Adolescent career development, family adaptability and family cohesion

The purpose of this study was to explore the relationships between process aspects of adolescent career development and the dynamic, family dimensions of adaptability and cohesion. Drawing from Super’s career development model, Tiedeman and O’Hara’s vocational decision-making model, Haren’s career decision-making paradigm and Olson et al’s. Circumplex Model of Marriage and Family Systems, curvilinear relationships were predicted between career development process variables and family adaptability-family cohesion. Adolescents in the study sample were 262 volunteer, high school seniors enrolled in three high schools (a rural, an urban, and a suburban) located in Southwest Virginia. Three summary hypotheses were tested by applying multiple regression analysis procedures. In the regression models examined, the criterion career development variables included: career decision-making style, occupational commitment, career planning, career exploration, decision-making and world-of-work information. The predictor variables consisted of family adaptability, family cohesion and related subdimension variables. The Assessment of Career Decision-Making and The Career Development Inventory were used to measure the criterion variables while the predictor variables were measured by the Family Adaptability and Cohesion Evaluation Scales. Hypothesis testing produced the following essential outcomes: (1) Six significant regression coefficients, distributed through four regression models, indicated that higher family adaptability (change) tendencies were associated with higher intuitive decision-making style levels, lower decision-making knowledge attained, adn lower world-of-work information acquired; whereas higher family cohesion (closeness) was related to more favorable career planning attitudes and higher measured levels of decision-making and world-of-work knowledge; (2) For the total sample, only the decision-making and world-of-work knowledge scales of the CDI were found to be significantly related to both family adaptability and family cohesion collectively; (3) a basic tenet of the Circumplex Model was challenged as no regression models examined yielded significant curvilinear relationships between the criterion and predictor variables; (4) The major dimensions of the Circumplex Model, family adaptability and cohesion were found to be correlated measures, a finding which also contradicted the Circumplex Model; and (5) Supplementary results provided partial explanations for some of the essential findings as well as supporting previous findings reported in the literature. / Ed. Counselors' knowledge of and attitudes toward careers in agriculture

The purpose of this study was to determine the knowledge junior and senior public high school counselors in Georgia have of careers in agriculture and to examine the attitudes junior and senior public high school counselors in Georgia have toward careers in agriculture. The population for the study consisted of all junior and senior high school counselors in the State of Georgia during the 1975-1976 school term. The population was stratified by gender and geographical location of employment in Georgia, from which a random sample was selected. The instrument used in this research was a three-part Counselor Inventory which was designed specifically for this study. Part A of the inventory consisted of twelve socio-demographic items, Part B was a Knowledge Survey which consisted of twenty items designed to measure knowledge of careers in agriculture, and Part C was an Attitude Scale which consisted of twenty items designed to examine attitudes toward careers in agriculture. Independent variables of the study were gender, age, race, location of high school attended, geographical location of employment in the State of Georgia, experience of the counselor in vocational agriculture in high school, experience in youth organizations, type of institution conferring the bachelor's degree, type of institution conferring the master's degree, status of employment of the counselor, years of experience as a counselor, and years of experience in agricultural and agriculturally related occupations. Dependent variables for the study were counselor knowledge and counselor attitude. Non-parametric statistics were employed in analyzing the data. Significant relationship was found to exist between race and knowledge; and gender, years of experience as a counselor, and years of experience in agricultural and agriculturally related occupations when correlated with attitudes. A significant relationship was also found to exist between counselor knowledge and counselor attitude. There was a significant relationship between counselor knowledge and race. White counselors tended to be more knowledgeable of careers in agriculture than black counselors. However, black counselors tended to have more positive attitudes toward careers in agriculture than white counselors. Nevertheless, the level of relationship was not significant. A significant relationship existed between counselor attitudes and gender. Female counselors tended to have more positive attitudes toward careers in agriculture than male counselors. Although, male counselors tended to be more knowledgeable of careers in agriculture than female counselors. However, the extent of the relationship was not statistically significant. There was a significant relationship between counselor attitudes and years of experience in agricultural and agriculturally related occupations. Counselors with 11 or more years of experience in agricultural or agriculturally related occupations tended to have more positive attitudes toward careers in agriculture than those with 0-5 or 6-10 years of experience in agricultural occupations. Although, counselors with 0-10 years of experience in agricultural occupations tended to be more knowledgeable than those with 11 or more years of experience. The extent of the relationship was not significant. A significantly positive correlation of .13 existed between counselor knowledge and counselor attitude. The zero order Pearson product-moment correlation was used in analyzing the data. Counselors who had vocational agriculture experience in high school were not as knowledgeable of careers in agriculture as those counselors who did not have vocational agriculture experience in high school. This finding compares favorably with the findings of Laborde (1973). The attitudes of counselors who did not have vocational agriculture experience in high school tended to have more positive attitudes toward careers in agriculture than those counselors who had vocational agriculture experiences in high school. Family ties and growing up to be: late adolescent career development and intergenerational family relationships

The research context for this study is family influence upon adolescent career phenomena. The construct of family influence was focused through use of intergenerational family systems theory (IFS). The career construct was focused through use of Donald Super’s theoretical and research work in the area of career development. The purpose of this study was to explore the impact of IFS variables (fusion/individuation, intimacy, triangulation, intimidation, and personal authority) on college students’ career development process variables (planning, exploration, decision making, world of work information). Data were obtained from university undergraduates and one of their primary parent figures. The final sample on which the results were computed was composed of 139 parent/university student dyads. Demographic data indicated that the student portion of the sample was predominately female (81%) and Caucasian (89%). The student selected primary parents were predominately female (82%) birth parents (98%) whose households were within the top two levels of social position. Multiple regression analyses determined that several IFS variables significantly impacted students’ career development process variables. Higher levels of intimacy and lower levels of intimidation between students and their parents were associated with positive career development profiles. Lower levels of triangulation and intimidation between parents and their parents were associated with positive career development profiles. Lower levels of intimacy and personal authority between parents and their parents were associated with positive career development profiles. Higher levels of intimacy and individuation between parents and their partners were associated with positive career development profiles. The results of the study generally support the notion that family dynamics are related to late adolescent career development processes. Students may benefit from attention to the family system, particularly in terms of both voluntary closeness between students and parents, and issues of intimidation and triangulation between parents and their parents. / Ph. Factors influencing high school learners to choose nursing as a career

Submitted in fulfilment of the requirements for the Degree of Master of Technology: Nursing, Durban University of Technology, 2014. / Globally there is recognition of a health workforce crisis characterised by critical shortages, migration, and an uneven geographical distribution of health professionals. The Nursing Strategy for South Africa records that for many decades nursing has been a career of choice for South Africans from all sectors of society (Department of Health 2008: 11). That has changed as nursing has become less appealing to learners. This raises questions as to the knowledge, attitudes and perceptions of learners towards the nursing profession. Aim of the study : The aim of the study was to determine factors influencing high school learners towards nursing as a career. Methodology : A descriptive cross-sectional quantitative and qualitative design was used to guide the study. The study was conducted in two high schools that were purposely sampled; the population comprised of high school learners from the two schools. Questionnaires were used to collect data from Grades 10 and 11. Life Orientation subject teachers were interviewed during data collection. Quantitative data was analysed by using SPSS. Qualitative data was analysed by using thematic analysis. Results : The findings of this study revealed that learners had inadequate knowledge of nursing. Interviews with teachers showed that this inadequate knowledge by learners could be associated with a lack of active involvement of the Department of Health in promoting nursing as a career.

本研究針對台灣政府在2008年底開辦的「97-98年度國中畢業未升學未就業青少年職能培訓輔導試辦計畫」進行成效及過程評估,該計畫以全台灣23間培訓機構進行培訓輔導之15-19歲雙待青少年為對象。研究方法採取量化及質化研究均等的混合型設計,從相關文獻回顧中歸納出就業力不足、社會網絡的匱乏及惡性循環的社會排斥,是在個人、社區及結構層次上造成雙待青少年問題出現的主要成因,並從而發展出提升就業力、聯結社會網絡及積極促進參與,作為處理雙待青少年問題之對策,以及檢視該計畫成效的三個面向。 / 研究發現該計畫對於協助參與的青少年脫離雙待狀態整體而言具有顯著成效,而在促進其聯結社會網絡面向及積極促進參與面向則成效良好,但在提升就業力面向成效較為有限,主要原因可能培訓時間過短,未能有效發展雙待青少年就業力的相關效能。再者,在過程評估方面,研究發現分散式的體驗教育安排方式在積極促進參與及聯結社會網絡方面較有顯著的效果,混合式的工作體驗安排方式在積極促進參與面向上明顯優於分開式,而學員半數以上來自法院轉介的班級呈現較顯著的進步,小班制在聯結社會網絡及積極促進參與面向上都具有較佳的成效,本研究也匯報了該計畫設計和執行過程中其他的可改進之處。 / 基於本研究的發現,研究者進一步提出值得關注的是社會角色的「不正當性」,是雙待青少年被視為問題的首要原因;另外,除了社會網絡的欠缺,他們還會涉入一些「負面社會網絡」,而「欠缺穩定性」的習氣,也是造成雙待青少年無法持續參與就學、就業及培訓的重要原因。最後,本研究提出相應的政策和實務層面之建議,例如建立陪伴式「在職輔導」的長期職業培訓模式,建立「以培訓機構為中心的社區網絡」,以及結合社會安全政策,鼓勵企業提供就業及見習機會等,以有效協助雙待青少年。 / This study evaluates the outcome and process of Evaluation of “The Project of Vocational Skills Training and Guidance for Junior High School Graduates not in Education or Employment in Taiwan. It is a training program targeting at young people aged 15-19 years old, who are not in education, employment or training (NEET). The mixed method of qualitative and quantitative research design was adopted. Exploring from the personal, community and structural levels, the inadequate employability, poverty of social network, and negative effect of vicious cycle of social exclusion were derived from literature review. As a result, the three dimemsions inadequate employability, poverty of social network, and social exclusion were identified and used as strategies to deal with the problem of NEET, and to examine the effectiveness of the Project. / The Study found that the Project has achieved significant effect as a whole in helping young people to get out of the situation of NEET, and also effectively promoted their social network dimension and active participation dimension; but the effectiveness of enhancement of employability was limited. / The major reason is mainly due to the short training time which cannot effectively developed the relevant employability of young people. Moreover, in the process of evaluation, the study also found that the scattered experiential education approach has significant effect in promoting active participation, the mixed mode of work experiential practice approach is better than separate approach, classes with students more than half referring from the courts demonstrate significant progress, and small classes in linking social networks and promoting active participation dimension have shown better results. Besides, the Project also reported other areas of improvement in relation to its design and implementation. / On the basis of the findings, the researcher further pointed out the stereotyped “illegitimacyof youth’s social role being seen as a problem in the major cause of young people to become NEET. Beside, despite of poverty of social network, they were laso involved in some “negative social network and fostered the “instability habit that affects the young people unable to participate in education and employment continuously.
