level administrators in Village/Li are the main actors for policy implementation. Their discretionary behaviors will affect the rights of citizens and such behaviors are profoundly influenced by their belief in democracy. The purpose of this thesis is to explore the democratic values of Village/Li Chiefs and Secretaries in Taiwan, and to find out the influential factors of democratic values. Further, this thesis discusses the extent to which their democratic values affect the preference of discretionary behaviors. The data used in this article are from the research sponsored by the National Science Council of the Executive Yuan; which conducted 961 face-to-face interviews with Village/Li Chiefs and Village/Li Secretaries in Taiwan in early 2007. This study finds that the majority of street-level administrators and 80% of Village/Li Secretaries have moderate democratic values. Statistical analysis indicates that age and education have critical influence on democratic values. With regard to their preference of discretionary behaviors, most respondents make decision mainly based on the enactments, and the need of citizens is secondary concern. The crucial factor to explain the variation is the difference on duties between Village/Li Chiefs and Secretaries. Consequently, the preference of their discretionary behaviors is diverse. Because of such divergence and the crucial role of street-level administrators in service delivery and grass-root democracy, this study suggests that the government should provide training programs to enhance the democratic values of Village/Li chiefs in particular and street-level administrators in general.

People, house and village: the cultural construction of space among the Kam people in Gaobu

Kung, Hsiang Fang Unknown Date (has links)
The thesis mainly focuses on Kam in Gaobu village, which is located in Huaihua City, Hunan Province. Gaobu village is under the jurisdiction of Pingtan, Tongdao Dong Autonomous County and comprises three administrative villages: Gaosheng, Gaoshang, and Kezhong. Under the administrative villages, there are 6 natural villages: Yanzhai, Yangtian, Shangzhaitun, Longxing, and Gaoping. Gaobu village is surrounded by mountains. There is a river flowing through the area, which lives about 561 households and 2,410 people. Visitors are not often to see because of the inconvenient traffic. Kam villages are influenced by surrounding natural environment and reach a subtle balance. The spaces of Kam houses are highly related to their daily life. Interactions between villagers happen in public spaces, such as Gǔlóu (鼓樓) and Fēngyǔ Bridge (風雨橋); the production and life of people are composed of the fields, paths, ponds and rivers in the villages. Every space in Kam villages reflects the interaction between people and the environment. The purpose of this study is to discuss the relation between cultural context and the construction of space in Kam villages. In recent years, the rural tourism in ethnic minority areas has been fast-expanding. Tourism has become the main solution of economic development for villages. Meanwhile, people have gradually lost their traditional culture without consciousness. Therefore, this study takes Gaobu village as an example and attempts to talk about the culture of the construction of space of Kam people in Gaobu; analyze the cultural connotation within; observe how people interact with the natural environment and develop the unique way of inhabitation from houses and the whole village. In addition, this study explores that how Kam people in Gaobu bring back cultural values after the accommodation of their culture system, and the harmonizing of traditional culture and new things, when facing the drastic modernization. In response to the impact of modernization, this study aims to propose corresponding concepts and measures to preserve traditional culture instead of losing it.

Sanctuaires Shintô et Sociétés Locales dans le Japon de l’Epoque d’Edo : l’exemple de la province d’Izumi / Shintô Shrines and Local Societies in the Edo Period's Japan : the exemple of the Izumi province / 江戸時代における神社と地域社会 : 和泉国の例

Bardy, Yannick 28 November 2013 (has links)
This dissertation examines several groups of villages in Izumi Province during the Edo period (1600 - 1868). It seeks to elucidate the non-institutional social organizations and unique characteristics of those villages. Each of the groups of villages examined in this study were closely linked with a particular Shintô shrine. This dissertation begins by analyzing the relationship between shrines and the groups of villages with which they were linked. It will then examine the functions performed by the parishioner organizations of each shrine, as well as the relationship between parishioner organizations, on the one hand, and the local authorities and shogunate, on the other. It will also investigate each shrine’s social structure and the role of Shintô priests and Buddhists monks. This dissertation will also highlight the range of shrine-related conflicts and disputes that occurred in Izumi Province during the Edo period. Furthermore, it will examine the role that religious organizations, such as the Yoshida and Shirakawa priestly orders, played in early modern society. Specifically, this dissertation focuses on five shrines in Izumi Province: Kasuga, Hijiri, Kaminomiya, Shimonomiya, and Ôiseki. Through an examination of those five shrines, this dissertation will study the interaction between four groups: local parishioners, Shintô shrines, Shintô priests, and Buddhist monks. Such an analysis will enable us to elucidate the unique characteristics of the villages surrounding each shrine, the various non-institutional organizations that developed in those villages, and the internal social structure of each shrine.

The dialectic of determinism of alienation and freedom in the characters of two novels that are part of the modern Greek prose, named "the study of mores" (ithografia) [ηθογραφία] : The Beggar [ Ο ζητιάνος] of Andreas Karkavitsas (1896), The Murderess [ Η Φόνισσα] of Alexander Papadiamandis (1903)

Masson, Françoise 13 October 2016 (has links)
At the end of the 19th century, Greek writers created an original genre, the rural novel : a simple plot is the basis for the description of the life and mores in small Greek villages. This movement was called "study of mores" (ithografie) [ηθογραφία]. The historical and economic upheavals at the turn of the century lead to a crisis of traditional values and lead the authors to expand their questioning. In The Beggar, Andreas Karkavitsas shows determinisms which act collective characters that are the peasants of the village and the authorities who came to judge them. The individual always represents a group: Tziritokostas represents the class of beggars, Valachas the aristocratic class toppled over, Croustallo the peasant women. These last two figures are partly aware of their alienation; but the weight of society is such that it crushes them. The freedom is possible just in death. Francoyannou, the heroine of The Murderess of Alexander Papadiamandis, is responsible for the hell in which she locks herself by multiplying little girls murders. Determinism and alienation are the false reasons that allow her to wallow in rumination of her soul cold and hard; she persists in evil because she refuses her freedom of God’s creature.

Mladá - mezi zánikem obce a vznikem vojenského cvičiště (1904-1906) / Mladá - between the Destruction of Village and the Emergence of the Military Training Ground (1904-1906)

Šálová, Andrea January 2013 (has links)
1. 4. ABSTRACT Diploma Thesis Mladá - Between the Destrution of Village and the Emergence of Military Training Ground (1904-1906) discusses the turbulent lives of the parish community on Benátky-Region, which, in 1904, was in the very center of planned artillery firing ranges and military training ground of the Austro-Hungarian army. As the only one of the affected villages, Mladá was doomed, people were forced to move, and the local buildings were used to house troops, and, subsequently, they were used as artillery targets. Sacrificing Mladá village in fact brought economic prosperity to the surrounding municipalities. The Transport infrastructure had improved, local trade got new impulses, agriculture production found a new outlet in the army etc. Finally, the dissolution of Mladá village led to the emergence of a new micro-regional center, when a small village of Milovice became a town that still commemorates this historical event village through the name of one of its urban parts - Mladá.

Essais sur les oubliés de la société dans les pays émergents / Essays on the left-behinds in emerging countries

Huang, Yang 30 August 2017 (has links)
This dissertation consists of three independent papers on the left-behind children in China and the left-behind elderly in Thailand and Vietnam. The first paper addresses how school fees in urban areas affect child migration in China. Our findings suggest that higher fees deter migrant workers from bringing their children to urban areas, and more vulnerable migrant workers are most affected by an increase in school fees. The second paper investigates the impacts of adult children’s internal migration and remittances on the labor supply responses of the rural left-behind parents in Vietnam. The results show that mothers tend to work more if they have migrant children, and they tend to work less when they receive remittances from their migrant children. Conversely, fathers tend to be less affected by child migration and their remittances. The third paper examines the impacts of the universal social pension introduced in Thailand in 2009 on the well-being and the labor supply responses of the recipients and their spouses. The empirical results show that the social pension scheme does not generate significant impacts on household poverty status or expenditures, but receiving social pensions has a significant negative impact on beneficiaries' own labor market participation. Further, both men and women are found to respond to their spouses' pensions by leaving their jobs and staying inactive.
