Interactive TVBlanco, Lara January 2014 (has links)
Today TV viewers are exposed to massive amounts of information. Digital TV offers a large number of channels full with different kinds of programs but the information about them is poor. The navigation through the channels can be tiring and often, viewers end up lost, having wasted up to 30 minutes changing channels and not being entertained, which is one of the main purposes of TV. Along with this issue, TV channels have plenty of material they are not using, which is not reachable to viewers who might end up looking for series online and download them illegally. !As a result, viewers are recurring to online TV more and more. They watch specific content through specific TV channel websites. However, the computer or tablet does not allow viewers to certain comforts TV does, and these devices may encourage user isolation since they are normally designed for the usage of one person at a time. The difference between a computer background and a TV background will be discussed further since this aspect became quite important during my research. Viewers enjoyed watching TV while relaxing on the couch, but watching on the computer seemed more efficient, even if it meant sitting down on a chair, because they got instant access to the content they chose. !This thesis will try to design the future of Interactive TV. A TV that will help the user get something worth watching the moment they turn the TV on. After weeks of research and academic reading, I concluded three should be the main characteristics of this design; a Facebook linked profile, implementation of recommender systems and social navigation, plus an adaptive interface. !The results are very promising. A second iteration of the design was made after revising the first concept. It incorporates insights from the concept validation, which I believe completed the design. A design that could work efficiently, and ultimately make the users experience something splendid.

Instruments of Memory: The Architect as ArchivistSmith, Liam Arthur 03 February 2014 (has links)
The mental space in which the architect formulates, tests, and cultivates an idea is deformed by memory, so that nothing projected into this space is bereft of association. However, neither is this space constrained by physical reality, allowing the architect a certain freedom to visualize the totality of an object and the world in which it is projected, simultaneously and in suspension: a space between memory and imagination. Memories and experiences layer richness upon this inner world and form the context for its manifestation; its realization. The deliberate and conscientious curation of this inner world-- the architect as archivist of memory and experience-- is an essential practice for the development of the architect and the worlds in which they operate. / Master of Architecture

Getting the measure of brochs: using survey records old and new to investigate Shetland's Iron Age archaeologySou, Li Z., Bond, Julie M., Dockrill, Stephen, Hepher, J., Rawlinson, A., Sparrow, Thomas, Turner, V., Wilson, L., Wilson, Andrew S. 19 August 2022 (has links)
No / Brochs are monumental Iron Age (c.400–200 BC) drystone towers or roundhouses. They are only found in Scotland, particularly the Atlantic north and west. Whilst the structural layout of brochs has long been debated, few measured surveys have been conducted. Three significant broch sites form the tentative World Heritage site of “Mousa, Old Scatness and Jarlshof: the Zenith of Iron Age Shetland” (UNESCO in Mousa, Old Scatness and Jarlshof: the zenith of Iron Age Shetland, UNESCO (2019) Mousa, Old Scatness and Jarlshof: the zenith of Iron Age Shetland. http://whc.unesco.org/en/tentativelists/5677. Accessed 9 Aug 2019). All three sites have undergone new surveys as part of a collaborative doctoral partnership research project. This chapter presents a diachronic perspective using digital documentation techniques to detect stone displacement and weathering at the site of Old Scatness using historic imagery, including photographs from the Old Scatness excavations (1995–2006) and regular condition monitoring undertaken by Shetland Amenity Trust to undertake retrospective digital structure-from-motion (SfM) photogrammetry. Whilst point clouds and 3D meshes were successfully generated from low-resolution digital images, analogue film transparencies without metadata could not produce accurate geospatial data without manually trying to extant reference data. It was possible to detect displacements in stonework over time by comparing two meshes together and measuring the distances between vertex point pairs. The reliability and accuracy of these results were dependent on how well pairs of meshes could be aligned.

A decision support system for vessel speed decision in maritime logistics using weather archive big dataLee, Habin, Aydin, N., Choi, Y., Lekhavat, S., Irani, Zahir 06 2017 (has links)
Yes / Speed optimization of liner vessels has significant economic and environmental impact for reducing fuel cost and Green House Gas (GHG) emission as the shipping over maritime logistics takes more than 70% of world transportation. While slow steaming is widely used as best practices for liner shipping companies, they are also under the pressure to maintain service level agreement (SLA) with their cargo clients. Thus, deciding optimal speed that minimizes fuel consumption while maintaining SLA is managerial decision problem. Studies in the literature use theoretical fuel consumption functions in their speed optimization models but these functions have limitations due to weather conditions in voyages. This paper uses weather archive data to estimate the real fuel consumption function for speed optimization problems. In particular, Copernicus data set is used as the source of big data and data mining technique is applied to identify the impact of weather conditions based on a given voyage route. Particle swarm optimization, a metaheuristic optimization method, is applied to find Pareto optimal solutions that minimize fuel consumption and maximize SLA. The usefulness of the proposed approach is verified through the real data obtained from a liner company and real world implications are discussed.

Integrating Change Through Documentation of Experience for Immersive Mediaarden, sasha 08 August 2024 (has links)
Immersive media (IM) is a class of technologies that aim to create an immersive environment for viewers, such as virtual reality (VR), augmented reality (AR), mixed reality (MR or XR), and 360° or panoramic projection installations. The preservation of immersive media is a growing field of research and practice, whether for historical reference of these technologies, or for re-exhibition of artistic/creative works. IM benefits from existing strategies developed for preservation of complex digital and physical media such as software-based art and installation artworks, but the unique characteristics of IM lead to unique preservation needs. Exploring how these needs may be met through expanded documentation and cataloging practices prompts reflection on how such changes could set larger institutional shifts into motion.

Doing visual archaeology: archive images and participatory film-makingCapstick, Andrea, Ludwin, Katherine January 2015 (has links)
Yes / Visual sociology often relies for its content on researcher-created or participant-created images. In this article we discuss our use of existing local history archive images in a participatory film-making project with ten people living in residential dementia care in the Northern UK. We draw on the concept of archaeology in two ways: first, as used by Foucault (1972), who contends that archaeology is a metaphor for exploring traces left by the past in order to understand the present. Secondly, in a more obvious sense–many of the most salient cultural references for our participants related to public buildings and local landmarks that had been demolished, repurposed, or dramatically changed in appearance since their youth. / UK National Institute for Health Research – School for Social Care Research
