In this context, information and digital technologies (ICT) have been causing profound transformation in Education: in the teaching goals and in the educational institutions themselves, in the educational policies, in teachers’ continuing professional development, in the active methodologies developed in the classroom, in the materials offered to learners, in the curricula definition, as well as in the mobilization of both the family and the community regarding the education of their members. Nevertheless, even though schools allow for the use of digital resources, it is not unusual that teachers and the institution itself face difficulties in using them to enhance teaching processes. Similarly, students face difficulties in directing all the skills they have in technology to the learning activities. This study aims to investigate how the multimedia resources made available through the didactic materials adopted by Colégio Notre Dame, source of investigation of this research, are being used by teachers and what their perceptions about the pedagogic potentialities are in this use. In order to meet this purpose, this study was developed by the principles of qualitative research, via case study, since the interest is to investigate a pragmatic problem that is part of the daily routine of an educational institution. Two instruments for data collection have been adopted: one questionnaire that indicates teachers who are users of technological resources and tools in the classroom, and one semi-structured interview with these subjects, departing from their testimonials to extract specific data that could answer the questions under investigation. The theoretical references adopted are based on the studies by Richard Mayer, who proposes a particular theory about learning through multimedia resources as well as by other specialists who dedicate themselves to answer questions related to the topic / No século XXI, a sociedade é caracterizada pela expansão desenfreada de informações de fácil acesso, exigindo de todos que dela participam uma atitude constante de aquisição de conhecimentos e aprendizagem. Neste contexto, as Tecnologias Digitais da Informação e Comunicação (TDIC) vem ocasionando profundas transformações na Educação: nos objetivos de ensino e nas próprias instituições escolares, nas políticas educacionais, na formação continuada dos docentes, nas metodologias ativas desenvolvidas em sala de aula, nos materiais apresentados aos alunos, na definição do currículo, bem como na mobilização da família e da comunidade no que se refere à educação de seus pares. Porém, por mais que a escola viabilize recursos digitais, muitas vezes os professores e a própria instituição apresentam dificuldades em usá-los na potencialização das situações de ensino, bem como os alunos apresentam dificuldades em direcionar todo o conhecimento que possuem em tecnologia para as situações de aprendizagem. O objetivo deste trabalho é investigar com que intuito os recursos multimídias disponibilizados pelo material didático adotado pelo Colégio Notre Dame, fonte de investigação dessa pesquisa, estão sendo utilizados pelos professores e quais são suas percepções sobre as potencialidades pedagógicas dessa prática. Para tanto, o estudo é desenvolvido pelos princípios da pesquisa qualitativa, via estudo de caso, uma vez que o interesse se pauta em investigar um problema prático, que faz parte do cotidiano de uma instituição de ensino. Para tal, foram adotados dois instrumentos para a coleta de dados: um questionário que indicaria professores usuários de recursos e ferramentas tecnológicas em sala de aula e uma entrevista semiestruturada com esses sujeitos, buscando, a partir de suas narrativas, extrair unidades de significados que pudessem responder as questões de investigação. O referencial teórico adotado está ancorado nos estudos de Richard Mayer, que propõe uma teoria específica sobre a aprendizagem por meio de recursos multimídias, bem como em outros especialistas que se dedicam a responder questões relacionadas ao tema

The Impact of Computer Mediated Communication Systems Monitoring on Organizational Communications Content

Employer monitoring of communications is prevalent and on the rise due in part to the Sarbanes-Oxley Act, the Health Insurance Privacy Protection Act, and other legislation in the U.S. and other countries. However, the critical effect of this new activity on what is communicated in companies has not been assessed. This dissertation examines the impacts of computer mediated communication systems monitoring on neutral, incriminating and exculpatory content, as well as the overall volume of communications issued on monitored and non-monitored computer mediated communication systems. Incriminating communication is cataloged in a hazard communications taxonomy for this investigation. A controlled laboratory experiment has subjects participate in an instant messaging discussion on a topic for which they are likely to be aware of information that is incriminating to their organization, or its members, or both. Consistent with self awareness theory, monitored subjects engage in significantly less overall and neutral communication. They volunteer fewer high intensity hazard communications, but are less likely to curtail low intensity hazard communications. They issue denials about more incriminating topics. Contributions to research include theory development, especially in the area of standard selection; application of self-awareness theory to the new domain of computer mediated communications monitoring; a research framework; a taxonomy and coding scheme for the new hazard communications constructs; and a relative standards influence instrument and methodology for use in studying competing standards. Implications for corporate monitoring and communications policies are discussed, and a research agenda is outlined.

<p>Purpose/aim: The purpose is to get increased knowledge about how the communication had developed from the first contact online to the first meeting in real life and even after when it had turned into a real relationship. I also wanted to know why the eight women I interviewed experienced that the Internet is a good venue to meet and develop a real relationship at and if there existed any differences between those four women who were a bit older and those four women who were young.</p><p>Material/method: When the purpose with this survey stood clear I decided to use interviews as the method to find out more about my subject. I decided to do eight interviews and I contacted eight women who all found their partners online that were willing to help me and answer my interview questions. I did six of the total eight interviews through MSN Messenger and the other two through the telephone.</p><p>Main results: I found out that three of the older women had used e-mail and telephone and sometimes SMS communication to find out more about their soon to be partner and after that decided to meet the other person in real life. One of the older women and all four of the younger ones had used a Community and Instant Messenger to communicate with their soon to be partner, they also used the telephone and SMS to communicate with each other but Instant Messenger was the medium that dominated in their wish to communicate. Those instant messenger communications were also a difference that I came to see between how the younger and older women communicated and the fact that three of the older women told me that they had used the Internet to search for a partner while one of the older women and all of the younger ones told me they didn’t search for anyone at all it just happened that they found someone and came to like that person.Keywords: Internet dating, instant messaging, Community, computer mediated communication, telephone communication, face to face communication.</p>

This thesis explores young people's interaction with different individuals through a variety of media. Three girls and three boys aged 16–18, from an urban school, a rural school and a suburban school, were each observed for a week, at school, at home and during leisure activities. The data analysed consist of field notes, video and audio recordings, and texts written by the participants. The aim of the study is to investigate how young people’s use of language varies in relation to different contexts. Questions are asked about what activities they participate in, what media they use and how they use them, and how they express themselves orally and in writing in different contexts and through different media. The study is based in sociolinguistic theory and activity type theory. Data were collected using ethnographical methods, and analytical tools were drawn from a broadly defined field of discourse analysis. The investigation sheds light on the relationship between what young people are doing socially in any given situation and how they interact. Variation in linguistic styles is made visible by a study of the same individuals involved in different communicative activities. Young people are shown to be a heterogeneous group who engage in different sets of activities. The study questions prevailing definitions and categorisations of adolescents’ linguistic styles and use of electronic media. The outcome is a complex description of everyday interaction, which is found to be shaped by the frames for communicative activities, the technical characteristics of the media employed, and individual factors. In conversational turns, Internet chat messages and text messages, young people select resources from their individual linguistic repertoires in order to achieve specific goals or construct particular roles through their interaction.

<p>Text communication is often perceived as lacking some components of communication that are essential in sustaining interaction or conversation. This interaction incoherency tends to make&nbsp / text communication plastic. It is traditionally devoid of intonation, pitch, gesture, facial expression and visual or auditory cues. Nevertheless, Instant Messaging (IM), a form of text communication is on the upward uptake both on PCs and on mobile handhelds. There is a need to rubberise this plastic text messaging to improve co-presence for text communications thereby improving&nbsp / synchronous textual discussion, especially on handheld devices. One element of interaction is gesture, seen as a natural way of conversing. Attaining some level of interaction naturalism&nbsp / requires improving synchronous communication spontaneity, partly achieved by enhancing input mechanisms. To enhance input mechanisms for interactive text-based chat on mobile devices,&nbsp / there is a need to facilitate gesture input. Enhancement is achievable in a number of ways, such as input mechanism redesigning and input offering adaptation. This thesis explores affective gesture mode on interface redesign as an input offering adaptation. This is done without a major physical reconstruction of handheld devices. This thesis presents a text only IM system built on&nbsp / Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) and SIP for Instant Messaging and Presence Leveraging Extensions (SIMPLE). It was developed with a novel user-defined hotkey implemented as a one-click context menu to &ldquo / fast-track&rdquo / text-gestures and emoticons. A hybrid quantitative and qualitative approach was taken to enable data triangulation. Results from experimental trials show that an&nbsp / Affective Gesture (AG)approach improved IM chat spontaneity/response. Feedback from the user trials affirms that AG hotkey improves chat responsiveness, thus enhancing chat spontaneity.</p>

The dream of weaving technology into our everyday fabric of life is recently being made possible by advances in ubiquitous computing and sensor technologies. Countless sensors of various sizes have made their way into everyday commercial applications. Many projects aim to explore new ways to utilize these new technologies to aid and interact with the general population. Context-aware systems use available context information to assist users automatically, without explicit user input. By inferring user intent and configuring the system proactively for each user, context-aware systems are an integral part of achieving user-friendly ubiquitous computing environments. <br /><br /> A common issue with building a distributed context-aware system is the need to develop a supporting infrastructure providing features such as storage, distributed messaging, and security, before the real work on processing context information can be done. This thesis proposes a coordination framework that provides an effective common foundation for context-aware systems. The separation between the context-processing logic component and the underlying supporting foundation allows researchers to focus their energy at the context-processing part of the system, instead of spending their time re-inventing the supporting infrastructure. <br /><br /> As part of an ongoing project, Impress, the framework uses the open standard, Jabber, as its communication protocol. The Publish-Subscribe (pubsub) extension to Jabber provides interesting features that match those needed by a context-aware system. The main contribution of this thesis is the design and implementation of a coordination framework, called the Impress Context Store, that provides an effective common foundation for context-aware systems. The separation between the context-processing logic and the underlying supporting foundation allows researchers to focus their energy at the context-processing part of the system, instead of spending their time re-inventing the supporting infrastructure.

We present a distributed data structure, which we call "RootChord". To our knowledge, this is the first distributed hash table which is able to adapt to changes in the size of the network and answer lookup queries within a guaranteed two hops while maintaining a routing table of size Theta(sqrt(N)). We provide pseudocode and analysis for all aspects of the protocol including routing, joining, maintaining, and departing the network. In addition we discuss the practical implementation issues of parallelization, data replication, remote procedure calls, dead node discovery, and network convergence.
