Tailoring porosity in carbon materials for supercapacitor applications

Within the different available electrochemical energy storage systems, supercapacitors stand out due to their high power densities and ultra-long cycle life. Their key-components are the electrode materials where the charge accumulation takes place and therefore many different approaches for the synthesis of carbonaceous electrode structures with well-defined pore systems are available. This review focuses on different strategies for tailoring porous carbon materials from the micropore level, over mesopores to macropores and even external or inter-particular porosity. A wide range of materials such as activated carbons, templated carbons, carbide-derived carbons, carbon nanotubes, carbon aerogels, carbon onions, graphenes and carbon nanofibers are presented, always in relation to their pore structure and potential use in supercapacitor devices.

Slightly Quixotic: Comic Strategies, Sexual Role Stereotyping and the Functionalization of Femininity in David Lodge's Trilogy of Campus Novels under Special Consideration of 'Nice Work' (1988)

In view of the fact that David Lodge’s campus novels are renowned for their ability to make light of traditional gender stereotypes as well as for their purportedly liberal, pro-feminist, intertexual, dialogical and metatextual dimensions, this article seeks to explore more precisely the strategic and unavowedly political functions humour and the comic fulfil in Changing Places, Small World and Nice Work. What will be demonstrated is that Lodge’s light-hearted, tolerant and at times even progressive liberalism is little more than an effect produced by the textual surface structure. In the case of Nice Work, this discrepancy between the surface and the deep structure leads to the paradox that while voyeuristic structures and male bonding are overtly ridiculed, on a deep structural level they are effectively reaffirmed. Though Lodge’s novels are at the level of their surface structure sustained by a logic which uses the “comic mode” as a more or less subtle form to critique traditional gender stereotypes, literary conventions, the British university system and British industry, ultimately his ‘Rummidge trilogy’ reinforces an aesthetically, morally and politically conservative subtext.

Evaluation of Rare Earth Projects Using the Real Options Model

In recent years, technological innovations have resulted in manifold applications using rare earth elements (REEs), leading to a dramatic increase in demand for them. Because of their unique physicochemical properties, REEs are considered indispensable in modern industry. They are extensively used in new materials, energy conservation, environmental protection and IT devices as well as in military weapon systems. They have also significantly contributed to the miniaturisation of electronic components, such as, for example, cell phones and laptop computers. REEs are essential for green technologies such as wind turbines. They are widely applied in the automotive industry for catalysts, hybrid vehicle batteries, motors and generators, etc. (Hurst, 2010). Due to the similarity of the chemical characteristics of each individual REE, the production processes for REEs with high purity are very complex: the processing and separation can be technically challenging. Furthermore, the chemical extraction processes involved have generated severe environmental problems. Currently, the supply of REEs is concentrated in China. To reduce the dependence on China, many countries have started to search for alternative REE sources, which can be classified into “primary sources” and “secondary sources”. Many REE exploration projects outside China and REE recycling projects have been launched. However, the success of the development of these projects is impacted by various risks, such as political risks, technical risks, environmental risks and social risks. The main research aim of this thesis is to establish a model for the evaluation of REE projects and to provide a basis for investment decision making. In order to complete this task, an analysis of REE deposits and the supply chain for REEs is provided. As results, a data base of potential REEs project is compiled, while an overview of the supply chain for REEs and an analysis of risks across the supply chain are presented. In order to assess potential REE production projects, a new real options valuation (ROV) model using a multi-dimensional binomial lattice approach is developed. For the application of the new real options model, a range of risk parameters and the expected production output of REE products are estimated using the Monte Carlo simulation method. The application of the new real options model is presented for the evaluation of the Bayan Obo mine in China, the Kvanefjeld REE project in Greenland, and a REE recycling project from magnetic scrap.

Performance of farm trees in farming systems in Mubende district, Uganda

The research of this thesis will focus on the performance of farm forestry trees in Mubende district, Uganda. In order to this, the research will help to fill the existing knowledge gap on the performance of farm forestry trees of east Africa specially Uganda. The conducted tree species are Markhamia lutea, Ficus natalensis, Mangifera indica, Artocarpus heterophyllus, Anitaris toxicaria, Persea americana, Albizia coriaria and Spathodea campanulata. The selection of the trees was mainly driven through the availability of age information. The trees were measured in height, age, DBH, length of commercial stem, diameter at specific height and visual observations e.g. occurrence and stem quality. To compare the performance of the conducted tree species a regression analysis with eight different functions was carried out for each tree species. The results are reproducible Stand- Height-Curves, height curves, DBH curves and curves for the single tree volume. The decision on the best curve was made on their biological plausibility and their statistical calculations. Additionally, the farmers of the trees were interviewed about their tree species for e.g. purposes of the tree, value of the wood and their own impressions on the growth of the tree species. The recommendation for the best applicable function is the Petterson function for the Stand-Height- Curve and the function of Richards for the height-, DBH- and single tree volume curve. Still these functions shouldn’t be used without comparison to other functions, especially because the used functions were developed for tree stand conditions and not specially for agroforestry conditions were the tree growth is in general higher. Additionally, an upscaling and prediction of the monetary tree values is made on the basis of the single tree volume curves and the interview results. The prediction of the farmers possible income through the cultivation of trees is made for Markhamia lutea, Ficus natalensis, Anitaris toxicaria and Albizia coriaria and assumes that 100 trees are planted on one hectare. Albizia coriaria 3.630 € achieves the highest possible extra income for the farmer followed by Ficus natalensis with 1.300 €, Anitaris toxicaria with 910€ and Markhamia lutea with 880 €. This thesis gives an example on the performance and possible monetary value of tree species in Mubende district, Uganda. Further investigation is needed to fill the knowledge gap in the performance of east African tree species and their values completely. Let q be a nontrivial odd prime power, and let 𝑛 ≥ 2 be a natural number with (𝑛, 𝑞) ≠ (2, 3). We characterize the groups 𝑃𝑆𝐿𝑛(𝑞) and 𝑃𝑆𝑈𝑛(𝑞) by their 2-fusion systems. This contributes to a programme of Aschbacher aiming at a simplified proof of the classification of finite simple groups.
