A atividade dos irmãos portugueses Antônio Maria e José Joaquim Teixeira no ramo da edição e do comércio de livros é frequentemente citada nos estudos sobre a história do livro e do impresso na cidade de São Paulo no último terço do século XIX. Foram eles os primeiros editores, em 1888, do romance A Carne, de Júlio Ribeiro, e ainda, no mesmo ano, das Poesias, de Olavo Bilac. A Livraria Teixeira, como ficou conhecido seu estabelecimento, foi também constantemente motivo de notícias, crônicas e matérias jornalísticas publicadas não apenas na imprensa em geral, como também em jornais e revistas especializados em cultura. Ela está presente ainda nas lembranças de alguns paulistanos e até mesmo na narrativa ficcional sobre a cidade. Esse interesse é perfeitamente compreensível, pois a Teixeira acompanhou, como poucas outras de seu gênero, de maneira exemplar e por várias gerações, o desenvolvimento do mercado livreiro na cidade, já que manteve suas portas abertas até os primórdios do século XXI. Seus proprietários conseguiram transformá-la em ponto de encontro de artistas, escritores e políticos. No entanto, muito pouco se sabe sobre os irmãos Teixeira e sua livraria-editora além do que nos legou a narrativa oral dos sucessores do empreendimento. Neste trabalho, pretendemos apresentar os irmãos Teixeira e sua livraria sob a ótica de fontes distintas daquelas já investigadas. Partindo de suas próprias publicações, dos catálogos destinados a divulgar essas edições, das etiquetas de livros que eram produzidas trazendo impressos os dados do estabelecimento e ainda do rico manancial que a imprensa deixou registrado, além de outros documentos, procuramos seguir os passos desses livreiros-editores, bem como de seu sucessor, José Vieira Pontes. Esse percurso nos mostrou uma história fascinante, que incita, a cada momento, múltiplas investigações. Nosso objetivo é, portanto, a partir das questões aqui abordadas, abrir caminho a novas pesquisas sobre o tema. / Studies conducted on the book and printing history in the city of São Paulo in the last third of the 19th century frequently make reference to the publishing and book trade activities of the Portuguese-born brothers Antonio Maria and José Joaquim Teixeira. In 1888, they were the first to publish A Carne, a novel by Julio Ribeiro, and in the same year, Poesias by Olavo Bilac. Their publishing house, Livraria Teixeira, was regularly mentioned in news stories, chronicles and features published not only in the general press but also in newspapers and magazines specialized in culture. The establishment is also very much present in the memory of some inhabitants of the city of São Paulo and even in fictional pieces about the city. Such an interest is perfectly understandable, considering that, unlike many others of its kind, Teixeira also participated in an exemplary manner and for several generations in the development of the citys book market, since it remained open until the early 21st century. Its owners turned it into a meeting point for artists, writers and politicians. Nevertheless, we know very little about the Teixeira brothers and their publishing house/bookstore, only what has been passed down by their successors. The objective of this paper is to show the Teixeira brothers and their bookstore from the perspective of other sources. By following their publications, the catalogues used to divulge these editions, labels printed with the companys information and a wealth of material that was recorded by the press we attempted to retrace the steps taken by these publishers/booksellers and by their successor, José Vieira Pontes. This path revealed a fascinating story, which calls for further investigation. We expect the issues covered herein to unlock opportunities for further research on that matter.
