Estudo de Propriedades Ópticas de Partículas de Aerossóis a partir de uma Rede de Radiômetros / Study of optical properties of aerosol particles with a radiometer network

Yamasoe, Márcia Akemi 16 November 1999 (has links)
Aerosol particles interact with solar radiation both directly and indirectly. The knowledge of their optical properties is essential to the assessment of the impact of these interactions with solar radiation to the Earth climate. A methodology to retrieve the real part of the refractive index of aerosol particles was developed in the present work, using downward diffuse radiati- on measured with a sun/sky radiometer. Simultaneous retrieval of intrinsic parameters of ae- rosol particles was achieved, such as the asymmetry parameter and single scattering albedo. The developed method was applied to measurements performed in different geographic regi- ons, influenced by distinct aerosol types in Brazil, United States and Suriname. The refractive index of aerosol particles of urban origin presented a negative correlation with columnar precipitable water vapor, indicating their hygroscopic nature. The major chemical constituents of urban aerosol particles include sulfate, organic carbon and black carbon. Aero- sol particles measured in the Amazon Basin during the dry season, on the other hand, are less hygroscopic and no significant decrease of the real part of the refractive index was observed with the increase of precipitable water vapor. Long term monitoring of the optical properties of smoke particles showed that smoke particles do not present significant variations from year to year. The presence of a high-pressure system over the Amazon Basin during the dry season associated with regional biomass burning activi- ties caused in the increase of the aerosol optical thickness over the regions of Rondonia and northern portion of Mato Grosso state. During the wet season, significant contributions of Saharan dust were observed in Suriname. Average direct radiative forcing estimates showed that smoke particles can cause a reduction of solar radiation of about 20 Wm-2 in Cuiaba and 45 Wm-2 in Alta Floresta over a period of approximately 60 days during the burning season. The implications of such a reduction in solar radiation to the Amazon ecosystem are still unknown and must be investigated in the near future, as well as the consequences of this reduction of available energy on the local and regi- onal meteorology.

AN INVESTIGATION OF TRENDS IN CARBONACEOUS AEROSOLS OVER NORTH AMERICA

Torbatian, Sara 14 August 2013 (has links)
A long term (1989-2008) decreasing trend in black carbon and organic carbon surface concentrations is indicated by insitu measurements (IMPROVE) in the United States in winter months. The observed percent negative trend is higher in the western United States than the eastern region. This study examines how the observed trend relates to emission inventories of black carbon and organic carbon. Attention is paid to the contribution of emissions from the residential sector to the observed decreasing trend particularly over the western United States. A chemical transport model is used to relate the emission inventories to concentrations. A variety of bottom-up emission inventories are tested. Multiple linear regression was used to estimate the anthropogenic sources contributing to trends in BC and OC concentrations in winter months over US. The larger relative trend of carbonaceous aerosols in the west appears to be driven by the larger relative contribution of residential and transport sources to this region.
