La présente thèse, qui porte sur le Quatrième Abécédaire spirituel ou Loi d’amour du Franciscain andalou Francisco de Osuna, comporte deux volets : une étude de l’œuvre et des enjeux doctrinaux qui la traversent, accompagnée d’une édition annotée du texte à partir de la princeps de 1530. Il s’agit d’un traité de spiritualité sur l’amour divin et l’amour humain, plus théologique que mystique, rédigé en castillan afin de toucher un lectorat très large, et plus particulièrement destiné aux prédicateurs dans une perspective de propagande doctrinale. L’étude replace l’œuvre dans son contexte immédiat d’écriture ―la Castille des années 1525-1530― et montre dans quelle mesure elle vient se positionner dans la polémique spirituelle autour de la doctrine du pur amour, en plein procès contre les alumbrados de Tolède. Francisco de Osuna s’emploie à réfuter ou à corriger les excès des théories spirituelles relatives à l’amour de Dieu élaborées par les dejados ―qui sont omniprésents dans la Loi d’amour sous forme d’allusions plus ou moins implicites―, ainsi qu’à défendre les principes mystiques de sa propre doctrine spirituelle : le recueillement. L’édition entend quant à elle mettre à la portée du lecteur du XXIe siècle un texte riche et peu connu, grâce à une transcription modernisante et un appareil de notes fourni (variantes, difficultés textuelles et lexicales, sources bibliques, patristiques et philosophiques, notions théologiques et spirituelles, références historiques et culturelles, etc.). / This dissertation on the Fourth Spiritual Alphabet (aka Law of Love) by the Andalusian Franciscan brother Francisco de Osuna consists of two parts. The analysis of the book and of the doctrinal issues it raises is followed by an annotated edition of the text, starting at the princeps of 1530. This spirituality treatise about divine love and human love is theological rather than mystical. It was written in Castilian in order to reach a public as large as possible, and more specifically intended for preachers for doctrinal propaganda purposes. The analysis sets the book back in the immediate context of its writing – Castilla in the second half of the 1520’s – and shows how this work took a stance in the spiritual debate on the pure love doctrine marked by the alumbrados trial in Toledo. We show how Francisco de Osuna strives to reject or correct the excesses of the spiritual theories on divine love designed by the dejados, who are ubiquitous in the Law of Love through more or less implicit allusions, and how he defends the mystical principles of his own spiritual doctrine: the recogimiento (“recollection”). The annotated edition aims at making this rich but relatively unknown text accessible to 21st century readers through a modernizing translation and an exhaustive critical apparatus (variants, textual and lexical difficulties, biblical, philosophical and patristical sources, theological and spiritual concepts, historical and cultural references, etc.).
