A methodology for the comparative analysis of airport passenger terminal configuration

The right choice between possible types of passenger terminal buildings is the key to a successful airport design project. Historically, in the earlier days of aviation the designer's concern was directed to aircraft and to the adequacy of the ground facilities which each airport provided. As the aviation grew, airport passenger buildings grew more complex and more expensive, to the point of being viewed as a key to the airport's economic performance. In this context, the process of selecting a terminal concept became fundamental for planning and designing airport terminal buildings. However, almost no methodology is available at the initial planning level for the selection of terminal concepts, and very little research has been done in this area.

Airport planning in a liberal setting : methodologies for appropriate airport provision

The thesis uses a comprehensive case study of the UK airport planning process to generate hypotheses to be tested. The hypotheses are that the use of more formal planning disciplines to the expansion of the London area airports would have allowed a more appropriate solution than those apparently preferred by the government; further, that this change in the planning process would only be beneficial if accompanied by changes in the framework for airport planning. It is seen to be necessary that the ground rules are known and that the interactions between all affected groups and the decision processes are transparent if the final result is to bear a strong resemblance to the project as planned. A possible solution is developed in the case study by using elements of this alternative methodology, resulting in a proposal for an extra short runway at Heathrow.

This thesis details a simulation study of the domestic deplaning passenger and baggage subsystem at Vancouver International Airport The present and future baggage systems are described and modeled and the model is then validated. The capacity of the baggage claim area is estimated. The use of this simulation model as a tool for inexpensively investigating the effect of different flight schedules on queues in the baggage claim area is demonstrated. Cette thèse questionne, d’un point de vue compréhensif et critique, la notion de traces numériques à l’heure du Big Data et de la relation entre les notions de la surveillance et la confiance. Le « Big Data » fait référence à la production massive de données qui représentent une manne précieuse de bénéfices. En effet, la quantité massive de données produites dans le monde atteint des volumes si importants qu’il est indéniablement impossible de les analyser par l’humain sans l’aide d’outils technologiques et statistiques adéquats. Parmi les secteurs concernés par cette révolution technologique et sociétale, le secteur aéroportuaire est aujourd’hui confronté à une importante transformation, nourrie par l’explosion des données au sein de sa structure. Les données générées, collectées et stockées au cours du parcours du passager sont désormais massives et leur gestion est un important levier pour la sécurité, l’amélioration de services et le confort du passager. Pour autant, les avantages attendus n’en soulèvent pas moins une grande question : où vont ces données ? Difficile d’y répondre. Et tant qu’on ne sait pas, comment peut-on faire confiance ? Ces réflexions sont mises en examen à l’aéroport de Larnaca à Chypre. Les différents angles d’approche ainsi que la diversité des acteurs ont nécessité la constitution d’un corpus multidimensionnel, issu d’une méthodologie mixte, afin d’avoir une approche compréhensive du sujet. Ce corpus comprend à la fois des entretiens, des questionnaires et des récits de vie des passagers et des professionnels du terrain. L’analyse qualitative et quantitative qui a suivi était basée sur un cadre précédemment élaboré afin de croiser les représentations des acteurs à propos de la surveillance et la confiance et mettre en évidence les différentes visions inhérentes à cette question. / This research project questions, in a comprehensive and critical way, the presence of digital traces in the era of Big Data. This reflection opens up in the relation between Surveillance and Trust. In recent years, “Big Data” has massively and repeatedly been used in order to describe a new societal dynamic that would be characterized by the production of massive quantities of data. Furthermore, enormous potential benefits from using new statistical tools to analyze these data generated from connected objects and tools in more and more human actions. The airport sector is currently facing a major transformation, fueled by the explosion of data within its structure. The data generated during a passenger's journey are now extremely massive. There is no doubt that the management of this data is an important lever for the safety, the improvement of services and the comfort of the passenger. However, the expected benefits raise a great question: Where do these data go? We do not know. And as long as we do not know, how can we trust? These considerations are being examined at Larnaca airport in Cyprus. The different angles of approach as well as the diversity of the actors required the creation of a multidimensional corpus, resulting from a mixed methodology, in order to have a comprehensive approach to the subject. This corpus includes interviews, questionnaires and life stories of passengers and professionals. The qualitative and quantitative analysis that followed was based on a theoretical framework previously elaborated, in order to cross the representations of the actors concerning the surveillance and the trust and finally, highlight the different inherent visions to this issue.

The key factors of influencing airport operation contract out -- A case study of Chuhai airport

The airports in Taiwan already adapted the outsourcing or contract out concept on some part of operation, such as commercial facilities, clearing, and maintenance. However, the full airport operation is still under the CAA¡¦s control. The airport operation outsourcing will be influenced by the policy, regulations, economics, social, culture of the country, also the airport scare and operation characteristic, therefore, it is difficult to define one model to meet all airport demands. This study is using Chuhai airport operation outsourcing as a case study, to induct the key factors from different faces those are considered to influence the outsourcing project. If the airport operation in Taiwan is planned to adapt outsourcing in the future, this study may provide some reference. The conclusion of this study is the influence key factors of airport operation outsourcing should consider from three faces, the external environment, the client side and contractor side. 1.The external environment: the policy (including law and regulation) and economy condition are the most important factors. 2.The client side: The law and regulation (the authorize and restriction); the organization (the strategic planning and preparation working); the management (clear object, audit mechanisms and performance evaluation). 3.The contractor side: The law and regulation (the restriction, contract reasonable, rights and responsibilities); the economic factor (profit and company strategy); the organization (the experience and capability); the management (the authority, audit mechanisms and performance evaluation).

The aim of this thesis is to improve functionality and revive the sports airport Medlánky in place of the existing airport. The proposal uses the existing sport airport complex. The concept was inspired by the shape and design of airplane wings. Therefore it is so uniquely connected to the dynamic appearance of the airport, the air traffic and thus forming a unified whole, which does not disturb the landscape. To improve the operation and upgrade the airport, it was necessary to analyze and find trouble spots first, to solve them and possibly supplement by operating buildings, or change their form and function. For this reason, the main and secondary routes were established as well as private and public zones and last but not least, parking and resting areas.

Intelligent optimisation system for airport operation : Hajj Terminal in Saudi Arabia

Airport operation level of service (LOS) and performance management are among the major concerns by any airport authority. Two aspects considered in that kind of measurement: passengers prospective and operators prospective. This thesis tries to combine both in its produced optimisation system. This study was carried out in the Hajj terminal of the King Abdul-Aziz international airport and classified the processing time among the most important measures affecting the users’ observation of the level of service. Produced survey has helped to generate performance measure upon passengers prospective. On the other hand a simulation model of the process flow is utilised to formulate driven data model of the terminal process flow operations. The model built on Arena software and correlation study is made from the multiple “what if” scenarios of the model. Then a linear regression is used to generate a model for each variable. Levenberg–Marquardt (LM) algorithm is used after to carry out better regression model then Neuro-Fuzzy (NF) model found to be more efficient as it is picked and used to generate a best observed prediction. The system is optimised through the generated Neuro-Fuzzy (NF) logic model using both Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) and Genetic Algorithm (GA). A validation in addition to the testing made in the optimisation system. Analysis shows a great deal of improvement in predictions using fuzzy logic instead of linear regression for all dependent variables. PSO and GA optimisations are carried out and compared to the actual results gathered from the Arena simulation report.
