Mechanisms of laser melt injection synthesis of carbide reinforced stainless steel composites.

Obadele, Babatunde Abiodun. January 2011 (has links)
Thesis (MTech. degree in Metallurgical Engineering)--Tshwane University of Technology, 2011. / The mechanisms by which stainless steel matrix surface composites reinforced with titanium carbide (TiC) and tungsten carbide (WC) cermets synthesized using laser technique was investigated in this study. The relationships between process parameters and the properties of the synthesized composite were studied. The morphologies and microstructures of the composite coatings were investigated using optical microscopy and high resolution scanning electron microscopy equipped with an energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS), while the phase change and interactions were observed using x-ray diffraction (XRD). Surface hardness of the composite layers was determined using the Vickers microhardness tester while its corrosion behaviour in 3.5% NaCl solution was investigated by using potentiodynamic polarization curve measurement method.TiC reinforced 2507 DSS showed a greater resistance to corrosion than 304L austenitic and 2205 duplex stainless steel in the medium. This was attributed to the presence of titanium and equal volume proportion of ferrite and austenite in the structure of the 2507 stainless steel coupled with higher content of chromium in its composition.

Service delivery and the South African police service community service centres : an evaluative study of East Rand, Gauteng

Zondi, Phineas. January 2012 (has links)
Thesis (MTech. degree in Safety and Security Management.)--Tshwane University of Technology, 2012. / Community Service Centres of the South African Police Service usually referred to as charge offices are the only offices which remain opened daily, on a 24 hour basis to provide services to the community relating to safety and security. However, little is known on the extent to which services rendered by these offices are effective and the problems militating against their optimal service delivery to the clients, especially in the present dawn of public clamouring for effective service delivery in South Africa. Against this background, the motivation of this study was to investigate the effectiveness of police officials employed at the Community Service Centres in the East Rand Area with regard to quality of services provided to community members as clients and the associated problems.

Stakeholders and shared decision-making in Atteridgeville schools : a survey .

Phalatse, Mathota Adelina. January 2011 (has links)
Thesis (MTech. degree in Education.)--Tshwane University of Technology, 2011. / South Africa emanated from a centralised education system, which was characterised by apartheid laws, policies and principles. These policies and principles allowed little opportunity for community participation during decision making. The community, parents, educators and learners had little say on educational matters affecting them. The hierarchical methods of schools determined the processes, styles and effectiveness of decision-making within those schools. These hierarchies are contrary to the basic human drive to learn, to find work meaningful, and to express creativity, responsibility and competence. The purpose of this study was to deepen and examine the understanding leadership practices that promote shared decision-making in schools.

Thinking style preference profile of the contemporary administrative professional

Venter, A. J. January 2011 (has links)
Thesis (MTech. degree in Office Management and Technology)--Tshwane University of Technology, 2011. / The aim of this research was to establish the ideal thinking style preference profile of the administrative professional for optimal functioning in the new work environment (referred to as the contemporary work arena). The administrative professionals were also assessed to quantify their preferred distinct type on the NBI(registered trademark) 8-Dimension Model. The relationship provided evidence that the administrative professional is required to demonstrate more right brain thinking style preferences to enable her to support the executive officer effectively. The study concluded that the current administrative professional has not yet adopted the preferred thinking style preferences for effectively supporting her executive officer in the new world of work.

Optimization of base station placement for uneven traffic in cellular networks using genetic algorithms.

Philemon, B. R. January 2008 (has links)
M. Tech. Electrical Engineering. / Aims to optimize base station placement in a network area using multi-objective GAs to maximize coverage while minimizing cost. This well be done by considering varying traffic demand, interference between cells, availability of base station sites and taking into account different propagation environments i.e. urban, suburban and rural area.

Nickel-cobalt catalysis supported on carbonaceous materials for the hydrogenation of Cinnamaldehyde.

Malobela, Lankitsi Joshua. January 2011 (has links)
Thesis (M.Tech. in Chemistry)--Tshwane University of Technology, 2011. / Examines the possible factors responsible for catalyst deactivation occurring on nickel and cobalt bimetallic catalysts supported on different carbonaceous materials (i.e. multi-walled carbon nanotubes, activated carbon and graphite).

Synthesis of ruthenium dye (N3 dye) from recycled ruthenium trichloride for application in dye sensitized solar cells.

Mogale, David Mphara. January 2009 (has links)
Thesis (MTech. degree in Chemistry)--Tshwane University of Technology, 2009.

Design of a novel adsorption process for recovering PGMs from leach solutions.

Mbaya, Richard Kady Kadiambuji. January 2008 (has links)
D. Tech. Chemical and Metallurgical Engineering. / Aims to develop a continuous process model for extracting platinum from a mixed chloride solution selectively and to establish the conditions under which the platinum content in the feed solution could be upgraded hundred times. The continuous adsorption test will be carried out by using an ideal batch reactor and a packed bed column. The mass transfer characteristics associated with these two process units will be studied and compared along whether other parameters such as adsorption rate constants, selectivity and metal upgrade capability.Comprehensive data will be generated beginning with multicomponent adsorption test results (isotherm ) diffusivities and thermodynamic properties (enthalpy of adsorption)

Time-to-degree: identifying factors for predicting completion of four year undergraduate degree programmes in the built environment at the University of Witwatersrand

Mamvura, Innocent 29 April 2013 (has links)
A research report submitted to Faculty of Science, University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg, in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Science, 2012. / The study aims to identify the variables which best predict completion of four year undergraduate degree programmes, in the Schools of Construction Economics and Management and Architecture and Planning, at the University of Witwatersrand (Wits) in South Africa. The research is important to the University and in particular the schools under investigation, because there are only a few studies done in South African universities on this topic and it will contribute to the knowledge on variables that positively influence Time-to-Degree. Selected demographic variables such as Gender, Race, and Home Language were analysed. Other variables considered include: University Courses, First Year Scores, Matric Aggregate, Financial Aid and Residence Status. The Binary Logistic Models, a Multinomial Logistic Model and Classification Tree Model were developed to test for the significance of the predictor variables at 5% level of significance. The Statistical packages that were used in the analysis of data are Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS), Statistical Analysis System (SAS). The logistic regression models indicated that Home Language is English and the first year university course Building Quantities 1 are the most important predictors of Time-to-Degree. The other variables that were significant are Gender is Female, Not Repeat, Theory & Practice of QS 1, Architectural Representation I, Building Quantities 1, Construction Planning and Design, Physics Building and Planning for Property Developers. Architectural Representation I, Building Quantities 1, Construction Planning and Design, Physics Building and Planning for Property Developers. Matric Aggregate is an important predictor of university first year success though it has no impact on TTD. The Classification Tree indicated that passing first year at university was significant as it increases the chances of completing the degree programme within the minimum time.
