The following pages comprise a translation of the whose sanskrit title was presumably the apramanartha sutra from the 'Yuan' Edition of 1290 A.D., together with an introduction by liu Ch'iu . It was first translated from the sanskrit into Chinese by Dharmagstayadas, a Buddhist monk from North Central India, with the help of Hui Piao, In 485 A.D. La the Wu Tang mountains. The Sanskrit version is not avallable, while there are known to be four Chinese editions of the sutra. They are the (Kao-Ll RAtston 1115 A.D.), 2舊宋本 (the Old Sung Idition 1104-1148 A.D.), (the Yuan Edition 1290 A.D.), and the Ming Idition 1601 A,D.). Although the pre- sent translation was based on the Yuas text, with which the translators have been faniliar for many years, 1t has been compared throughout with the Kao-Ii Idition (Taisbo 276), and an appendix of the variations is added at the end.

Wu-Group's Literary Theories and Its Poetry and Prose in Early M'ing Dynasty.

Over the last twenty years, increasing attention has been paid to the performance of speech acts in varied languages. However, the speech event of advising has received less attention than speech acts such as complimenting and requesting, and there have been comparatively few studies focusing on non-Indo-European languages. Based on the discourse analysis of 30 hours of naturally occurring conversation in Jinyun Wu Chinese in College and major advising sessions, this study describes the speech event of advising, including the component speech acts of advice-requesting and advice-giving. The roles of the variables, social distance and social power relations and the relationship between indirectness and politeness are examined. Contra Brown and Levinson (1987), it is argued that the primary nature of advice requesting and giving in the typical Chinese college application process is face enhancing rather than face threatening, due to the high regard in which advisors, including parents, are held, and the strong sense of social responsibility assumed to exist. It is more consistent with the traditional Chinese notions of face, Tian and mianzi, which are still very strong values in Chinese society. Even though advice may be rejected, generally advice giving by teachers and parents in the process of choosing a college and major by a high school graduate is still strongly considered to be desirable assistance and a sign of caring. / Department of English

The author seeks to compare the Chinese and English editions of Wu Zhuoliu’s (1900-1976) Orphan of Asia (1956). Through the analysis of several characters and the political ambiguity within the text, the author first attempts to compare the two target translations of the original Japanese text. In addition to the close reading of the novel(s), the author employs paratextual analysis of the Chinese and English versions of the story in order to challenge the publishing practices of translation. The re-reading of translations thus includes an investigation of the content of the story as well as the packaging of the text. The objectives of this project include adding to the research completed on Wu’s canonical text, in translation studies, and in paratextual studies.

Quels peuvent être les espaces d’interaction entre écriture et écologie – comprises toutes deux dans leur sens large – à l’ère de l’Anthropocène ? En prenant pour pivot de réflexion les textes de Wu Ming-yi吳明益 (1971-), auteur taïwanais contemporain, cette thèse souhaite interroger ces interactions à travers trois modalités :1) la mise en narration de l’environnement naturel : que signifie « écrire la nature » ? Quelles incidences esthétiques, politiques, ontologiques induisent l’utilisation de la catégorie discursive de « nature » et son dépassement, à travers par exemple l’écriture de l’espace urbain, au profit d’une « écopoétique » ?2) l’écriture et la pratique écologiste : comment l’écriture investit les plateformes idéologiques, de la réécriture de l’histoire (post)coloniale de Taïwan à la résistance militante ?3) l’écriture et l’imagination littéraire de devenirs-humain et de devenirs-monde alternatifs : comment l’écriture peut fait naître la possibilité d’envisager l’existence d’un monde commun respectueux du divers ?À l’appui d’une lecture écocritique des œuvres de Wu Ming-yi – sans limitation de genre (romans, nouvelles, essais et même travaux académiques) – et leur mise en perspective avec d’autres textes (littéraires ou non) et issus d’horizons géographiques différents, l’objectif de cette thèse est ainsi de réfléchir sur la poétique de la relation telle qu’elle s’exprime dans l’appropriation par Wu de problématiques environnementales dans le contexte spécifique de Taïwan.Nous essaierons de nous intéresser plus particulièrement à l’écopoétique en tant que réflexion sur l’idée de « nature », en tant que programme cosmopolitique et en tant que philosophie concrète et rhizomatique de la Relation. / Due to its highly transversal dimension, the contemporary paradigm of the Anthropocene forces us to profoundly rethink the mapping of knowledge domains. Then, how to reconsider the interstitial spaces between ecology and writing, at an age when the human influence has become the most powerful geophysical force on the planet? By focusing mainly on the Taiwanese contemporary writer Wu Ming-yi 吳明益 (1971-), this thesis addresses these interactions through three lenses: 1) writing and observation of the natural environment; 2) writing and environmental 2 activism and 3) writing and the literary imagination of alternative relational becomings. This thesis offers an ecocritical reading of Wu Ming-yi’s works putting them into perspective with other texts (literary or not) coming from different geographical backgrounds. This study aims at highlighting the way in which Wu’s texts are creating a kind of poetics of Relation in the socio-historical context of Taiwan, in a time when ecological crisis transcend our normative conceptions of the local and the global.
