The purpose of this study was to trace the historical development of the American University of Beirut and its educational contributions in Lebanon and the Middle East from 1920 to 1967. Through their activities in the Levant in the early nineteenth century, the American missionaries virtually laid the foundations of the Syrian Protestant College, later known as the American University of Beirut. Though religion was the cornerstone in the founding of the University, under the pressure of the local environment, its secular character was to be substituted for the religious one. The establishment of the University in 1866 marked the beginning of the system of higher education in the Arab world. As the first established institution of higher learning, the University played a significant role in raising the level of literacy throughout the region. Despite the difficult times that the University faced throughout its history, it survived and continued its dedicated mission to serve the people of Lebanon and the entire area. For the University, the first 50 years under Ottoman rule was a period of surviving and maintaining its existence. With the freedom it came to enjoy during the French Mandate and later during independence, the University moved into a period of advancing and expanding. By the 1960s the University had become a prestigious institution and captured the support of most people and governments in the area. The study's six chapters describe the historical setting of Lebanon and the origins of its religious groups, the historical background of the American University of Beirut, the educational activities of the University during the French Mandate, and its educational activities under independent Lebanon. The thesis showed that the University had a significant role in the education of the Lebanese and the peoples of the area, and that it has significantly contributed to the development of Lebanon and the Middle East.

Par ce travail, on se propose de savoir, dans un premier temps, si la Qualité totale, en tant que concept corporatif, est applicable à l'«entreprise» universitaire qui possède des logiques et des dynamiques sociales particulières et si elle tient compte de la complexité et de la spécificité des rapports sociaux intra-universitaires pour une implantation efficace de son dispositif. La question est aussi de savoir s'il existe des référentiels normatifs, autres que l'ISO 9001 :2000 sur l'éducation, spécifiquement conçus pour l'enseignement supérieur et, dans l'affirmative, quelles sont les universités libanaises pionnières dans l'implantation d'un système Qualité standardisé, pour quels motifs celles-ci se sont attelées à un tel projet et quelles sortes d'avantages ont-elles tiré du processus d'implantation. Dans un deuxième temps, on se proposera de savoir si l'implantation de standards tels que les «Services aux étudiants» et «Intégrité» ont contribué à améliorer les conditions d'études et la qualité de vie universitaire en général, à favoriser le climat d'entente entre les étudiants et entre ceux-ci et l'institution ainsi que l'esprit civique et démocratique dans la vie au campus, partant la vie civile; si la Qualité totale a pu transmettre ses valeurs et infléchir positivement les modes de penser, de sentir et d'agir sans rencontrer de résistances aux changements institutionnels opérés par son implantation. Au vu des troubles enregistrés sur certains campus, dont l'institution est pourtant engagée dans une démarche Qualité, on se demandera pourquoi celle-ci n'est pas parvenue à prévenir ou résoudre ces troubles, ce qu'il a manqué au programme pour inoculer son «Esprit Qualité» dans les esprits au campus, et quelle approche sociologique il convient de proposer pour encadrer la démarche Qualité, forcer les résistances aux changements institutionnels et résoudre les problèmes d'intolérance, voire de violence à l'université. ______________________________________________________________________________

abstract: To sustain world preeminence, 21st century university and college leaders in the United States are redesigning their institutions organizationally and culturally to align with the direction of local and global societies and markets. The New American University enterprise model at Arizona State University has become one of the leading organization and cultural redesigns in United States higher education since its inception in 2002. Yet, sustaining a 21st century model such as this one means every individual in the college or university must understand his or her specific role to further progress the new model forward. Therefore, to advance and sustain a 21st century higher education redesign model at a U.S. college or university, it becomes imperative that every master-level professional who works in the academic/student services field at the institution understand his or her specific role in helping to further progress the new model forward. To this end, there is a need to change the way graduate students in higher education/student affairs masters programs are educated to work in the 21st century institution. This change can prepare new professionals to understand these enterprise models and how to integrate them into their practice in order to meet the needs of the institution, local and global societies and markets. The purpose of this action research study is to highlight one program, the ASU M.Ed. Higher and Postsecondary program, and show how graduates from 2007 - 2011 understand New American University concepts and integrate them into professional practice within higher education. This dissertation explores the presence of Project Management (PM) at 162 American Universities via data gathered from their publicly accessible websites. Motivated to expand the inventory of American university PM data to the international literature, I experimented with the potential to correlate statistically PM data items to organizational models and the effectiveness of university management. Using Confirmatory and Exploratory Factor Analysis (CFA and EFA) statistical methods, I investigated two University Project Management Presence Models [U(PM)2] and their relationships to the interdisciplinary research framework. Drawing from Project Management, Policy Analysis Research, Organizational Theories, and American Higher Education Histories, I also included qualitative techniques in the research design. I conclude that this study facilitates the analysis of universities as complex organizations through a Higher Education administrator's point of view. Not only do the findings suggest a correlation of PM data to predict a university's graduation rate, but also--more foundationally--the study confirms that Project Management does exist at American universities, even if that expertise does not yet exist.
