Programs to promote physical activity among children and adolescents : a case study of the Team Bath Tribe Project

Koorts, Harriet January 2012 (has links)
Background: Physical inactivity has been identified as the fourth leading risk factor for global mortality. Despite public health guidelines advising children and adolescents to spend a minimum of 60 minutes per day of at least moderate intensity physical activity, a large proportion of children and adolescents fail to meet these guidelines. Interventions promoting physical activity show varying degrees of success, and more detailed evaluations of such interventions are essential. The aim of this research was to conduct an in-depth evaluation of a community-based physical activity program aimed at children and adolescents, specifically the Tribe Project. Methods: The RE-AIM framework (Reach, Effectiveness, Adoption, Implementation and Maintenance) was used to evaluate the individual and organisational-level impact of the Tribe Project. A single mixed method case study was used based on five sources of evidence: interviews, questionnaires, documentation, archival records and direct observations. Participants included the Tribe managers and coaches implementing the program and the Tribe parents and children/adolescents who attended. Results: The Tribe Project reached approximately 2.5% of the eligible population living within Bath and North East Somerset. The program successfully met some of its objectives although feedback procedures were poor and the program aims were unclear. The community-level adoption of the program was high, however, the implementation and adherence to the program principles at the setting-level varied. The program was successfully institutionalised within the University of Bath yet pathways after the program into the community varied, and were mostly competitive only. Nonetheless, a combination of social, psychological and physical benefits was reported following participation. Conclusion: To assess accurately the potential impact of physical activity interventions a combined assessment of individual and organisational-level factors is necessary. This will help inform policy on effective strategies to promote physical activity in the community, and develop interventions that are more effective as a result.

Study on the Predicament and Transformation of Festivals with Local Characteristics : An Example of Song Jiang Jhen Battle Array in Neimen, Kaohsiung

Chiu, Chi-Pin 29 June 2012 (has links)
Local festivals have become a significant resource and trend in regional development. In Taiwan, there are twelve important local festivals; only the Song Jiang Jhen Battle Array in Neimen, Kaohsiung has been listed for the Kaohsiung area. It reveals its local characteristics and traditions, as well as the cultural intention. However, most related researches focused on issues of visitors¡¦ behavior and tourist satisfaction; no analysis and review of implementation facets was completed. This qualitative research was carried out with the festival of Song Jiang Jhen Battle Array in Neimen, Kaohsiung taken as the case study. By conducting a textual analysis, participant observation and in-depth interview, the study aims to explore the following four facets relate to the implementation of the festival, i.e. organization operation, content planning and management, community participation and marketing strategy. Furthermore, after analyzing the contents of literature and case review, 14 indicating items were generalized from each facet so that the status of conducting the Song Jiang Jhen Battle Array in Neimen, Kaohsiung can be reviewed. Its indicating items and main factors of success that conform to a great festival were analyzed. The predicaments encountered in its development were also researched. Relevant proposals of transformation strategy was provided and submitted to the organizers of local government as applicable strategies for future activity arrangement. The study results showed that the Song Jiang Jhen Battle Array in Neimen, Kaohsiung completely conforms to the pattern of a successful festival and the indications include: the attitude of the organizer in arranging sustainable activities, the unique theme, cultural characteristics and local imagery, diversity and creativity of activity concepts, as well as the contribution of community organization and local volunteers. Some indications did not conform to the festival, such as the interaction with visitors/tourists, atmosphere and management of the field, infrastructure and traffic network. Other indications partly conformed to the success of the festival. The interviewees particularly pointed out that the key successful factors of the Song Jiang Jhen Battle Array in Neimen, Kaohsiung include: regularly held every year; the support of authorities; the characteristics and creativity both attract many visitors; the assistance of experienced operators; religious beliefs and folk culture; TV live transmission of the competitions; etc. The predicaments it faces include: lack of a set budget; no cooperation among three local temples: they are operating units with the venue changing annually; no profound connection with local industries; the festival¡¦s purpose does not conform to the traveling mechanism; no guidance for a long-term planning; focus only on local prospects; local government does not care much about tourism; no gathering of community strength; the date of the activity cannot be confirmed as early as possible; the scope of marketing between local and central government is varied and most of the marketing ideas are focused on the creative Song Jiang Jhen Battle Array. Seven transformation strategies were suggested in this study: establishing a communication platform for cooperative units having an interest relationship for this festival, the traditional perspective cannot be abandoned in a traditional event, ¡§originality¡¨ brings out the validity and uniqueness of the festival, a great atmosphere has been made by having an appropriate field management, the festival benefits can be extended to other events, the intention of community development can become the energy supporting local festivals and the festival marketing can go beyond merely promoting the festival.

Mísní akční skupiny v Jižních Čechách - jejich vliv na rozvoj regionu / Local Action Groups in southern Bohemia and their influence on the regional development

SLÍPKOVÁ, Pavla January 2014 (has links)
The topic of the diploma thesis is "Local Action Groups in southern Bohemia and their influence on the regional development". The main aim of the thesis is to evaluate the influence of a chosen Local Action Group (LAG) in the given region of southern Bohemia and to appraise its input from LAG's insiders' points of view. The theoretical part explains basic terms related to Common Agricultural Policy, Rural Development Programme, LEADER method and functioning of a Local Action Group. The applied part is divided into two sections. The first one introduces LAGs in southern Bohemia and their evaluations, including financial contribution to the region. Moreover, detailed characterisation of LAG Třeboňsko was brought forth. The second section focuses on survey among insiders of LAG Třeboňsko and their opinion on its activities in the region. Controlled interviews with the representatives of the LAG were used as a main tool to find out attitude of the LAG's management as well as its members. The interviews were conducted with two groups first within the public sector represented by leaders of individual microregions and second within the private sector represented by the associated entrepreneurs. The function of the LAG was evaluated based on the survey results. Thanks to the interviews with LAG's insiders, it is possible to conclude that LAG Třeboňsko works on a good level and its members percept its influence in the region's development positively and as well-founded.

Développement d'une méthode originale pour l'évaluation de l'activité virucide des antiseptiques - désinfectants : détermination du pouvoir antiseptique de calixarènes sur le coronavirus Humain / Development of an original method for antiviral antiseptic-disinfectant activity evaluation : determination of antiseptic properties of calixarenic compounds on the Human coronavirus 229E

Geller, Chloé 13 July 2010 (has links)
Son activité s'est en effet avérée plus rapide, rémanente et dénuée de cytotoxicité, contrairement à la CHX / Efficient antisepsis-disinfection is fundamental, considering the lack in antiviral treatments, the emergence of new viruses and the raising of viral nosocomial infections. Only one European Standard (NF EN 14476 + A1) proposes a frame to evaluate antiseptic antiviral activity in Human medicine and some improvements are still needed. We thus developed and validated, biologically and physico-chemically, a virucidal assay based on an original gel filtration method, using “in-house” G-25 and G-10 Sephadex™ columns, as neutralization method. We evaluated, on the Human coronavirus 229E (HCoV 229E), the antiseptic activity of two reference molecules, chlorhexidine (CHX) and hexamidine (HXM), and of two new potent antiviral drugs: the tetra-para-sulfonatocalix[4]arene (C[4]S) and the 1,3-bis(bithiazolyl)-tetra-para-sulfonato calix[4]arene (C[4]S-BTZ). A 4 log10 reduction in viral titers is required, according to the European Standard.HXM and C[4]S showed almost no activity on the HCoV 229E. Considering the CHX, it showed a quite interesting activity, even if it did not reach the threshold to pretend to an antiseptic activity on the HCoV 229E. Finally, The C[4]S-BTZ showed a comparable activity to the CHX, and even better. Thanks to this original method, we could highlight a new interesting molecule, the C[4]S-BTZ, which showed a close activity to the CHX, but faster, residual and exempt of cytotoxicity, whereas chlorhexidine did

Charles University Faculty of Pharmacy in Hradec Králové Study program: Healthcare Bioanalytics Author: Bc. Adéla Diepoltová Supervisor: RNDr. Klára Konečná, Ph.D. Title of thesis: Optimization of the method for sensitivity evaluation of biofilm- forming staphylococci against candidate antimicrobial compounds Background: The aim of this thesis was to optimize approach for in vitro formation of staphylococcal biofilms on the pegs and on the wells of the 96-well panel as an analogous approach to commercially available Calgary Biofilm Device system. The aim of the Experiment 1 was to evaluate incubation conditions (such as impact of a growth medium, incubation mode, optical density of the starting bacterial inoculum and type of surface) leading to maximal biofilm formation of two biofilm producer strains with unknown biofilm phenotype and one staphylococcal strain known as strong biofilm producer. The most advisable conditions were used in incubation process of Experiment 2. This work should propose the approach leading to in vitro formation of the most voluminous staphylococcal biofilms exploitable for candidate drug antimicrobial activity testing. Methods: Spectrophotometric measurement of the crystal violet colour extracted from wells with fixed and stained Staphylococci to evaluate the ability to...
