Structural analysis of truck chassis frames under longitudinal loads considering bimoment effects

Thin walled beams warp under torsional and longitudinal loads. Warping restraint produces high longitudinal stresses. This is an analysis of the stress distribution in the side members of commercial vehicle chassis frames under the effects of the previously little studied longitudinal loads which may act on a truck chassis through spring hanger brackets. The structure analysed is a model chassis frame consisting of channel section side members and four cross members with different joint connections. The developed theories are incorporated into a special purpose finite element program which may be used in the preliminary stages of chassis frame design. Although the program is only used for the longitudinal load case in this thesis, it is generally applicable for other chassis load cases, including torsion, bending, etc. and combination of these. The theoretical results obtained from the program and the finite element analysis on complete chassis frame models are validated against experiments performed on a strain-gauged chassis frame model constructed with the same dimensions and constructional details as the finite element models with the appropriate loading and boundary conditions. Suggestions for the optimum design and attachment positions for components such as spring hanger bracket which may apply longitudinal loads to the side members of the chassis frame are discussed from the point of view of longitudinal loadings.

System And Algorithm Design For Varve Image Analysis System

This dissertation describes the design and implementation of a computer vision based varve image analysis system. The primary issues covered are software engineering design, varve image calibrations, varve image enhancement, varve Dynamic Spatial Warping (DSW) profile generation, varve core image registration, varve identification, boundary identification and varve thickness measurement. A varve DSW matching algorithm is described to generate DSW profile and register two core images. Wavelet Multiple Resolution Analysis (MRA) is also used to do the core image registrations. By allowing an analyst to concentrate on other research work while the VARVES software analyzes a sample, much of the tedious varve analysis work is reduced, and potentially increasing the productivity. Additionally, by using new computer vision techniques, VARVES system is able to do some varve analysis which was impossible handled manually.

Video sculpture:spatio-temporal warping

In this thesis the concept behind our notion of video sculpture is to imagine an image sequence or movie as a three dimensional volume. We then also imagine that there is a frameset that traverses the image sequence to give us what we commonly think of as a video or movie. In the ordinary sense this frameset moves through an image sequence in a completely timeparallel linear fashion. In video sculpture, we free the frameset from these bounds so that we can sample space and time in completely unorthodox ways. We can view the whenwhere in previously unforeseen perspectives. Slices of the video environment can simultaneously reveal both past and future actions within a single frame. Building on this free representation of video spacetime, we then wrest the frame once more from the present constraints of topography and/or topology. The frame can bend and twist and jump and dive. The view of a fading quadratic surface cutting through two scenes makes for a beautiful curtain transition. We present a framework and an implementation for modeling the frame as it passes through the image sequence volume object.

Measuring Glide Reflection Symmetry in Human Movements

abstract: Many studies on human walking pattern assume that adult gait is characterized by bilateral symmetrical behavior. It is well understood that maintaining symmetry in walking patterns increases energetic eciency. We present a framework to provide a quantitative assessment of human walking patterns, especially assessments related to symmetric and asymmetric gait patterns purely based on glide reflection. A Gliding symmetry score is calculated from the data obtained from Motion Capture(MoCap) system. Six primary joints (Shoulder, Elbow, Palm, Hip, Knee, Foot) are considered for this study. Two dierent abnormalities were chosen and studied carefully. All the two gaits were mimicked in controlled environment. The framework proposed clearly showed that it could distinguish the abnormal gaits from the ordinary walking patterns. This framework can be widely used by the doctors and physical therapists for kinematics analysis, bio-mechanics, motion capture research, sports medicine and physical therapy, including human gait analysis and injury rehabilitation. / Dissertation/Thesis / Masters Thesis Electrical Engineering 2017

A Study in the Frequency Warping of Time-Domain Methods

This thesis develops a study for the frequency warping introduced by time-domain methods. The work in this study focuses first on the time-domain methods used in the classical SPICE engine, that is the Backward Euler, the Trapezoidal Rule and the Gear's methods. Next, the thesis considers the newly developed high-order method based on the Obreshkov formula. This latter method was proved to have the A-stability and L-stability properties, and is therefore robust in circuit simulation. However, to the best of the author's knowledge, a mathematical study for the frequency warping introduced by this method has not been developed yet. The thesis therefore develops the mathematical derivation for the frequency warping of the Obreshkov-based method. The derivations produced reveal that those methods introduce much smaller warping errors than the traditional methods used by SPICE. In order to take advantage of the small warping error, the thesis develops a shooting method framework based on the Obreshkov-based method to compute the steady-state response of nonlinear circuits excited by periodical sources. The new method demonstrates that the steady-state response can be constructed with much smaller number of time points than what is typically required by the classical methods.
