Aditus ad archivum: exploring access to Catholic diocesan archives in CanadaPetrowski, Tyyne Rae 13 September 2016 (has links)
Canadian Catholic dioceses are both spiritual and administrative centres. Their archives are thus important to the church and wider society, given the church's impact on Canadian life. Aditus ad Archivum is a study of the complexities of access to the archives of these seventy-two dioceses, which have been and continue to be influenced by diverse, overlapping, and sometimes seemingly contradictory factors. This thesis provides a full picture of the history, laws, policies, recommendations, and other practical realities of Catholic diocesan archives in Canada.
This study also introduces the concept of active access: a vision and means of support for greater access to archives. The implications of applying active access are explored by examining how Canadian Catholic dioceses provide information about their archives online. One main conclusion is that overarching church archival policies encourage greater access than is provided by most dioceses, and this thesis proposes ways to act on those recommendations. / October 2016

Archives in the United States and Japan: Executive Session SummaryKoga, Takashi January 2007 (has links)
The conference's website: http://www.archivists.org/publications/proceedings/accesstoarchives/index.asp / The author's role in the Japan-U.S. Archives Seminar (at the University of Tokyo, Japan, May 9-11, 2007) was to summarize the discussions from the closed session and to evaluate the overall issues in the seminar. This paper offers two ways in which the author satisfies this role:
1) Picking up the similarities and differences in the Japan and U.S. archives identified through the discussions in the closed session, rather than summarizing each speech in the session; and
2) Suggesting topics that should be shared and discussed by people in Japan and the United States.

Implementation of the DIRKS Methodology by International Organizations: The Case of the United NationsKoga, Takashi, Ogawa, Chiyoko January 2007 (has links)
The authors conducted a research on the records management activities in the United Nations (UN) through an investigation of the UN website and a field research at the Archives and Records Management Section (ARMS) at the UN Headquarters in New York in September 2006. This research aimed to identify the issues in records management that serve as communication measures to overcome language and cultural barriers in international organizations.
Among the research results, it is interesting to note that ARMS is implementing the methodology of Designing and Implementing Recordkeeping Systems (DIRKS) based on ISO 15489 for the records management of UN projects, operations, and housekeeping activities. In particular, it appears that ARMS places considerable value on business analysis with other UN departments so that it can approve record scheduling and classification periods. In addition, ARMS establishes the "Taxonomy for recordkeeping," which is applicable to peacekeeping operations as well as mapping the taxonomy with the scheduling. The staff of ARMS emphasizes the importance of the DIRKS methodology in terms of its flexibility as a pragmatic solution for recordkeeping activities in the UN.
This paper discusses the effect of the DIRKS methodology-which originated within the Australian and Oceanic contexts-and its value for international organizations. It also discusses the background of the current records management activities of the UN as well as the challenges in implementing the DIRKS methodology in international contexts.

Overview of Archives and Archival Issues in JapanKoga, Takashi January 2007 (has links)
Despite the tradition of maintaining official and private archives since around the eight century, the development of modern archives in Japan was hampered until recently. The following posed huge obstacles to the development: (1) poor records management between central and local governments and (2) lack of understanding of archives among the public. The National Archives of Japan (NAJ) was finally established in 1971; national-level legislations concerning the archives were not set until 1987. Now, in the 2000s, there is a strong movement toward the development of archives in Japan. The following are the primary forces behind the movement: (1) development of "digital archives" owing to the popularization of the Internet, especially the Japan Center for Asian Historical Records (JACAR) that was established as a branch of the NAJ in 2001, and (2) political support for archival institutions and archival issues, as shown in the discussion of the advisory panel under the Cabinet Office of Japan since 2003. In addition, the Japan Society for Archival Science (JSAS) was established in 2004 as the first academic society concerning archival science in Japan. The JSAS promotes the establishment of academic foundations of archival science through the acceptance of theories in the Western world, such as the theory of "records continuum." While Japan is experiencing such developments, there are numerous challenges for the future developments of archives in the country, such as raising the number of archival institutions, establishment of legislations concerning archives and records management, and promotion of understanding of archives among the public. Among these challenges, the largest one will be to determine the manner in which an accreditation system for professional archivists can be established and stable employment for prospective archivists can be secured.
