Evolving building system for expandable housing by means of corrugated metal sheets / Evolving building system : expandable housing by means of corrugated metal sheetsSolana, Maria Begoña January 1986 (has links)
Thesis (M.S.)--Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Dept. of Architecture, 1986. / MICROFICHE COPY AVAILABLE IN ARCHIVES AND ROTCH. / Includes bibliographical references (leaves 79-82). / Large housing programs in developing countries built out of permanent materials are likely to be too costly for low-income people. Such housing would have to be subsidized or allocated to middle-income groups. For this reason, some governments provide sites and services that allow low-income families to live in temporary units. This intervention has enabled low-income families to live on regulated demarcated and serviced land if not in permanent dwelling units. While doing so, they are able to build incrementally more permanent dwellings according with their life-cycle and their changing financial resources. This type of strategy supports the concept that housing is not a finished and static product but a continuous process over time. In order to adapt the initial temporary dwellings built by the low-income groups, and help with their transition to permanent buildings, this thesis proposed a building system which adapts to the dynamic and progressive building processes of these groups. The initial shelter is built out of corrugated metal sheets and steel members made out of thin metal sheets. The building system proceeds in stages from a simple temporary shelter -expanding and evolving- to a permanent dwelling. This transition is achieved by gradually strengthening the structure and transforming the surfaces of the dwelling with different levels of finishings. / by Maria Begoña Solana. / M.S.

Landscapes of convergence : a proposal for exchange at the San Diego-Tijuana borderApigian, Michelle (Michelle Renée), 1971- January 2000 (has links)
Thesis (M.Arch.)--Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Dept. of Architecture; and, (M.C.P.)--Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Dept. of Urban Studies and Planning, 2000. / Includes bibliographical references (p. 92-99). / This thesis addresses the relationship between San Diego, California and Tijuana, Mexico. Although these two cities are part of a single landscape and ecology, they are divided, not only by a physical wall, but very different cultural, social, political and economic realities. This thesis is a proposition about exchange. Economic exchange has always been the driving force for interaction between San Diego and Tijuana. Their relationship has operated at a very fundamental level, rooted in a market economy driven by the laws of supply and demand. My goal is to build on this interaction, to exchange beyond the mutual economic interests and to provide a forum for a broadened, more meaningful exchange. Social, cultural and environmental exchange will heighten understanding and mutual respect, and begin to dissipate the psychological barriers that exist between the two sides, serving to better connect the people of this border region. I believe the foremost place for such interaction is the border region, itself. Currently, it is a painfully disconnected, forbidding and blighted region that harshly articulates the uneasy relationship between the two sides. The border marks a physical line of convergence that could begin to celebrate intellectual and social convergence. My proposal offers an east-west solution to this north-south problem. It establishes a new directionality that runs parallel to the border rather than across it. This new corridor uses the landscape to emphasize that which is shared, while establishing points of reflection and dialogue. The intention is to reinvent the border region as a critical juncture between cultures and nations, making the border not a point or a line, but an engagement. / Michelle Apigian. / M.C.P. / M.Arch.

Enclave : testing city for Korean reunification / Testing city for Korean reunificationSon, Joohui January 2017 (has links)
Thesis: M. Arch., Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Department of Architecture, 2017. / Cataloged from PDF version of thesis. / Includes bibliographical references (pages 146-147). / The city is a form which not only reflects, but also builds social relations. The forms of the city and the types of architecture in the city have been used as tools to lead and stimulate societies toward certain utopias. Then, how can the form of the city and architecture be a tool through which heterogeneous groups of people can live together despite serious political conflict? This thesis explores strategies to establish social relations between two heterogeneous societies, North Korea and South Korea, in Kaesong, a jointly run small industrial city. The two countries joined together to build an industrial city near their border to take advantage of the technology and capital of South Korea and of the labor force in North Korea. This thesis asks: What is the ideal city form for Kaesong City? What kind of scenario will stimulate the polarized people to mingle in Kaesong? What type of architecture will allow the two societies to live together happily? Although Korea was a single country for over 5,000 years before the Korean division in 1948, the North Korean and South Korean social structures are now totally different. Also, the shapes of the cities are entirely different, reflecting the social structures. However, current Kaesong is a replication of a South Korean typical industrial city. Despite the ruthless dictatorship of North Korea under the ideology of communism and socialism, the life of North Korean people is changing toward a free capitalist society. This thesis suggests Kaesong as the accelerator of that movement to reduce the economic and cultural gap between two countries. To do so, this thesis proposes a sequence of urban strategy and architectural types that transforms their everyday life toward a mixed type of city, instead of a replication of one country. / by Joohui Son. / M. A culture of appropriation : strategies of temporary reuse in East GermanyHeinemann, Michaela January 2005 (has links)
Thesis (S.M.)--Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Dept. of Architecture, 2005. / Page 79 blank. / Includes bibliographical references (p. 74-76). / This thesis examines the possibilities of creative appropriation of existing spaces. It defines interstitial practices as both critical and imaginative forces that actively participate in the production of social space. Temporary interventions assert their topicality by inserting themselves into specific urban discourses in which they have the potential to act as cultural catalysts. Two recent festivals, Volkspalast (2004) in Berlin and Hotel Neustadt (2003) in Halle (Saxony-Anhalt), serve as case studies that exemplify different strategies of the temporary. Staged in buildings that were scheduled for demolition, both festivals address the gradual disappearance of "socialist" architecture and urbanism in the realm of the former East Germany. / by Michaela Heinemann. / S.M.

Building upon ruins : the evolution of an urban artifact from infrastructure to public space / Evolution of an urban artifact from infrastructure to public spacePassavanti, Lenore Antonia January 1994 (has links)
Thesis (M. Arch.)--Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Dept. of Architecture, 1994. / Includes bibliographical references (p. 77-82). / A thesis is about what architecture can be. In my thesis I propose that urban infrastructure built in the late nineteenth-century, can be the foundation for urban public space in the late twentieth-century. I propose that by exploring the value inherent in an existing structure, or fragment thereof, we can derive reasons to retain and perhaps add to that structure, all for the enrichment of the urban environment. The why is the value of the artifact. To explore the possible valuations of the urban artifact I have studied various theories of the ruin, monuments, and their role in urban culture. Writings by Alois Riegl, Aldo Rossi. David Lowenthal. Francoise Choay, Theodor Adorno, Manfredo Tafuri , and Giorgio Grassi. among others, have guided this exploration. The second part of the thesis is designed to test the proposition by linking the urban artifact with the present. This linkage would be achieved through the design of a new intervention which would be responsive to the contemporary situation. The programmatic ideas of theater and promenade were employed as both the methods of linkage, and generators of design. / by Lenore Antonia Passavanti. / M.Arch.
