Student Number:9402474A Master of Education (Educational Psychology) School of Human and Community Development Faculty Humanities / The aim of the study was to determine the beliefs and practices regarding HIV/Aids awareness and prevention among service providers working in the field of intellectual disability. In order to investigate this aim, a cross-sectional survey research design was employed which incorporated a purposive sampel that consisted of 28 participants representing 21 organizations catering for adults with intellectual disability in Gauteng. These participants were interviewed using a structured interview schedule and the data were analysed using both descriptive statistics and content analysis. The results indicated that the majority of participants perceived that their organization had a role to play in raising awareness and preventing the spread of HIV/Aids and considered adults with intellectual disability to be a risk for contracting HIV.

Thesis (MPhil (Industrial Psychology))--Stellenbosch University, 2008. / The purpose of this research was to determine the efficacy of an innovation in HIV prevention programming in Ukraine, which leverages the culture of Ukrainian society by appreciating its values and incorporating them into the strategy. Analysis of the results indicates that positive changes in two of the questions of the Behavioural Models were significant among the participants of the Experimental Group. This was not seen in the Control Group. The number of respondents from the Experimental Group who spoke to their partner about HIV/AIDS in the past month increased during the month after the training. The number of people who were tested for HIV during the month after training also increased. Based on the results of this research, it can be concluded that participation of employees’ sexual partners in HIV prevention programs can influence Behaviour Models and lead to desired changes in this area changes in Behaviour Models, which are very important and as we can see depends much on participation of both sexual partners in training.

In the light of the HIV/AIDS pandemic in South Africa, the Department of Education is promoting HIV/AIDS awareness programmes in public schooling. This dissertation focuses on the management of these programmes in secondary schools in the North West Province using a literature review and empirical investigation. The former discusses the disease and treatment, its prevalence and impact on education and the role of principal, educators and parents in prevention. A qualitative study investigated the views of a small sample of principals, teachers and learners from three secondary schools in the North West Province. Sites and participants were selected by purposeful sampling. Data gathering took place by interviewing principals and educators and by essays written by tenth grade learners. Findings illustrated the importance of community values, information, a school policy, inservice teacher training and the contribution of parents and the church. As population increases, and development calls for increased allocation of ground water and surface water for the domestic, agriculture and industrial sectors, the pressure on water resources intensifies. This is exacerbated by the wastages that occur in schools and homes. Conservation of water by all consumers is essential.
