Using Websites to Study Library Resources, Services, and OrganizationsSergiadis, Ashley D.R. 28 March 2020 (has links)
Libraries rely on websites to inform patrons of their resources, services, and organizations. Consequently, these websites are a rich source of research data to discover library trends, whether it is determining which databases are most commonly offered or which departments have the most employees. Content from library websites not only allow researchers to explore these types of questions, but they also indicate how libraries communicate information to patrons.
Come to this session to learn when and how to conduct a content analysis of library websites. It will begin with an overview of the types of research questions that can be explored using this method, including examples from research projects within the library and information science literature. Then, the presenter will delve into the process of conducting a content analysis of library websites, breaking down the general steps and providing helpful tips along the way. These steps will be demonstrated with an example of a study conducted by the presenter that used information from library websites to determine which academic library departments (collections/technology, research/instruction, etc.) manage institutional repositories. Lastly, the session will conclude with an activity that will walk attendees through thinking of a research question and how to design a content analysis for that question.

Over the Barriers - A Study on Climate Change Communication on WebsitesLedin, Sofia January 2021 (has links)
This study examines communication about global warming with an emphasis on encouraging a change in a viewers behavior, and how this can be practically visualised on websites. The study first gathers research from the fields of climate change communication, marketing and psychology, then a survey is sent out and an overview of websites about global warming is made. The findings from all this is then applied to a Hi-fi prototype of a website. The study aims to answer the question: How could visualized messages and information about global warming encourage change in a viewers behavior? User tests of the finished prototype gave mixed results. The results suggest that the site succeeded in creating a positive tone and emotional impact, but were not as successful at encouraging change and raising perceived self-efficacy. It may have been successful at encouraging hopefulness, and informing, but it is a bit unclear due to contradicting results from quantitative personal ratings and qualitative interview answers. / <p>Examensarbetet är utfört vid Institutionen för teknik och naturvetenskap (ITN) vid Tekniska fakulteten, Linköpings universitet</p>

Online Engagement in the Eye of the Young Beholder : A study on what youth appreciate on mobile-friendly websitesBlomqvist, Alexandra January 2018 (has links)
Today's youth use their mobile phones in the same way as earlier generations used their computers. Therefore, web designers need to make websites mobile-friendly when aiming for the younger generation’s attention. In collaboration with Ashoka and Raoul Wallenberg Academy, within a project named Changemakers’ Yard, this thesis investigates what factors in terms of content and design youth in the age of 16-23 appreciate on a mobile application or website. The outcome of the thesis aims to guide web designers on what to keep in mind when designing mobile applications or websites for today’s youth. A quantitative and qualitative research was done by performing interviews, an online survey and two customized lectures with the target group. Data and comments from the research were then analyzed and summarized to form a paper prototype which was developed into a digital prototype. Both prototypes were evaluated via user tests with the target group. Finally, ten guidelines were compiled on what youth appreciate when it comes to the content and design on mobile-friendly websites. The guidelines focused on communication and usability, as well as site owners taking responsibility for updates and minimize the amount of data used. The responsibility of keeping the website updated as well as minimizing the amount of data, were both new findings. In addition, arguing against prior research, there were indications of differences between the genders regarding preferred content.

The Future of the Tea Party: A Comparison of the Progressive (Bull Moose) Party and the Tea Party MovementBailey, Kendall Lyons 04 September 2012 (has links)
The Tea Party Movement (TPM) has emerged as an important player in United States politics by promoting fiscal conservatism, limited government, free market economics, and Constitutionalism. Candidates championing these TPM values have had some successful campaigns, particularly in the 2010 congressional primary and general elections. In doing so, TPM candidates focused their attacks on President Obama and his supporters in Congress, drawing attention to the increase in government spending and the growing budget deficit. The niche focus of the TPM combined with the strength of the U.S. two-party system and voters' partisan loyalties may limit the long-term effectiveness of the group. An analysis of campaign rhetoric from a sample of successful TPM House candidates highlights similarities in language used by the sampled TPM candidates in conveying TPM values. The discussion of similar economic and political climates of the Progressive (Bull Moose) Party and the Tea Party Movement eras provides for a historical comparison from which to predict the future of the TPM. In sum, this thesis suggests that the Tea Party Movement will likely expire with an improved economy and the conclusion of Barack Obama's presidency. / Master of Arts

Streaming-Based Progressive Enhancement of Websites for Slow and Error-Prone NetworksVogel, Lucas Jacob 29 June 2023 (has links)
This thesis aims to improve the loading times of web pages by streaming the content in a non-render-blocking way. At the beginning of this thesis, a large-scale analysis was performed, spanning all downloadable pages of the top 10.000 web pages according to the Tranco-list. This analysis aimed to gather data about the render-blocking properties of web page resources, including HTML, JavaScript, and CSS. It further gathered data about code coverage, giving insight into how much of the render-blocking code is actually used. Therefore, the structural optimization potential could be determined. Less render-blocking code will, in turn, lead to faster loading times due to requiring less data to display the page. The analysis showed that there is significant optimization potential left. On average, modern web pages are built with a combined 86.7% of JavaScript and CSS, the rest being HTML. Both JavaScript and CSS are loaded mostly render-blocking, with 91.8% of JavaScript and 89.47% of CSS loaded in this way. Furthermore, only 40.8% of JavaScript and 15.9% of CSS is used until render. This shows that, on average, web pages have significant room for improvement. The concept, which is then developed based on the results of this analysis, aims to load web pages in a new way by streaming all render-blocking content. The related work showed that multiple sub-techniques are required first, which were conceptualized next. First, an optimization and splitting tool for CSS is proposed, called Essential. This is followed by an optimization framework concept for JavaScript, consisting of Waiter and AUTRATAC. Lastly, a backward-compatible approach was developed, which allows for splitting HTML and streaming all content to a client. The evaluation showed that the streamed web page loads significantly faster when comparing FCP, content ”Above-the-Fold,” and total transfer time of all render-blocking resources of the document. For example, the case study test determined that the streamed page could reduce the time until FCP by 83.3% at 2 Mbps and the time until the last render-blocking data is transferred by up to 70.4% at 2 Mbps. Furthermore, existing streaming methods were also compared, determining that WebSockets meets the requirements to stream web page content sufficiently. Lastly, an anonymous online user questionnaire showed that 85% of users preferred this new style of loading pages.

E-health usage and experiences among physiotherapists in Sweden : a pilot survey / Användning och erfarenheter av E-hälsoverktyg bland fysioterapeuter i Sverige : en pilotenkätstudieJohansson, Emma, Sikström, Jill January 2022 (has links)
Background: The endeavour for more effective and personalised health care requires exploration and implementation of new methods. Digital technology solutions may offer increased accessibility and efficiency and have already been proven to be both time- and cost-effective. Increased knowledge of the use and experience of e-health tools among physiotherapists may lay the ground for further development. Objective: To explore and describe the usage and experiences among Swedish physiotherapists' regarding e-health tools and evaluate which are the most used technologies. Method: A digital survey translated with cross-cultural adaptation was sent out to physiotherapists in Sweden invited to participate through digital platforms. Data were descriptively analysed and presented in tables, box diagrams, and statistical analysis was performed in Jamovi with Fisher's exact test. Results: 111 physiotherapists responded to the digital survey, but only 72 completed all of it because of a technical error. One of the most common digital tools to use was technological communication where 70% used it for their patients. The attitudes towards digital tools were generally positive among the respondents, but about 20% was however neutral in their attitude. No significant relationship was found between the variables dependent on digital tools and professional experience (p = 0.61) or to workplace (p = 0.11), respectively. Conclusion: Swedish physiotherapists in this pilot study have a positive attitude towards digital health tools. However, different tools are used to different extents, and many physiotherapists do not consider themselves dependent on them in their professional life. Further investigation is needed about opinions and experiences in the field of e-health, as well as regarding advantages and disadvantages of digital tools for further development and implementation in the clinics.

Usability Testing for e-Portfolio Websites in an Academic Environment: A Qualitative Study / Usability Testing for ePortfolio Websites in an Academic EnvironmentReborn, Jaime 12 1900 (has links)
Many academic institutions are tasked with trying to improve the usability of their online educational support technologies such as ePortfolios, intelligent websites, and other interface technology to make them as efficient as possible to meet the requirements of their end users. This is particularly important for the academic institutions during times and situations when they may not have a live human presence available to respond to various inquiries from their end users about the technology. The challenges of an academic institution in making its ePortfolios viable can cost itself, its end users, as well as its other stakeholders, money, time, and confidence in the technology. This study is about usability testing for improving the user-interface for ePortfolios. This is a qualitative study using the think-aloud protocol (TAP) for data collection and failure modes and effects analysis (FMEA) for data analysis.
