Offenders' perceptions of correctional education programmes in the correctional facilities of Tshwane

Johnson, Lineo Rose January 2015 (has links)
People-against-the-law is a societal phenomenon that will never disappear, even in societies where law and order are effectively enforced and practised. Political, economic and social conditions contribute to reasons why some people end up in correctional facilities. This study investigated the perceptions of offenders enrolled in education and training programmes offered by three correctional centres in Pretoria. The study adopted a pragmatic qualitative methodology in which the perceptions of the offenders in the educational programmes, and officials were investigated on whether the programmes addressed their personal development and that of their communities. Interviews and observations were used to collect data during tuition activities. Sixty-five (65) males, females, youth offenders, ex-convicts and officials from Correctional Services and non-governmental organisations participated in the study. Bronfenbrenner’s systems and Knowles’ andragogy were used as the theoretical base to understand the dynamics of adult learning in challenging prison environments. The study concluded that educational programmes offered by the Department of Correctional Services must be needs-based and align to employment opportunities, self-esteem and proper rehabilitation of individual offenders. Adult education programmes grounded on andragogic principles and practices should be revisited in correctional centres’ contexts. Thus educational programmes within Correctional Services should not only be mandatory, but teaching and learning activities should be conducted by qualified adult educators, and address the social needs of the adult offenders. / Educational Foundations / D. No. of bitstreams: 1 Sergio Ademar Fonseca.pdf: 2756550 bytes, checksum: 66734502220d0ef022d594bb83032ef9 (MD5) Previous issue date: 2009-08-07 / Fundo Mackenzie de Pesquisa / This dissertation had the objective of studying individual learning at organizations. The aim was to investigate how the learning processes of the shop floor activities are at the company where the research was carried out. The general objective was related to the comprehension of the learning process and the professional paths of a group of employees in their activity in the production area in a chemical industry. As specific objectives three targets were defined, fist of all was to describe the learning process adopted by the company from the time when the employee is hired until he is promoted to shift supervisor, then understand how the learning process occurs taken into consideration the employees point of view and finally to identify learning experiences lived on the shop floor that contributes to the development of the employee until he reaches the supervisory of shift level. To reach those objectives, the qualitative methodology was chosen due to the character of the research, which focused on the description and on the understanding of the learning and the development of a specific group of workers. To understand the learning process, documents related to the strategy adopted by the company were analyzed and interviews were conducted with the employees. Fifteen employees, members of a specific production area of the chemical company, were interviewed. The results of the research indicates that the learning process occurs due to the interactions of the learners with their individual characteristics, with propellers and generators of new learning, those together with the environment, the social worlds (STRAUSS, 2006; ELKJAER, 2004; 2008) and due to the participation of the workers on the processes and information and knowledge sharing in the production area. Authors that guided the research and analyses were: Malcom Knowles (1980) on relation to Andragogy, Knud Illeris (2004), regarding the adult learning and learning at work place, David Kolb (1984), related to experiential learning, Donald Alan Schön (2007) in relation to the knowing and reflection-in-action and the importance of the reflection the professional actions and Bente Elkjaer (2001; 2004) for the social theory of learning at organizations.

Besluitnemingsvaardighede: 'n Sielkundig-andragogiese perspektief

Strydom, Irene January 1995 (has links)

Dubovický, Miroslav January 2020 (has links)
This diploma thesis focuses on topic of educational needs of hospital and faculty of medicine employees, concretely doctors performing medical and pedagogical services. The theoretical part deals with the issue of employee management and development and with legislative confirmation of doctors need to constantly educate themselves. Lifelong learning, by extension, andragogy, is a tool for more active using of innovative methods and instruments for developing digital competences. Economical, sociological and sociopolitical analysis reflect educational needs analysis and emphasize the need for lifelong learning without regard for subjective or objective typological dimension. The major goal of this thesis is to analyze current condition of doctor's educational needs who perform medical and pedagogical services considering continual digitization development. I chose qualitative research investigation, two methods of questioning to gain required data. The analysis of doctor's educational needs in university hospital proved that current industrial revolution is professionally included not only by reason of subjective dimension of needs but also because of protecting themselves and their employers at particular performances.

The challenges of implementing and sustaining an adult and vocational education curriculum on an isolated island

Bermant, David 25 April 2012 (has links)
The island of Cascara is a dependent overseas territory of a European metropole. Access to the island is currently only by sea though there are plans to construct an airport. To prepare the island for the economic-related activities that will arise from air access, an Adult and Vocational Education Strategy was developed. This Strategy paved the way for the establishment of the island’s Adult and Vocational Education Service and informed the contents of the curriculum it provided. The purpose of this study was to investigate the challenges associated with implementing and sustaining the curriculum on this isolated island. In order to do this, the study examined the curriculum on offer; its current state of implementation and its associated challenges within the Adult and Vocational Education Service; it also investigated the extent to which the current curriculum met the needs of the island by aiding workforce development to support economic growth; and finally, it explored the challenges relating to the sustainability of the Adult and Vocational Education Service in providing a relevant vocational curriculum. A qualitative research approach was adopted using case study methodology. The purposive research sample comprised stakeholders across the public and private sectors at various levels. Qualitative research elicitation instruments were employed to gather data. These included questionnaires, unstructured, semi-structured and focus group interviews. In addition to these instruments, various official documents were analysed and the island’s local print and audio media were used to gather data. The research findings indicated that there needs to be more integration of resources (human, physical and financial) in the provision of adult and vocational learning. The data also showed that the integration of available resources has the potential to aid in more sustainable and meaningful learning that will benefit both the individuals and the economy. The data further suggested that a collaborative approach should aid in stabilising and expanding the provision of adult learning on the island. The need to improve the provision of distance learning opportunities with more internationally accredited courses being offered locally; the need for quality in the provision of learning to be formalised; and the need for the curriculum and staffing structures of the Adult and Vocational Education Service to be reconsidered were also highlighted. The research findings have already begun to serve as the basis for addressing the priorities of the Adult and Vocational Education Service on the island. By informing future learning policy and the contents of the curriculum on offer, the research findings could also potentially benefit the provision of adult and vocational education on other islands, small states and rural communities with limited human and financial resources. / Thesis (PhD)--University of Pretoria, 2012. / Education Management and Policy Studies / Unrestricted

Perceptions of Occupationally Trained Technical College Faculty on their Preparedness to Teach and on the Need for Professional Development: A Phenomenological Study

Hudson, Brandon 01 August 2021 (has links)
This qualitative, phenomenological study examines the perceptions of occupationally trained Tennessee technical college faculty on their preparedness to teach after being hired directly from industry and on the need for professional development and training on instructional and classroom strategies. Twelve semi-structured interviews were conducted by Zoom with instructors from three technical college program areas, Industrial Maintenance, Machine Tool Technology, and Welding. Participants represented institutions from each grand division of Tennessee, West, Middle, and East, plus Upper East. As a result of the data analysis, common themes, including a “here are your keys” approach to instructor induction, a reliance on other instructors for training, and the importance of timing when offering professional development and training to technical college instructors, were identified. The findings of this study exposed the perceived benefit and desire for professional development and the lack of formal training offered to occupationally trained technical college instructors. Finally, the findings from this study could be used to inform the development of professional development offerings offered by technical college administrators in Tennessee and the Tennessee Board of Regents.

Zjišťování a hodnocení kvality, efektivity a dopadů dalšího vzdělávání / Looking into and Evaluation Quality, Efficiency and Effects of Further Education

Žufanová, Hana January 2012 (has links)
Looking into and Evaluation Quallity, Efficiency and Effects of Further Education A thesis centers upon description and comparison of methods that gain a feedback in the field of the quality of further education. It considers both institutions providing further education and institutions/organisations (e.g. schools, offices of public administration) representing source of participants of further education courses. A theoretical part the thesis compares well known methods reporting on the quality and effectivity of further education in a view of both a provider and a customer. A research aims for an analysis of gaining a feedback in the field of further education from 50 providing institutions and 340 institutions/organizations in a role of a customer. Those 340 institutions/organizations include 32 offices of public administrative and another 308 publicly figuring organizations (e.g. schools). This part of the thesis also presents positives and negatives of chosen methods. A conclusion of the thesis summarizes findings and provides recommendations for both surveyed groups.

Exploring Nontraditional Learner Engagement and Motivation through Music Integration

Hershner, Jessa Rae 01 January 2018 (has links)
The increase in population of nontraditional adult learners paired with a demand for multisensory learning created a need for further research in best pedagogy in higher education. Thus, the purpose of this qualitative case study was to explore the central question on how the integration of music, lyrics, or music videos into higher education classrooms affected the motivation and engagement levels of nontraditional adult learners. The conceptual framework was based upon self-determination theory, andragogy, multiple intelligences, and visual literacy. A multiple case design was used to collect data from 8 nontraditional higher education students. Data were collected via telephone interviews and responses to the Activity Perceptions Questionnaire. Data analysis used Yin's cross-case analysis procedures, including familiarization, development of word tables, and examination of cross-case patterns. Results revealed that the use of music in the classroom positively impacts learner engagement and promotes intrinsic motivation. This study is expected to contribute to social change by exploring music as an innovative instructional tool and providing a deeper understanding of how music engages and motivates the increasing number of nontraditional students in higher education.

The Experiences of Sailors with Antiterrorism Force Protection Training at Off-Installation Sites

Harrison, Jessica 01 January 2018 (has links)
Enhancing antiterrorism force protection (ATFP) training at off-installation sites to allow employees to survive a life threatening situation is a necessity after recent events at such military installations. However, little is known about how service members perceive their current ATFP training experiences and how those experiences impact their self-confidence for responding to a threat. The purpose of this qualitative study was to explore how current training experiences impact confidence levels in learning basic security fundamentals to respond to a threat, as well as possible training changes that might improve confidence levels. This study used social constructivism, andragogy theory, heutagogy, and problem-based learning as the conceptual frameworks. Participants were 15 sailors from 5 off-site locations. Data sources were semistructured interviews. Data were analyzed using provisional and open coding strategies to identify themes of supports and barriers to learning ATFP concepts. Results indicated that existing instruction resulted in sailors engaging in supplemental self-training activities to reach what they believed were strong preparedness levels. They also indicated that instruction that emphasizes authentic adult education practices such as learner-center instruction and hands-on drills under the framework of problem-based learning and heutagogy were necessary to increase self-reported levels of confidence in responding to a threat. This study impacts positive social change by providing guidelines for effective terrorist and threat preparedness instruction, regardless of organization, institution, or location that can be used by administrators to improve their confidence and ability to deal with terrorist actions.
