Understanding users of a freely-available online health risk assessment : an exploration using segmentation

Health organizations and governments are investing considerable resources into Internet-based health promotion. There is a large and growing body of research on health “etools” but to date most has been conducted using experimental paradigms; much less is known about those that are freely-available. Analysis was conducted of the data base generated through the operation of the freely-available health risk assessment (HRA) of the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Ontario. During the study period of February 1 to December 20, 2011, 147,274 HRAs were completed, of which 120,510 (79.8%) included consent for the use of information for research and were completed by adults aged 18 to 90 years. Comparison of Canadian users to national statistics confirmed that the HRA sample is not representative of the general population. The HRA sample is significantly and systematically biased by gender, education, employment, heath behaviours, and the prevalence of specific chronic diseases. Etool users may be a large but select segment of the population, those previously described as “Internet health information seekers.” Are all Internet health information seekers the same? To explore this issue, segmentation procedures available in common commercial packages (k-means clustering, two-step clustering, and latent class analysis) were conducted using five combinations of variables. Ten statistically significant solutions were created. The most robust solution divided the sample into four groups differentiated by age (two younger and two older groups) and healthiness, as reflected by disease and modifiable risk factor burden and readiness to make lifestyle changes. These groups suggest that while all users of online health etools may be health information seekers, they vary in the extent to which they are health oriented or health conscientious (i.e., engaging in preventive health behaviours or ready for behaviour change). It is hoped that this research will provide other organizations with similar data bases with a model for analyzing their client populations, therefore increasing our knowledge about health etool users.

Risk Assessment and Mitigation Strategies : Suppliers and Retailers in the Swedish Organic Food Market

Abstract Background: Consumer interest and demand for healthy and ecologically produced local food has led to a high market demand that local production cannot meet. Product attributes of perishability and short life cycles ensure that even local supply chains are challenging to manage. This increases potential for risks occurrence in an Organic Food Supply Chain (OFSC) especially with unreliable supply of products. Small and established food retailers import organic food products from across the world. Custom delays, high transport charges, commodity costs and regulatory requirements are associated with food imports. This renders OFSCs complex and vulnerable to disruptions or breakdowns that require appropriate strategies to identify and mitigate risks. Purpose: To gain an overall insight of risks mitigation in OFSCs. The purpose of this thesis is to assess risks affecting suppliers and retailers of organic food and propose risk mitigation strategies to prevent or minimise supply chain breakdowns. Method: This qualitative study utilizes a case study strategy involving seven case firms and seven research respondents. Data is collected through semi-structured interviews and documentary secondary data. The analysis of the empirical findings is conducted by cross analysing empirical findings of respective case firms and then emerging patterns are formulated into a general framework. Conclusions: Low conversion rates of farms for organic production, high costs of investments and regulatory requirements have contributed to prevailing production risks that partly cause low organic output. Other risks identified that could disrupt the food chain under study include sourcing, warehousing, demand, price, financial and institutional risks. Mitigation strategies proposed include production procedures, CAP, supply chain flexibility, supply chain visibility, certification, diversification of retail channels, brand image building, horizontal & vertical cooperation and buyer-supplier relations.

Chemicals and additives in products being produced and marketed globally, this makes an international harmonised assessment and management essential. Chemical testing, research on risks, impacts and management options are carried out throughout the globe but quite fractionated to certain areas and sectors and much too often with little linkages between the different scientific communities. The coordination action (CA) \"RISKCYCLE\" is aimed to establish and o-ordinate a global network of European and international experts and stakeholders to define together future needs of R+D contributions for innovations in the risk-based management of chemicals and products in a circular economy of global scale leading to alternative strategies to animal tests and reduced health hazards. The partners joining this action seek to explore the synergies of the research carried out within different programmes and countries of the EU, in Asia and overseas to facilitate the intensified communication with researchers, institutions and industries about the risks of hazardous chemicals and additives in products and risk reduction measures and to improve the dispersion of available information. In this thesis, risk management methods are investigated in order to integrate risk management practices into the Turkish Aerospace industry. The research presents the sequence of risk management processes as identification of risk, analysis of risk, risk planning etc. Risk analysis methods named as Risk Ranking and Analytical Hierarchy Process (AHP) are investigated in order to improve reliability and safety of the systems or processes in the aerospace industry. The main aim of using risk ranking and AHP together is to translate the knowledge in the Turkish Aviation Industry to a tangible form with a quantitative approach and to prepare a basis for probabilistic risk analysis. Instrument Landing System (ILS) has been considered only in order to facilitate a demonstration how risk management can be done in this context. This study investigates and seeks to create awareness for risk management practices within Turkish Aviation industry.
