This thesis analyzes James Baldwin's essays as a method for understanding racial identity and authenticity. By using Vetta Sanders-Thompson's racial identification parameters, I suggest that Baldwin's struggle with his identity as a black American is crucial to deposing the idea of a monolithic black experience, which opens up new ways of analyzing African American literature.

This paper draws on the non-fiction writings of James Baldwin to introduce a novel conception of white guilt that is consistent with standard philosophical views that guilt is fitting only in cases of direct moral culpability while addressing practical criticism that white guilt is at variance with the aims of social justice movements. Taking on Baldwin's perspective on whiteness as a subjective choice, I develop an Identity-Based Account of white guilt describing the emotion as tracking culpability for a pernicious form of self-identification. My central claim is that white guilt is fitting because in experiencing the emotion, one is simultaneously recognizing the role their own identity plays in providing a source of justification for actions that sustain a system of injustice. Conceived in this way, responses to white guilt demand taking part in corrective political action as a means of moral self-creation. / Master of Arts / In the wake of the deaths of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Ahmaud Arbery, and others due to police and vigilante actions, there has been a noticeable shift in racial sentiments among white individuals in the US and globally, leading to increased reports of white guilt. This paper explores the concept of white guilt as a negative, self-conscious emotion experienced by white people in response to their behaviors, attitudes, or perceived racist injustices. It addresses two main concerns: the appropriateness of white guilt when many white individuals lack direct culpability, and the effectiveness of outcomes driven by this guilt in combating racial injustice. Drawing on James Baldwin's writings, the paper proposes a novel understanding of white guilt, focusing on white individuals' self-perception rather than their actions.

David Baldwin has been the trumpet professor at the University of Minnesota since 1974. His most celebrated accomplishment is his recording of the Charlier 36 Etudes de Transcendantes and the Marcel Bitsch Vingt Etudes. In addition to this recording Baldwin has made recordings of etude books by Small, St. Jacome, Arban, Caffarelli, Smith, and the 32 Etudes de Perfectionnement also by Charlier. The quality of performance on all of these makes them excellent reference recordings. The back cover of the Etudes 32 de Perfectionnement reveals that the two-CD album, with a total run time of 115:35, was recorded over a span of four days. Endurance is a topic that all brass players confront. Baldwin wrote an etude book titled Lips of Steel that also contains two previously published articles on the topic of endurance. His ideas on endurance reveal a unique approach. This study analyzes the pedagogical concepts in those articles and in Lips of Steel. In addition to his recording projects, Baldwin has had many successful students. Thomas Rolfs and Lynn Erickson are both members of full-time professional orchestras. Larry Griffin, Scott Hagarty, and many others built their careers as professors of trumpet. An investigation of Baldwin's influence on his students further reveals how he approaches teaching and how his pedagogy has influenced his students who are now successful college professors.

Notre équipe a récemment décrit la synthèse de nouveaux iminosucres de type indolizidines et quinolizidines, qui se sont avérés être de puissants inhibiteurs sélectifs d’α-glucosidases (IC50 nanomolaires). Ces molécules, de structure originale, ont la particularité de posséder un centre quaternaire en jonction de cycles et une configuration D-gluco. Dans le but de mieux comprendre le mode d’interaction de ces molécules avec les glycosidases, nous nous sommes intéressés à la synthèse de leurs analogues comportant un motif aziridine, inclus dans un squelette 1 azabicyclo[4.1.0]heptane.L’approche synthétique que nous avons choisie pour accéder aux aziridinyl iminosucres implique une cycloaddition 1,3-dipolaire régio- et stéréoselective de cétonitrones dérivées de sucres avec des alcynes pour former des isoxazolines et un réarrangement de Baldwin stéréosélectif en 2 acylaziridines. Pour les acylaziridines polybenzylées la conversion en aziridinyl iminosucres a été effectuée par réduction diastéréosélective de leur fonction cétone et déprotection dans des conditions réductrices de Birch. Pour les acylaziridines polyacétylées les iminosucres finaux ont été obtenus par réduction en présence d’hydrures métalliques.Grâce à cette stratégie de synthèse originale, efficace, et économique en atomes, nous avons préparés 7 aziridinyl iminosucres, et 5 isoxazolines polyhydroxylées. Tous ces nouveaux iminosucres ont été évalués comme inhibiteurs de glycosidases, et se sont avérées être des inhibiteurs moyens (IC50 micromolaires) mais sélectifs des α-glucosidases. L’obtention de complexes cristallins avec une α-glucosidase bactérienne a permis de montrer par cristallographie leur mode d’interaction avec cette enzyme, à l’échelle moléculaire. / Our team has recently described the synthesis of new indolizidine and quinolizidine iminosugars, which revealed to be potent and selective α-glucosidase inhibitors (nanomolar IC50). These original molecules exhibit a quaternary center at the ring junction and a D-gluco configuration. With the aim to define the mode of interaction of these molecules with glycosidases, we engaged in the synthesis of analogues containing an aziridine moiety included in a 1-azabicyclo[4.1.0]heptane scaffold.Our synthetic approach towards aziridinyl iminosugars involves a stereoselective 1,3-dipolar cycloaddition between carbohydrate-derived cyclic ketonitrones and alkynes, and a stereoselective Baldwin rearrangement into 2-acylaziridines. The latter (if polybenzylated) were converted into aziridinyl iminosugars through diastereoselective reduction of their ketone function and deprotection under Birch conditions. In the case of polyacetylated acylaziridines, the final iminosugars were obtained by reduction with hydrides.Using this strategy, we have prepared 7 aziridinyl iminosugars, and 5 polyhydroxylated isoxazolines. All these new iminosugars were evaluated as glycosidase inhibitors, and they revealed to be modest (micromolar IC50) but selective inhibitors of α-glucosidases. Their complexes with a crystalline bacterial α-glucosidase allowed crystallographic elucidation of their mode of interaction with this enzyme at the molecular level.
