Multinational Manga Memories: Osamu Tezuka’s Postwar Japanese Critique of Nationalism in Message to AdolfWong-Lifton, Anyi 01 January 2018 (has links)
Manga masterpiece Message to Adolf’s fictional narrative intertwines the Holocaust, romance, espionage, and friendship in its international World War II-focused narrative. Using theory on nationalism and Japanese memories of WWII, this thesis argues the violence the characters initiate and suffer blurs lines between perpetrator, hero, and victim to critique the power of nationalism. Its message concerning the danger of nationalism is as applicable for global audiences now as when it was published in 1985.

Bringing Mormon Discourse out of the Twilight: Exploring how Fans Recognize, Reflect, Reinterpret, and Resist Multiple Discourses in and around the Seductive SagaJanuary 2015 (has links)
abstract: ABSTRACT
The purpose of this study is to explore how LDS (Mormon) fans of Stephenie Meyer's Twilight saga make meanings from the text in the blogging community known as the Bloggernacle. It investigates how fans recognize, reflect, reinterpret, and resist meanings surrounding multiple Big "D" Discourses (Gee, 1999/2010; 2011) in and around the text. It examines the ways in which LDS fans (Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints) of the Twilight saga use language in order to signify membership in a particular Discourse. In addition, it seeks to understand how LDS fans use language to perform various identities and position themselves and others within the digital space.
This dissertation study analyzes the threads of five blogs and three discussion forums using the combined methods of critical ethnography (Carspecken, 1996) and Gee's (1999, 2010;2011) discourse analysis. It concludes, that, while multiple Discourses are present within the conversational threads, mainstream Mormon Discourse remains dominant and normalized within the space, which both informs and limits the interpretations available to Mormon fans. In addition, identity performance is negotiated in the blogs, and members form specific sub-communities within the Bloggernacle so as to create a space for those with distinct ways of believing, valuing, knowing, and identifying. / Dissertation/Thesis / Doctoral Dissertation Curriculum and Instruction 2015

From Fiction to Fact to Potential Action: Generating Prosocial Attitudes and Behaviors Using Young Adult LiteratureJanuary 2017 (has links)
abstract: This dissertation investigates the impact reading Young Adult Literature (YAL) has on students' empathetic responses as well as their capacity to take action regarding a social justice issue chosen by the student. Drawing on data from a 10th grade honors classroom at a Title 1 school in the Southwest, this ethnographic case study investigates how students use YAL to formulate knowledge construction, empathetic responses, action plans and personal healing. Data for this research includes ethnographic fieldnotes, semi-structured participant interviews, daily journals and a focus group interview. Throughout this study, the teacher and researcher worked together to develop a flexible curriculum that implemented YAL and social activist ideas, such as investigation into action plans and discussion surrounding ways to make change. Results demonstrate that students who had some prior experience with an issue, coupled with identification with a helper character from the novel were more inclined to attempt to take tangible, victim-focused action, whereas students with no prior experience with an issue or those who identified overtly with the victim in the novel were likely to create action plans that spread awareness for others who were unaware of the complexities of the issue. Additionally, the students who had little exposure to the social justice issue they chose demonstrated a level of productive discomfort and a shift in the way they perceived the complexities of the issue. The importance of YAL in the students' social and emotional growth, coupled with an opportunity to create civically minded citizens signals the growing importance of this type of literature in a socially minded world. / Dissertation/Thesis / Doctoral Dissertation English 2017

Construindo histórias de leitura : a leitura dialógica enquanto elemento de articulação no interior de uma "biblioteca vivida" /Ferreira, Eliane Aparecida Galvão Ribeiro. January 2009 (has links)
Abstract: This work is the result of an investigation, developed for three years, targeted to the literature teaching and to train the reader in the school environment. As a general objective, with this work was searched to reflect on how the reader is trained and the choices and preferences are articulated by certain authors and certain works. From the development of this research, it was able to realize a survey of the repertoire of works read from 1998 to 2000 by students in the 5th, 6th and 7th grades, as well as diagnosing which works are attractively regarded by them. Among those considered the most attractive, it was examined in this thesis the work Harry Potter and the philosopher's Stone by J. K. Rowling, elected in the modality: reading proposed by the teacher. The analysis, based on the aesthetic reception, aimed to detect the horizon of the students' expectation, by means of the work reception. Concomitant to the works selected by the students, it was developed a work based on the constructivist principles towards reading of several texts by different authors in order to make them to broaden their horizon of expectation. For that, it was used the aesthetic reader concept, privileging, as the reading methodology, the reading act as an exercise of artistic and cultural comparisons which the text brings in itself. / Doutor

literatura juvenil / This thesis will discuss the relationship between the coming of age novel and young-adult
literature in English-language literature. Although each of the two genres has its own
peculiarities, neither of them has well-defined contours. Therefore, relevant theoretical
aspects of each genre will be examined in order to reach the main goal of this work: to
describe and characterize the young-adult Bildungsroman. Three novels were selected for
analysis: Great Expectations (1860), by Charles Dickens, The Catcher in The Rye (1951), by
J.D. Salinger – both of which will be used to outline the tradition of the coming of age novel
and its evolution – and Drums, Girls and Dangerous Pies (2004), by Jordan Sonnenblick, a
paradigmatic example of the manifestation of the genre in young-adult literature

THE MALE MENTOR FIGURE IN WOMEN'S FICTION, 1778-1801Evans, Jessica R. 01 January 2017 (has links)
This dissertation follows the development of the mentor figure from Frances Burney’s Evelina published in 1778 to Maria Edgeworth’s Belinda in 1801. The mentor becomes a key figure for exploring women’s revolutionary ideas on female education and women’s roles in society. My dissertation contributes to discussions on mentoring, development of the Gothic mode, and debates over sensibility and sentimental fiction. It considers how the female mentee paradoxically both desires and criticizes her male mentor and his authority. Each author under discussion employed the mentor figure in a way that addressed their contemporary society’s issues and prejudices toward the treatment of women and the power of sensibility. Much of this treatment was traced to a conversation of reforming female education from an accomplishment-based pedagogy to a moral, intellectual-based instruction that was more masculine in nature (emphasizing a balance between sensibility and reason).
Frequently, the mentor provides general comments and recommendations about love to his female pupil, who is entering into the marriage market, but his advice often turns out to be wrong or misplaced since it does not fit the actual situation. He is a good spiritual guide but a poor romantic advisor. I assert that the mentor figure’s usual lack of romantic sentiment and his pupil’s ability to surpass him in matters of the heart reveal a tendency to subvert male authority. Throughout this discussion, questions related to gender arise. Women’s desire for their own agency and control over both their minds and bodies underpin much of women’s eighteenth-century fiction. My dissertation explores these complex relationships between male mentors and their female pupils.

Critical Thinkers through The Hunger Games : Working with Dystopian Fiction in the EFL ClassroomSelzer, Dominik January 2017 (has links)
This essay gives examples of possible ways to inspire young adults to become politically more aware and active using dystopian fiction in the EFL classroom. First, an overview of the dystopian genre and different ways of using it in the EFL classroom to improve critical thinking skills will be given. Subsequently, different scenes from The Hunger Games will be analyzed to show how young adults can be inspired to be more aware of social and environmental justice and to act. Finally, it is discussed why literary material in a classroom must relate to a student’s personal life and why the relevance must be explained to a student to raise their interest. As a conclusion, it is claimed that it cannot be expected that all students care for the world, but showing them why they should and how they could do it is a first step.

“Fetch M’Dear”: Healers, Midwives, Witches, and Conjuring Women in Select YA and Toni Morrison NovelsMallett-Birkitt, Diane 01 December 2020 (has links)
Accusations and persecution of witchcraft have been embedded in global culture for centuries. For as long as these persecutions have occurred, women have found themselves accused most frequently. Older women with herbal knowledge were often called on to assist with childbirth or termination of pregnancies and this “secret knowledge” often led them to be suspected of supernatural abilities, often of a satanic nature. Intrigued by these wise women who appeared to have mysterious powers and a penchant for arousing the ire of men in the legal, medical, and religious communities, I began to notice their frequent appearance in novels. Does the presence of actual or perceived magic serve to improve the women’s status in their community? I reviewed several examples of YA literature, two picture books, and four Toni Morrison novels to determine if magic, conjuring, and witchcraft were more powerful threats than sexism and racism.

Translating Françoize Boucher’s Le Livre Qui t’Explique Enfin Tout sur les Parents for US Audiences: Playing with Words and ImagesBugaeva, Evgeniya 18 March 2015 (has links)
The focus of this thesis is my translation of Le livre qui t'explique enfin tout sur les parents by Françoize Boucher from French into English. Chapter one begins with a brief history and definition of children’s literature, as well as children’s literature in translation. I discuss the subgenre of informational picturebooks—its objectives, characteristics, and current trends. What follows is a short biographic and bibliographic sketch of Françoize Boucher. Then, I discuss the content, format, style, and illustrations of Le livre qui t'explique as well as examine the work’s audience, aims, and values. Finally, I discuss my English translation of the work—providing an overview of the translation strategies and methodologies that I used. Chapter two focuses on specific challenges encountered during the translation process. The chapter begins with the challenge of translating culturally significant topics such as French cultural references, brands, slang, and metric measurements. Then, I discuss the translation of linguistically bound terms such as wordplay, the use of English in a French text, and onomatopoeia. Finally, I discuss the translation of taboo subjects. Chapter three is my complete English-language translation: The Book That Finally Explains About Your Parents.
