"The Signs of Heaven to Ken": Astrological Lore and Spenser's / The Shepheardes Calender

This thesis argues that Spenser•s handling of character, situation, and theme throughout The Shepheardes Calender corresponds to the traditional significations of the planetary and zodiacal governors of the twelve eclogues. The introductory chapter outlines some fundamental principles of the two astrological traditions relevant to the present study, traditions that I have loosely called Ptolemaic or "Scientific" and Neoplatonic, and explains that the lack of horoscopal information about the characters constitutes no serious barrier to my approach. To avoid the repetition that would result from organizing the study around zodiacal signs, I have used a planet-by-planet approach. Chapter I analyses Colin Clouts past achievements and his present predicament in terms of two distinct but related conceptions of Saturn and melancholy: its main argument is that Colin's early accomplishments align him with a benevolent Saturn and with what Yates calls inspired melancholy (based ultimately on the "Aristotelian" Physical Problems XXX), the earthly Venus leads him in a contrary direction, and the frustration of this Venerean impulse makes him a victim of the malevolent Saturn of popular astrology. Chapter II argues that in "Februarie", ruled by Jupiter, a mean between Saturn and Venus, the conflict between the malevolent Saturn and the earthly Venus reappears in the debate between a Saturnian Thenot and a Venerean Cuddie, and that since all figures in the debate and the tale are "failed Jupiters" , the conflict ends in a deadlock aptly corresponding to the fact that the fish of Pisces move in opposite directions, but within the same element, and are bound by a common cord. In "November", however, Dido is a true Jovial figure, and the Jovial aspects of the eclogue's context temporarily dispel Colin's Saturnian gloom and cooperate with the benevolent Saturn to lift Colin's mind "above the starry skie", a movement appropriate to the significations of the centaur figure Sagittarius. Chapter III shows that Spenser accommodates Mars in his Calender: by parodic reduction in "March" and by evoking Mars in "October" to point beyond the pastoral to his projected epic. The Venus inherited by the Renaissance represents a vast range of ideas about love and beauty, from the basest carnality through to the principles of cosmic harmony and the most mystical expressions of love for God. Chapter IV discusses the correspondences between several of these significations and the eel ogues for Venus' two signs, Taurus ("April") and Libra ("September"): in addition to discussing Colin's misadventure in love, this chapter demonstrates "April's" suitability for a celebration of the encomiastic poet; discusses the manifestations of Venus that are in harmony with the benevolent Saturn; examines Eliza's role as a Venus figure presiding over an idyllic natural, political, and poetic environment in contrast to the iron age of the framing dialogue; and shows that although the world Diggon describes in "September" is the antithesis of that depicted in the "April" ode, Roffyn in actuality, and Hobbinoll and Diggon in potentiality, represent the forces (seen as another Saturn-Venus combination) that can effectively reconstruct the world in imitation of the peace, harmony, justice, mercy, friendship, and liberality of the "April" ode. Chapter V examines Mercurial motifs in "Maye., and August": the stress in "Maye's", debate on the duties and responsibilities of the clergy, particularly with respect to worldly wealth and to preaching ability and debating skills, is suitable to Mercury's rulership, as is the emphasis on fraud, deceit, and wealth in Piers' tale; Mercury's gift of verbal skill and dexterity is manifested in both the roundelay and the sestina in "August" Since the sun signifies things spiritual, while the moon is an age-old symbol of material mutability, "Julye" appropriately deals with ecclesiastical matters and "June" with secular; the two eclogues are complementary discussions of the moral and practical problems for the poet and priest of prominence or aspiration. Chapter VI shows that Spenser handles the themes of prominence and aspiration in ways suitable to the celestial governors of these eclogues: the sun and Leo are consistently associated with the ambitious or pre-eminent and with the perils and temptations besetting them, so "Julye's " debate covers these subjects and provides a catalogue of notable men; the most wellknown properties of the moon and Cancer (e.g., the moon's inconstancy and its shining by borrowed light and the sun's reversal of direction in Cancer) do not augur well for any ambitious impulse, so in "June" neither speaker is ambitious and Colin provides a bewildering series of rationalizations to justify his loss of aspiration. Iatromathematics in medical discourse of early modern era: Czech lands before 1620 Mgr. Jakub Žytek, M.Phil. Abstract: This dissertation examines iatromathematics, or astrological medicine, in the early modern medicine of the Czech lands before 1620 (sources ranging from 1491 to 1619). It seeks to both comprehensively outline this specific and then quite standard medical doctrine as well as assess the role and significance of iatromathematics for the practice of the early modern physician and its position within the system of contemporary humoral medicine as a whole. Within the Czech study of the history of medicine, such a systematic treatment of the topic of iatromathematics is unprecedented. Having defined the historical framework of astrology in European cultural history and the concept of astrologia naturalis in the contemporaneous philosophy of nature, the thesis maps the tradition of iatromathematics in medieval sources of Czech origin and the development of the discipline in the early modern era. Then, employing textual analyses and interpretations, it examines various medical sources (books of prognostica, bloodletting booklets, almanacs, treatises on plague, phlebotomic instructions, health regiments) that focused on the influence and action of the heavenly bodies on human health. Die Dissertation befasst sich mit einer Form der Heilkunde, die Astrologie und Medizin kombinierte, und im antiken Babylonien (heute südlicher Irak) in der spätbabylonischen Zeit existierte (6–1. Jh. v. Chr.). Enthalten sind Editionen und Untersuchungen zu Keilschrifttafeln mit astro-medizinischen Texten, größtenteils aus Archiven und Tempelbibliotheken der beiden Orte Babylon und Uruk, den wichtigsten Zentren des wissenschaftlichen Lebens in dieser Zeit. Besondere Aufmerksamkeit wird hierbei dem Tierkreis sowie dem Mikrozodiak gewidmet, und dem Prozess der Integration astrologischen Wissens in die Heilkunst. Eines der betrachteten astromedizinischen Systeme ist das Stein-Pflanze-Holz-Schema. In diesem System wurden Materialien aus den drei Gruppen im Namen des Schemas den Tierkreiszeichen zugeordnet. Es gab neben der mit dem Tierkreis verbundenen Standardversion, die einen kalendarischen Vorläufer hatte, auch eine erweiterte Version in Verbindung mit den 144 Mikro-Tierkreiszeichen. Das einfache Zodiakschema wurde auch in den iatromathematischen Kalender integriert, ein astromedizinisches System, das u. a. aus einer Gruppe von Kalendertexten bestand, die für jeden Tag des schematischen 360-Tage-Kalenders pharmakologisch-therapeutische Anweisungen enthielten, und der Melothesie, einem Konzept, das jedem der Tierkreiszeichen einen Einfluss auf eine bestimmte Region des menschlichen Körpers zuschrieb. Die babylonische Astromedizin bildete die Grundlage für die spätere hellenistische Astromedizin, die viele der Konzepte und Methoden übernahm. / The thesis deals with a form of medicine combining astrology and medicine that existed in ancient Babylonia (now southern Iraq) in the late Babylonian period (6th-1st centuries BC). Editions and studies of astro-medical cuneiform tablets are included, mostly originating from archives and temple libraries in the two cities of Babylon and Uruk, the main centers of scholarly life in that era. Particular consideration is given to the zodiac and the micro-zodiac and to the process by which astrological knowledge began to be integrated into the healing arts. One astro-medical therapeutic system is the so-called ‘stone-plant-wood’-schema. In this system materials from the three groups of nature in the name of the schema are associated with the zodiacal signs. Two different versions of it existed: a standard one in connection with zodiac (which had a calendrical forerunner) and an advanced version in connection with the 144 micro-zodiac signs. The standard zodiac schema was also integrated in a comprehensive iatromathematical calendar, an astro-medical system which consisted inter alia of a group of calendar texts (menologies that give prescriptions for each day of the schematic 360-day calendar), remedies made of animal substances that were associated with the signs of the (micro)-zodiac, and melothesia i.e. a concept ascribing to each of the zodiac signs an influence on a specific region of the human body. Late Babylonian astrological medicine formed the basis for later Hellenistic astro-medicine which adopted many of the Babylonian concepts and methods.

The investigation will be made from the genre published in magazines, especially in facing the female audience in almanacs and Internet. To achieve this scope, we launched a analytical look on our subject from theoretical alliances, which are: a Discourse Theory of Traditions and Linguistic Change, Theory of the Imaginary, the theory of discourse analysis and cultural studies, from of theoretical studies as Eugenio Coseriu, Johannes Kabatek, Gilbert Durand, Mircea Eliade, CarlJung, Michel Foucault, Michel Pecheux, Eni Orlandi, Stuart Hall, Zygmunt Bauman, among others, seeking thereby to account for the discursive constructions, imagistic, symbolic and mythical traditions that relate to that underlie gender horoscope as well as the update of this discourse in other genres. Regarding methodological aspects, it is a qualitative research, literature and exploratory, aiming to provide greater awareness of the problem in order to make it explicit. From the analysis we can see that the discourse is marked by horoscope-discursive traditions imagery from the recurrence of linguistic and extralinguistic elements. It also apeared that the discourse of contemporary gender horoscope in magazines is eminently feminine. / Esta pesquisa tem como objetivo analisar o discurso do gênero horóscopo em diferentes suportes, em especial, em revistas femininas, atentando para as marcas de mudança e de permanência sócio-histórico-discursivas sofridas ao longo do tempo. A investigação foi feita a partir do gênero publicado em revistas, principalmente nas voltadas para o público feminino, em almanaques e Internet. Para alcançar tal escopo, lançamos um olhar analítico sobre nosso objeto de estudo a partir de alianças teóricas, quais sejam: a Teoria das Tradições Discursivas e Mudanças Linguísticas, a Teoria do Imaginário, a Teoria da Análise do Discurso e os estudos culturais, a partir dos estudos de teóricos como Eugenio Coseriu, Johannes Kabatek, Gilbert Durand, Mircea Eliade, Carl Jung, Michel Foucault, Michel Pêcheux, Eni Orlandi, Stuart Hall, Zygmunt Bauman, entre outros, procurando, com isso, dar conta das construções sociais, históricas, discursivas, imagéticas, simbólicas e míticas que dizem respeito às tradições que dão base ao gênero horóscopo, bem como a atualização desse discurso em outros gêneros discursivos. Quanto aos aspectos metodológicos, trata-se de uma pesquisa qualitativa, bibliográfica e exploratória, visando proporcionar maior familiaridade com o problema a fim de torná-lo explícito. A partir das análises, conseguimos observar que o discurso do horóscopo é marcado por tradições imagético-discursivas, com base na recorrência de elementos linguísticos e extralinguísticos. Também foi possível constatar que o discurso do gênero horóscopo nas revistas contemporâneas é eminentemente feminino.
