Evaluation of a programme to facilitate positive youth development / A.J.W. BrinkBrink, Andrea Johanna Wilhelmine January 2010 (has links)
The South African context, in particular, is characterized by a definite need for the facilitation of the development of the youth in a more positive trajectory. Family structures are not always robust enough to support the positive development of the youth, owing to the demands made on single–parent families, amongst other reasons. Community structures may also be less supportive of the development of the youth, because of the impact of the changes associated with the transitional phase of the country during the past sixteen years (Meehan, Peirson & Fridjhon, 2007). Furthermore, young people under the age of 15 years comprise almost a third of the total South African population (Statistics South Africa, 2009), and in the future, they will have to be prepared for an adulthood faced with previously unknown challenges (United Nations Population Fund). The importance of the development of the youth, in order to enable them to contribute to their country in future, is acknowledged by the South African Governement (National Youth Commission website).
This study was conducted within the parameters of the newly developing positive youth development (PYD) paradigm. The empirical level of this paradigm is well represented in the literature, indicating that the content areas, or the “what” of PYD, have been well elucidated. However, there is a lack of theory, especially with regard to models describing developmental change (Larson et al., 2004), and evaluation of interventions aiming at the facilitation of PYD. In order to contribute to the answering of the questions regarding the “how” of development, this study had the following main aims: a) the compilation of a theoretical model, describing developmental change in the youth; b) the operationalization of this model for intervention purposes; and c) the evaluation of a programme and the model on which it is based. The study is reported on in an article format, and comprises a total of three articles. The first article focuses on the process of the compilation of a theoretical model by means of: a) the construction of a comprehensive meta–theoretical matrix, b) the integration of theory that features in the PYD literature, and c) the expansion of the latter with theory from other compatible sub–disciplines in psychology. The resultant Positive Youth Development Intervention (PYDI) model provides a process–related description of developmental change ? and is one of the first models to do so.
The second article describes the operationalization of the PYDI model, by means of an indication of the relevant constructs, phenomena and processes to be facilitated. Although recent research points to a relation between PYD and self–regulation, there has been no model, describing the role of self–regulation in the facilitation of the positive development of the youth. This study adapted a model from an educational context (Heckhausen & Gollwitzer, 1987 (as cited in Boekaerts & Niemivirta, 2005)), in order to describe the regular self–regulatory processes constituting the bi–directional interactions between the youth and their primary life contexts, as proposed by developmental systems theory (Lerner, 1998), the meta–theory to PYD (King et al., 2005). A further specifc contribution is that the presentation aspects of the programme material, aimed at facilitating the integration thereof, are addressed on a theoretical level. The third article describes the evaluation of the PYDI model and programme, with young adolescents in a school in a rural area as participants. A mixed–methods study, which has been shown to render much richer information than a quantitative study alone, was applied. Although the quantitative data did not prove the success of the programme, the qualitative data suggested that some aspects of self–regulation had indeed been facilitated successfully. A second follow–up assessment, conducted seventeen months later, indicated that certain skills had only become internalized by that time, suggesting that the implementation and evaluation of such a programme should be expanded over an extended time–frame. This study has contributed to the level of theory of PYD, by indicating, a) the lacunae, and b) that theory in compatible sub–disciplinary paradigms could be used in order to devise workable models for PYD. Furthermore, the process–related nature of the PYDI model and programme, owing to its adaptability to different needs, may be adapted and extended to be applicable to the needs of the diverse South African population. Recommendations regarding future application and research, especially within the South African context, have also been put forward in the study. / Thesis (Ph.D. (Psychology))--North-West University, Potchefstroom Campus, 2011.

Hanteringsriglyne aan spelterapeute on adolessente by te staan wat slagoffers van okkultverwante geloofspraktyke was / Guidelines for play therapists to assist adolescents who had been victims of occult related religious practicesLategan, Louis 11 1900 (has links)
Satanism has a destructive effect on the development and wellbeing of the
adolescent and is known to influence all levels of his or her development.
Satanists use a variety of forms of entrapment and their focus on the individual’s
need of worldly goods, wealth and acceptance makes the adolescent easy prey.
During this study the lack of guidelines, for play therapists who became involved
in the handling of adolescents entrapped in Satanism, was identified as the
research problem. Bearing in mind the research problem, the aim of this study
had thus been formulated, namely to formulate guidelines according to which play
therapists will be enabled to address the problem of adolescents entrapped in
Satanism. To fulfill this aim, the researcher had gathered information by means of
qualitative processes, based on evidence. / Social Work / M. Diac. (Play Therapy)

An exploration of the experiences of adolescents living with HIVPienaar, L.L. (Louisa Leanie) 16 August 2011 (has links)
The research endeavoured to voice the told and untold stories of adolescents living with HIV undergoing continual disease management at the Kalafong Hospital Paediatric HIV Clinic. Through the telling of their stories the adolescents had the opportunity to make sense of their illness experiences. Some of the participating adolescents had limited opportunities to discuss their experiences with friends or family members. The research was completed within the qualitative social constructionist narrative approach. Six adolescents from the clinic participated voluntarily in the research. The participants attended the clinic regularly for disease management and were on ART. The study explored the experiences of the adolescents by means of two semi-structured individual interviews. Expressive art in the form of drawings and poetry were used to aid storytelling. Through collaborative exploration of the adolescents‟ stories, it became possible to co-construct the meanings that they attached to their experiences of HIV, which informs their identity. The interview transcripts were analysed, re-storied, and placed within a narrative framework of understanding, based on the three-dimensional space approach by Clandinin and Connelly (2000). The framework of understanding aided the researcher to look at the different contexts, identities, and social significant aspects found in the adolescents‟ stories. Multiple identities were constructed in their stories such as patient, scholar, friend, family, and athlete identities. These were constructed based on their experiences in the family and cultural, school and social, and medical contexts. The adolescents attributed different meanings to their stories of living with HIV such as that of normality, sameness, realism, and difference. The unique and similar aspects that were found in the adolescents‟ stories were identified and discussed with reference to various concepts such as disclosure, adherence, and ART. It was found that status disclosure was done by staff at the clinic and it occurred during young adolescence. All the adolescents, except one who was not aware of her status, showed insight into the chronic nature of their disease. Five adolescents‟ statuses have not been disclosed to anyone outside the families. In only one instance, the family was not aware of his status. Most adolescents assumed primary responsibility for ART. They expressed conflicting ideas about the role of ART. Some adolescents had to cope with side effects, the possibility of accidental status disclosure and non-adherence, and fears of rejection. The research, employing a narrative approach, endeavours to contribute to create a holistic understanding of HIV/AIDS in the context of health care. Lack of communication and impersonal staff interactions with patients were identified as barriers to disease management. The research recommends that the clinic should provide ongoing support to the adolescents with regards to disclosure of their status to friends, family, and partners, and adherence to medication. The social significant aspects found in the adolescents‟ stories will be disseminated to the staff at the clinic. This will assist the multi-disciplinary team to gain a better understanding of the reality of the adolescent and how these experiences inform their identity. / Dissertation (MA)--University of Pretoria, 2010. / Psychology / unrestricted

Critical thinking of adolescents with regard to political issuesPienaar, Gregory Edward 11 1900 (has links)
Summaries in English and Afrikaans / The second fully democratic election in South Africa is scheduled to take place in May 1999.
In the five years since the first election, it appears that very little attention has been paid to the
political literacy of the electorate in general, and the youth in particular. The purpose of this
study was to establish adolescents' level of political knowledge and whether they are able to
think critically about political issues or not.
The first part of the literature study which was concerned with critical thinking revealed that
the major aspects of critical thinking are: deductive reasoning, inductive inference, recognition
of assumptions, credibility, and problem solving. The second part of the literature study was
an analysis of which factors may play a role in the development of critical thinking of an
adolescent. with particular reference to a political context. The third part was an examination
of important current political and social issues. These were: the new Constitution. Truth and
Reconciliation Commission, housing, land redistribution, education, labour, health, crime,
political violence, environment, and the next election.
A reliable measuring instrument was developed in order to measure adolescents' knowledge
of political issues, and their ability to think critically about these issues. The results of the
empirical study revealed that intellectual potential and academic achievement were
significantly related to critical thinking ability, while gender, environment, and personality
appeared not to play a role. There was a significant correlation between political knowledge
and critical thinking in a political context, implying that critical thinking is subject-specific.
Cultural background also played a significant role in critical thinking in a political context.
In terms of political knowledge, boys were found to be at a significantly higher level than girls.
The subjects from urban areas were also at a significantly higher level than those from rural
areas. There was also a positive correlation between intellectual potential, academic
achievement, and political knowledge.
Finally, some recommendations for improving the levels of political knowledge and critical
thinking abilities with regard to political issues of South African adolescents were given.
Kulturele agtergrond
dogters.
Psychology of Education / D. Ed. (Psychology of Education)

Identifisering van adolessente wat groepdruk moeilik hanteer / The identification of adolescents who have difficulty in dealing with group pressureFourie, Jacob Andries Cornelis 01 1900 (has links)
Daarom stel opvoedkundiges toenemend meer in groepdruk as fenomeen belang.
'n Empiriese ondersoek is uitgevoerwaarby 452 hoerskool adolessente (234 seuns en 228 dogters) betrek is. Benewens groepdruk is verskeie veranderlikes soos verhouding met ouers, verhouding met maats, selfbeeld, waardes, intelligensie en persoonlikheid ook gemeet. Biografiese gegewens soos geslag, ouderdom, demerietes, buitemuurse aktiwiteite en posisie in gesin is ingesluit. Uit die empiriese ondersoek blyk dit dat :
• groepdruk 'n afname toon en verander vanaf graad 8 na graad 12;
The aim of education is to guide the child towards adulthood. An adult is expected to know himself, follow an inherent sense of values, make moral decisions independently and accept responsibility. Group pressure hampers the attainment of the above characteristics during adolescence and therefore makes education problematic. For this reason educationists are taking a growing interest in group pressure as a phenomenon. The aim of this study was to develop a measuring instrument to identify adolescents who find it difficult to deal with group pressure. In addition it was also the aim to determine the most important variables which relate to group pressure. A literature study was undertaken in order to analyse group pressure as a phenomenon, to analyse
the measurability of group pressure and to determine which factors relate to group pressure. An instrument was developed to measure group pressure (reliability coefficient: 0,86). An empiricalinvestigation was carried out involving 452 high school adolescents (234 boys and 228 girls). In addition to group pressure, several variables were measured such as the individual's relationship with parents and friends, his self-concept, values, intelligence and personality. Biographical information such as gender, age, number of demerits, extra mural
activities and birth order was collated.
From the empirical investigation it seems that
• group pressure shows a decline from Grade 8 to 12;
• self concept, age, popularity and relationship with friends can be considered the most
important variables relating to group pressure.

Adolessente seuns se ervaring van die dood van ‘n ouer en ondersteuning binne die skoolopset, Wes-Kaap / Adolescent boys’ experiences of the death of a parent and the support within the school environment, Western CapeKock, Jennobia Ezendel 02 1900 (has links)
Afrikaans text / This study was undertaken to investigate and explore the experience of the death of a parent and the support for Coloured boys, in the middleadolescence phase, within the school context. Five boys were involved in the study. The gender of the parent was not specified; but all the boys had lost their mothers. The adolescent boys indicated that the death of their mothers was a life changing event; that they struggled emotionally after the death of their mothers but they received enough support from the school, friends and peer group. Family relations were disrupted and the boys often handled their mourning alone. They indicated a continued bond with their mothers, developed a greater sense of responsibility and insight into themselves and the emotions of others deepened. The boys stressed the value of social support but the public display of emotions is influenced by their perceptions of masculinity. Vyf seuns is by die studie betrek. / Psychology of Education / M. Ed.
