Conversion in a World of Violence: James Alison, Thomas Merton, and the Stories That Change Us

Karanovich, R. Zachary January 2023 (has links)
Thesis advisor: Brian Robinette / While violence manifests in many forms, two instantiations of violence are particularly prominent in the U.S. and growing: racial resentment and polarization, both political and ecclesial. Violence emerges from the false and malforming narratives that contribute to our identities and worldviews. Insofar as these narratives contribute to the ongoing malformation of our identities and worldviews, they contribute to a bias in need of conversion; that is, violence as the result of false narratives is in need of a conversion understood as a revision of those formative narratives. In my dissertation, I draw on the work of James Alison and Thomas Merton to offer a spirituality and ecclesiology of humble discovery and prophetic accompaniment that facilitate an openness to a holistic conversion at the personal, communal, and political levels that can counter this violent bias in the transformation of our formative narratives. In chapter one, I evaluate the role narratives play in human identity and worldview formation as well as the possibility for violence to emerge from false and malforming narratives. I focus especially on racial resentment and polarization in the political and ecclesial spheres as instantiations of violence that are uniquely pervasive and growing in the United States. I posit that these false narratives are a bias in need of conversion, and I consider conversion as a transformation of those formative narratives. Chapter two takes up the work of James Alison who, relying on the mimetic theory advanced by René Girard, offers a communal anthropology that reveals original sin to be our participation in a system of mimetic rivalry, scapegoating and exclusionary violence, and death. The experience of the resurrection reveals both our participation in this system and that God has nothing to do with this violence and death. Alison directs us to ecclesial participation in the liturgy, wherein we experience the risen Jesus, as a communal process of conversion in which we relax into being recreated into who God intends for us to be and whose desires are realigned toward God’s. In chapter three, I turn to the complementary, though distinct, work of Thomas Merton. Merton offers a process of personal conversion rooted in a practice of contemplative spirituality. This process initiates in response to the realization of our participation in “mass society,” which uncritically accepts technological progress to the point of rendering us “moral infants” and atomized cogs in the machine of that same progress. This spirituality practice wrests our egos from this false logic and reveals our interconnectedness to and responsibility for our neighbor. In chapter four, I synthesize the thought of Alison and Merton and offer a framework for an ecclesiology and a spirituality of humble discovery and prophetic accompaniment that work to open us to God’s grace and the resulting conversion. I apply this framework to rural, working-class, and White communities—focusing especially on my own hometown—offering a reflection on how the application of these might facilitate a conversion within these communities and counter the racial resentment and polarization that uniquely impacts these communities. / Thesis (PhD) — Boston College, 2023. / Submitted to: Boston College. Three suites: a celebration of klezmer

Unknown Date (has links)
Three original suites, composed during 2008-2009, are presented and discussed with respect to form, style, and compositional techniques. The subjects are Suite No. 1 (clarinet and piano), Suite No. 2: For Paul, A Master of Music (clarinet, piano, double bass and drums), and Suite No. 3: L'Chaim (two clarinets, flugelhorn, French horn, bandoneon, piano, violin, and cello). Common to all three pieces is the inspiration of klezmer, a Jewish music genre that, during its reemergence over the past thirty-five years, has welcomed the influence of other musical styles. In keeping with the eclectic nature of klezmer, each suite builds upon the previous one with regard to instrumentation, style and technique, and embraces additional genres (jazz and tango). Brief reviews regarding the history and musical characteristics (including modes, ornamentation and improvisation, song types and instrumentation) for all the included genres are also presented for the benefit of compositional context. / by Alison Weiner. / Thesis (M.A.)--Florida Atlantic University, 2010. / Includes bibliography. / Electronic reproduction. William Pulteney Alison : activist philanthropist and pioneer of social medicine

Martin, Sheonagh M. K. January 1997 (has links)
The thesis looks in detail at three inter-related aspects of Alison's life. It examines, firstly, his role in the development of Edinburgh's rudimentary 'health' network, achieved through the expansion of the existing medical charity structure and the introduction of a more interventionist and coordinated approach to the city's health problems. It traces, secondly, the development of Alison's social thought - in 1820 he believed that medical and practical relief for the poor could and should be supplied through the voluntary charities and only when that proved unsatisfactory through the poor law, whereas by 1840 he argued that public health should be the responsibility of government and that the excessive increase in poverty and disease in Scotland, which he believed had occurred, was proof that the charitable and legal relief provided was inadequate. Finally, Alison's influence on the passage of Scottish poor law and public health legislation in the 1840s and 1850s is examined - the latter involving an assessment of how far he was responsible for the legislative delay. The poor law debate, 1840-1845, which reveals the forces shaping the reform and the prevailing attitudes to poverty, highlights the challenge which Alison's opinions represented and the resulting turmoil in Scottish social thinking, while his reasons for opposing health legislation, which established London control are of great importance. They reveal differences in the rationale behind, and way in which, the concept of public health was developed in Scotland and England. Unlike Chadwick and his supporters, Alison emphasised poverty amelioration and sanitary reform. Part of the explanation for the differing opinions lay in their respective miasmatic and contagionist theories for fever generation, but it also reflects, perhaps more significantly, the impact of European medical police ideas on Scottish medical opinion - Alison's view of public health closely resembled that of the French hygienists.

Alison e Peter Smithson : uma arquitetura da realidade

Davi, Laura Mardini January 2009 (has links)
This research consists of the study of council housing projects made by Alison and Peter Smithson, from1950 to 1972. Two projects were analysed: the project for Golden Lane, developed for a competition in 1951,and Robin Hood Gardens, whose construction was finished in 1972.The procedures adopted to elaborate this investigation were: the study of the architects' written production, extensive and significant to the overall understanding of their projects and the re-design of the projects, including the building of computer-generated scale models of the buildings, which allowed a systematic analysis of each of these two projects, thus bringing a good perception of the Smithson's work and their relation to the post-war context.

A performance autobiográfica nos quadrinhos : um estudo de Alison Bechdel / The autobiographical performance in comics

Zouvi, Aline de Alvarenga, 1990- 05 August 2015 (has links)
Orientador: Fabio Akcelrud Durão / Dissertação (mestrado) - Universidade Estadual de Campinas, Instituto de Estudos da Linguagem / Made available in DSpace on 2018-08-27T09:31:29Z (GMT). No. of bitstreams: 1 Zouvi_AlinedeAlvarenga_M.pdf: 20010510 bytes, checksum: 7961a9cb7fab81dcec6c56a743811134 (MD5) Previous issue date: 2015 / Resumo: Este trabalho tem como objetivo a análise da obra autobiográfica da cartunista estadunidense Alison Bechdel publicada no formato livro, composta, até o momento, por duas histórias em quadrinhos: Fun Home ¿ A Family Tragicomic (2006) e Are you my mother? ¿ A Comic Drama (2012). The aim of this work is the analysis of the autobiographical work of American cartoonist Alison Bechdel, published in book form, composed, so far, of two comics: Fun Home ¿ A Family Tragicomic (2006) and Are you my mother? ¿ A Comic Drama (2012). Apart from the study of autobiographical works in comics and the implications of this specific media and genre combination, we aim to observe how Bechdel structures her narratives through intertextuality with other productions, such as literary, psychoanalytic, or imagery. Our attention will be focused on the use that Bechdel makes of such works and what is the connection between the building of parallels with the author's autobiographical production in which she articulates the works and biographies (of the characters related to her history and life experience) at various levels, as well as the way the author critically thinks, while constructing her autobiographies, of the act of autobiography itself / Mestrado / Teoria e Critica Literaria / Mestra em Teoria e História Literária

Confronting The Museum: The Function Of Parody In The Work Of Illya Kabakov and Marcel Broodthaers.

Kearney, Alison 02 November 2006 (has links)
MASTERS FACULTY OF HUMANITIES SCHOOL OF ARTS STUDENT NO: 9910933F / This study investigates the ways in which museums are understood as texts, and how artists challenge those assumptions within their work. The extent to which parody, a central tenet of post- modern art, can be used as an effective means to challenge the hegemony of the art museum, is investigated through an analyses of artworks by Illya Kabakov and Marcel Broodthaers. The first part of the study interrogates the hegemonic function of museums, through a discussion of the central tenets of museological discourse, in order to contextualise the discussion of the artworks in question. The second part of this study includes an analysis of specific artworks by Illya Kabakov and Marcel Broodthaers, detailing the ways in which these artists parody aspects of museum practice. The concluding chapter interrogates my own artistic production in relation to this research.
