Wider die Ges(ch)ichtslosigkeit der Frau: Weibliche Selbstbewusstwerdung zu Anfang des 17. Jahrhunderts am Beispiel der Sibylle Schwarz (1621-1638)Ganzenmueller, Petra 05 1900 (has links)
This dissertation focuses on the emergence of self-awareness in women of the early 17th
century as exemplified by Sibylle Schwarz (1621-1638), a native of Greifswald in North
Germany. It analyses the feminist components of her work. Her poetic production,
preserved in the anthology Deutsche Poetische Gedichte (1650), consists of 105 poems,
four prose introductions and three letters. It is the output of a writer whose short life of
17 years plays itself out against the backdrop of a century shattered by the Thirty Years'
War, religious strife, the plague, oppression and social unrest.
Topics such as friendship, love, female self-awareness, or the contrasting realities of
women and men are the themes through which she explores an androcentric society
and establishes herself as an advocate for the acceptance of women as full members of
society. With her motto Du solst mich doch nicht unterdrucken ("You shall not suppress
me") she insists on her equality as a woman and a writer. The defiance of her "natural"
role as a woman expresses itself ambivalently, through observing social conventions
while at the same time striving to undermine them. Sibylle Schwarz, unlike any other
German bourgeois woman author between 1550 and 1650, has written poetry engaging
in social criticism that corroborates and at the same time transcends the inferior status
of women within a patriarchal structure. This unique nature of her writings makes
them an important milestone in the emergence of female intellectual autonomy.
The first two of six major sections state the goals of my research, a survey of the
materials used and the methodology to be followed. Part III sets the context of a society
in which women were limited to a narrow range of roles. In Part IV the conditions in
which women lived, worked, and were brought up, from the institutionalised lack of
educational opportunity to social, conventional and legal barriers to their full
participation in society are being explored. Part V gives an extensive analysis of Sibylle
Schwarz's work, relating it to her personal situation and to the themes already
developed, with an accounting of her thoughts and ideas about her culture, her society
and her gender. Part VI summarises the work and states its conclusions.

Rifts in time and in the self : two generations of GDR women writers and the development of the female subject (Christa Wolf, Brigitte Reimann, Helga Künigsdorf, Helga Schubert)Dueck, Cheryl E. January 1999 (has links)
This dissertation examines the development of the female literary subject in the work of two generations of women writers of the GDR, represented by Christa Wolf (1929), Brigitte Reimann (1931--1973), Helga Konigsdorf (1936) and Helga Schubert (1941). The objectives are twofold: first, to assess the influence of two opposing discursive frameworks of subjectivity, the socialist and the psychoanalytic, on the works of these writers, and second, to examine the effects of an ideological disjuncture of two generations on their literary production. / The first generation to embark on a literary career in the GDR, with great aspirations for the socialist project, is represented by Wolf and Reimann. A shift in political parameters meant that the following generation of writers, including Konigsdorf and Schubert, was faced with a pre-determined ideological structure, unsatisfactory to them. Accordingly, a diachronic investigation of the literary subject is pursued, and reveals the shift between these generations. As a result, rifts in time, in the subject, and rifts between the subject and its time are exposed. / In the 1960s, Wolf and Reimann rejected the literary female subject's role as an agent in the implementation of socialism. Crises in GDR social structures and crises of the psyche are shown to overlap and to result in divided subjects. The non-contemporaneity of Marxism begins to surface in the 1970s, and the rift in time affects the female subjects of Wolf and Reimann, which increasingly fragment Konigsdorf's and Schubert's short prose of the late 1970s reveals a rejection of the unified Marxist subject and the move toward a notion of the self informed by Freudian psychoanalysis. In the 1980s, the effects of the socio-political environment prove fatal to the individual subject in the works by both generations, and parallels are drawn to the National Socialist past. These links instigate a fundamental reevaluation of standards in language, power and cycles of history at the crossroads of life and death. The post-Wende period witnesses a shift away from problems of subjectivity in the texts of Konigsdorf and Schubert, while Wolf initially experiments with the postmodern, and most recently, surprisingly re-consolidates the female subject.

The diligent dilettante : women writers in Germany, 1770-1820Fronius, Helen January 2003 (has links)
The thesis sets out to explain the presence of women writers in the book market of the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. In order to do so, it examines the position of women writers in Germany - in the context both of their discursive and of their social reality. The thesis investigates the ideological and material background for women's writing, by exploring the areas of gender ideology, contemporary concepts of authorship, women's reading, and the literary market. The final chapter examines women's freedom of expression in different public circumstances. The thesis argues that women's position in the business of culture in general and literature in particular is not as unpromising as has often been claimed. By investigating less well-known texts on gender roles, such as eighteenth-century journal articles, it is possible to show that the rhetoric of prohibitions, for example regarding women's reading and writing, was by no means uniform, but fragmentary and frequently contradictory. Women's own responses to the conditions under which they were working are highlighted throughout the thesis, and examined on the basis of a range of texts, including unpublished correspondence. The examination of non-literary factors, such as the expansion of the literary market and the emergence of a newly diverse reading public, enables the identification of causes other than gender as determining women's position as writers during this period. In the course of this study, numerous neglected texts are considered, which broaden our understanding of this period of literature. The creative and successful use which women writers made of the opportunities they were afforded is emphasised throughout, thereby making an important contribution to the study of women writers.
