Yes / Given the potential benefits such as time and location-based advertisements, the scope of interactivity and customisation through one-to-one target marketing, SMS-based (Short Messaging Service) advertisement, is now being considered as an important alternative marketing channel. This has raised a real challenge for marketers to harness the potential of this alternative channel by overcoming several limiting issues such as security, privacy, authenticity, and irritation of unknown senders. The main objective of this study is to identify and review relevant research issues faced by wireless marketing (particularly via SMS-based advertisement) as an aide to identify potential research gaps and for developing future guiding principles. The review and analysis of literature suggest that there is scope of undertaking further research on issues related to different cultures reflecting ubiquitous traits of mobile phone, SMS advertisement, market segmentation, location and time sensitive delivery, content and context of advertisement, language and appropriate delivery.

This study set out to investigate the possible effects of text messaging language on the written school work (learners' ability to properly compose and formulate) of grade 11 English first additional language learners (EFAL) at a public high school in Soshanguve, Pretoria. To this end, the two objectives of the study were to: identify if there were any instances or uses of text messaging in the written school work of grade 11 English first additional language learners at a public school in Pretoria; and establish the possible effects (positive or negative) of text messaging on grade 11 English first additional language learners' written school work.

Thesis (MBA (Business Management))--University of Stellenbosch, 2010. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: The mobile phone has not only changed the way the world works today, but also changed the direction the world is moving toward. The mobile phone changed the face of communication and enabled more people to reach more other people than ever before.
The big four banks in South Africa represent 83.5 per cent of the total asset value of all banks in South Africa. Traditionally, banking customers (or potential customers) could be reached through the current 2 786 branches, 19 451 ATMs and potentially 4.59 million internet users. There are 47.9 million mobile phone subscribers in South Africa – increasing the number of potential contact points by order of magnitude. The possibilities for banks utilising the mobile phone are endless, however online banking and offering banking services through a mobile phone is increasingly more subject to fraud attacks. Online banking and credit card fraud is still on the increase.
Today, SMS is used to alert customer of movements on their bank account. This keeps the customer informed and enables them to notify their banks and prevent subsequent fraudulent transactions.
SMS can be sent from one mobile phone to another (P2P) or from a computer system to a mobile phone (A2P). In 2007, 2 trillion SMS's were sent worldwide and was responsible for 75 to 80 per cent of all mobile phone revenues.
South Africa sent 34 billion A2P SMS in 2009 of which 29 per cent were sent as transactional SMS by the top three banks in South Africa. SMS-based transactional alerts are SMS sent each time a change occurs in a bank account, for example, when your credit card is used then you will get an SMS on your mobile phone. Each bank makes different functionalities available. Absa reported 2 million customers receiving SMS alerts in 2008. FNB reported 67 million transactional SMS per month in 2009. The core advantages for using transactional SMS are the cost, reliability and ubiquity.
Research was conducted among five of the six largest banks. Data revealed that banks send between 16 million and 69.4 million SMS per month and have approximately between 4.5 and 5.1 million customers using this service.
The impact was tested through personal interviews. The two common factors were fraud reduction and customer retention. The two key challenges the banks identified are:
i) Capacity/throughput with the mobile network operators; and
ii) Getting internal systems and processes defined and working together for the alerts.
The advantages identified are competitive positioning, customer interaction, empowerment of people and revenue.
Key findings of the research were: SMS-based transactional alerts offer strategic importance; Any system is as good as it is being utilised; Security controls are extremely complex; SMS capacity is a common challenge and big risk; Internal processes cause the most complexity; Return on investment is not adequately measured; Transactional alerts is a potential revenue stream; There is no interaction between the bank and the customer; SMS in South Africa create high dependencies; SMS-based transactional alerts are successful.

IoT environments are characterized by a high degree of heterogeneity of devices and network protocols. However, many challenging social and technological issues still need to be addressed, including the interoperability of devices, autonomous systems, privacy and security issues, which could have a significant impact on many aspects of everyday life of potential end user. To deal with these issues some type of middleware layer or frameworks to show fundamental enforce the seamless integration of devices and functionality within the same network information, providing security and reliability. Therefore, the objective of this work is to design and implement a secure and reliable framework in this scenario using the XMPP protocol (eXtensible Messaging and Presence Protocol). Based on the model publish / subscribe, the proposed framework has reliability mechanism for real-time communication, security features provided by the XMPP based on TLS and SASL authentication. Based on case studies demonstrate the framework’s ability reliability and the results demonstrate the feasibility of the model. / A Internet das Coisas (IoT) é um paradigma no qual objetos inteligentes colaboram de forma ativa com outros objetos físicos e virtuais disponíveis na Internet. Ambientes de IoT são caracterizados por um alto grau de heterogeneidade de dispositivos e protocolos de rede. Entretanto, muitas questões tecnológicas desafiadoras e sociais ainda precisam ser abordadas, incluindo a interoperabilidade de dispositivos, autonomia de sistemas, privacidade e questões de segurança, o quê poderia ter um impacto significativo em vários aspectos da vida cotidiana do usuário potencial final. Para lidar com essas questões algum tipo de camada de middleware ou frameworks se mostram fundamentais para fazer cumprir a integração de dispositivos e funcionalidades dentro da mesma rede de informação, provendo segurança e confiabilidade. Desta forma, o objetivo deste trabalho é projetar e implementar um Framework seguro e confiável neste cenário usando o protocolo XMPP (eXtensible Messaging and Presence Protocol). Baseado no modelo publish/subscribe, o framework proposto possui mecanismo de confiabilidade na comunicação em tempo real, recursos de segurança fornecidos pelo XMPP baseado no protocolo Transport Layer Security (TLS) e autenticação Simple Authentication and Security Layer (SASL). Com base nos estudos de caso, demonstramos a capacidade do framework na confiabilidade e os resultados obtidos demonstram a viabilidade do mesmo.

Mobile presentations with interactive chat for m-LearningWanyonyi, David Wafula January 2010 (has links)
Using presentations in an m-Learning environment enables delivery of rich content to a mobile phone learner. This study investigated how to prepare and stream presentations from a desktop computer to a mobile phone in near-realtime. It also addressed communication between users using interactive text chat in the same environment. Our analysis of text/podcast-based m-Learning applications revealed limited interactivity and lack of diversity in content streamed. To address this, we developed a mobile-based application that uses a task-timer model to synchronize with a server every n units of time to enable near-realtime streaming of presentation slides between mobile and desktop users. The application included text-based instant messenger. Laboratory experiments investigated the use OpenOffice and PowerPoint presentations and techniques used to convert these presentations into mobile phone compatible formats. Experiments were carried out with smart mobile phones running on a third generation cellular network. We employed transaction-logging techniques in addition to automated image analysis techniques to observe and record data. Analysis of the results revealed using presentations enabled more rich content than text-based models such as short message service-based frameworks and podcasts. Although m-Learning is not yet widely adopted, applications such as the one developed in the study offer high hopes for m-Learning because of the use of rich content and interactivity between users.

On-the-go text entry: evaluating and improving mobile text input on mini-qwerty keyboardsClawson, James 13 November 2012 (has links)
To date, hundreds of millions of mini-QWERTY keyboard equipped devices (miniaturized versions of a full desktop keyboard) have been sold. Accordingly, a large percentage of text messages originate from fixed-key, mini-QWERTY keyboard enabled mobile phones. Over a series of three longitudinal studies I quantify how quickly and accurately individuals can input text on mini-QWERTY keyboards. I evaluate performance in ideal laboratory conditions as well as in a variety of mobile contexts. My first study establishes baseline performance measures; my second study investigates the impact of limited visibility on text input performance; and my third study investigates the impact of mobility (sitting, standing, and walking) on text input performance. After approximately five hours of practice, participants achieved expertise typing almost 60 words per minute at almost 95% accuracy. Upon completion of these studies, I examine the types of errors that people make when typing on mini-QWERTY keyboards. Having discovered a common pattern in errors, I develop and refine an algorithm to automatically detect and correct errors in mini-QWERTY keyboard enabled text input. I both validate the algorithm through the analysis of pre-recorded typing data and then empirically evaluate the impacts of automatic error correction on live mini-QWERTY keyboard text input. Validating the algorithm over various datasets, I demonstrate the potential to correct approximately 25% of the total errors and correct up to 3% of the total keystrokes. Evaluating automatic error detection and correction on live typing results in successfully correcting 61% of the targeted errors committed by participants while increasing typing rates by almost two words per minute without introducing noticeable distraction.

Στην παρούσα διατριβή αντιμετωπίζονται προβλήματα που αφορούν στην διαλειτουργικότητα, στο επίπεδο της ‘επικοινωνίας δεδομένων’, κατά την επικοινωνία διαφορετικών ιατρικών πληροφοριακών συστημάτων – ΙΠΣ, τα οποία ανήκουν σε οργανισμούς παροχής ιατρικής φροντίδας, με τον σχεδιασμό και την υλοποίηση ενός Μοντέλου Αναφοράς Ανάπτυξης – ΜΑΑ.
Το ΜΑΑ προτείνει ένα πλαίσιο εργασίας για την ανάπτυξη Συστημάτων Διαχείρισης Μηνυμάτων – ΣΔΜ, ικανών να υποστηρίζουν την επικοινωνία διαφορετικών ΙΠΣ στο χώρο του Νοσοκομείου και περιγράφει: (α) την κοινή συντακτική δομή της πληροφορίας που ανταλλάσσεται, (β) τις κοινές κατατομές επικοινωνίας των οντοτήτων των ΙΠΣ, (γ) τη γενική αρχιτεκτονική του ενδιάμεσου συστήματος και (δ) ένα σύνολο διεργασιών και υπηρεσιών που υλοποιούν τη διαδικασία της μηνυματοδοσίας, αλλά και την επίβλεψη, τον έλεγχο και τη συντήρηση αυτής.
Επιπλέον, η παρούσα διατριβή εστιάζεται και στην υλοποίηση ενός ΣΔΜ, το οποίο εξυπηρετεί την επικοινωνία τριών βασικών ΙΠΣ του νοσοκομείου και είναι πλήρωως συμμορφωμένο με τις προτεινόμενες προδιαγραφές.

The RImM introduces a framework for the implementation of Message Handling Systems (MHSs) that supports the interoperable communication of different MISs inbound and outbound healthcare organizations and concerns: (a) the common syntactic structure of the transferred information, (b) the communication profiles of the MISs’ functional entities, (c) the general architecture of the intermediate system and (d) the set of interactions and service elements that implement the messaging service and the surveillance, control and maintenance of it.
Furthermore, the dissertation focuses on the implementation of such a MHS that supports the communication of three basic MISs.
The efficiency estimation of the proposed RImM were assessed applying three different methods: (a) the practical application of RImM and pilot operation of the implemented MHS, (b) the evaluation of ‘criteria of use’ and (c) the evaluation of ‘quality dimensions’ that concern reference modeling.

Cooperation using a robotic ad hoc network made from Bluetooth, JXTA, OSGi and other commercial off the shelf (COTS) productsRobinson, Kenneth Patrick January 2008 (has links)
Abstract - Mobile devices in the near future will need to collaborate to fulfill their function. Collaboration will be done by communication. We use a real world example of robotic soccer to come up with the necessary structures required for robotic communication. A review of related work is done and it is found no examples come close to providing a RANET. The robotic ad hoc network (RANET) we suggest uses existing structures pulled from the areas of wireless networks, peer to peer and software life-cycle management. Gaps are found in the existing structures so we describe how to extend some structures to satisfy the design. The RANET design supports robot cooperation by exchanging messages, discovering needed skills that other robots on the network may possess and the transfer of these skills. The network is built on top of a Bluetooth wireless network and uses JXTA to communicate and transfer skills. OSGi bundles form the skills that can be transferred. To test the nal design a reference implementation is done. Deficiencies in some third party software is found, specifically JXTA and JamVM and GNU Classpath. Lastly we look at how to fix the deciencies by porting the JXTA C implementation to the target robotic platform and potentially eliminating the TCP/IP layer, using UDP instead of TCP or using an adaptive TCP/IP stack. We also propose a future areas of investigation; how to seed the configuration for the Personal area network (PAN) Bluetooth protocol extension so a Bluetooth TCP/IP link is more quickly formed and using the STP to allow multi-hop messaging and transfer of skills.
