Spanish and Cuban Politicians, Publicists and Reporters facing the Cuban Crisis at the End of the Nineteenth Century

Aparicio-Torres, Maria 02 March 2017 (has links)
In my dissertation, I study a selection of little known Spanish and Cuban texts published during the Cuban War of Independence at the end of the 19th century. In this project, I provide a transatlantic approach of literary texts in various genres and subgenres, and political messages exchanged between Cuba and Spain, which have been neglected by scholars in the field. By analyzing the emergence of a colonial discourse in the works of novelists, politicians and thinkers who wrote about the Cuban-Spanish confrontation, I establish their ambiguous and frequently contradictory colonial messages. In doing so, this dissertation furthers our understanding of the complexities of the political moment as well as the interest and ideals that ignited the conflict. The study is of great relevance in view of the recent agreements between the United States and Cuba. The relations between the two countries are evolving in a way that was unthinkable at the beginning of the 20th century. Furthermore, secessionist feelings within the Spanish nation are reemerging and similar allegations and demands that brought Cuba to independence are in place. For all these reasons, it is necessary revisiting and comprehending the complex and, frequently contradictory, discourses that emerged in a moment, which was determinant for the development and future political attitudes of the three nations involved.

We begin with a central category of Social Psychology, the conceptual use of identity-metamorphosis-emancipation sintagma. The proposal arose in the inquiry for the political Identity of the autonomous activist as a transformation process for the emancipation of the subject in a dominated world. This transformation occurs on the path to what we call Post-Conventional Identity. For this observation an analysis was performed of the history of the life of a member of the São Paulo Independent Media Center, as well as field work including participation in meetings and acts of autonomous nature. We perceive that nobody is born an activist, but passes through a process that leads him to this place. To think of the autonomous activist as a role is a contradiction, but to consider the activist identity as an I who searches for autonomy and recognizes the diverse actions for another political and social reality, which with new forms of existence come to gain legitimacy for the struggles in search of emancipation. The history of life of the autonomous activist passes through different processes that can take it to an amplification of given values and recognitions being more cooperation than competition. This work searches to weave reflections on the different possibilities to be political beyond the institutions and traditional parties / Esta dissertação busca investigar a identidade do ativista autonomista envolvido no Movimento de Resistência Global.

Josep Tarradellas (1899-1936) : Dels orígens a la Guerra Civil.

Esculies, Joan, 1976- 19 November 2012 (has links)
The thesis Josep Tarradellas (1899-1936). From Origins to the Civil War explores the youth of the President of the Generalitat de Catalunya (1954-1980) and the period of his political education. The research shows how the development and professional experience of Tarradellas, as a shop assistant, sales representative and business man, influenced his later political action. It argues that Tarradellas used the organizational skills learned in his job as the basis of his management, planning and pragmatic policies and appears in this respect, to share a profile more closely related to American businessmen that became politicians, than to his Catalan and Spanish political contemporaries. The thesis stops at the beginning of the Spanish Civil War, when the training of Tarradellas as a politician ends and when he becomes a central figure of the new period as an ‘adult’ politician. The work also argues that Tarradellas set up a false narrative on his youth, during the period 1977-1988, which has been commonly accepted. The thesis suggests that this alteration, far from being the result of forgetfulness, was done with the aim of searching for legitimization as a President in order to tie his image to that of President Francesc Macià (1931-1933).
