Strangers within our midst? : panhandling, identity and community conflict in Canada

Leech, Jessica F. January 2002 (has links)
Across Canada, municipalities have been struggling to alleviate the poverty of increasing numbers of homeless people and panhandlers on city streets. Simultaneously, tensions have risen between these street people and the general public. This thesis is a narrative study of the current conflict between panhandlers and other community stakeholders in Calgary, Alberta. This study presents the diverse viewpoints and voices of people who panhandle, homeless people, the general public, the downtown business community, social service providers, city bureaucrats and police officers. This study examines how identity politics and broader social ideologies shape face-to-face street encounters and influence debates over public policy at an institutional level. The relationship between panhandlers and the public is typically one marked by social distance. The current approach to panhandlers involves treating them as "strangers within our midst." This approach undermines their citizenship and heightens tensions within the community more so than would an approach that emphasizes their commonality with the larger society and their rights within civic space.

Understanding social value creation : A process study of Romanian beggars and Swedish volunteers

Follet, Charles, Ianko, Irina Eva January 2015 (has links)
There were several attempts to conceptualize the social value creation process. Previous literature does not commonly consider a non-material approach, using mainly quantitative practices which are not in line with the characteristics of social value. This thesis contributes to the current social value creation studies in two ways. The first centers the subjectivity of social value as a phenomenon embedded in space and time which calls for distinctive ways of understanding its creation. Here the research approaches the hedonic perspective of well-being as a processual phenomenon which makes possible to explore the way social value is created from beneficiaries’ perspective. The second contribution is an empirical study within a voluntary program in order to explore how the beneficiaries’ subjective well-being unfolds over time. In this setting, where impoverished people deal with satisfying their basic needs, a process approach reveals the emotionally loaded context and the complexity of the social value creation. Thereby, the main emphasis of this thesis is to put on a deeper theoretical discussion of the concept of social value creation. The result of this research is an understanding of social value creation as a subjective construct centered on how the process uncovers unique moments experienced by people.

Eu mendigo: alguns discursos da mendicância na cidade de São Paulo / I beg: some speechs about begging in the city of São Paulo

Cesar Eduardo Gamboa Serrano 30 April 2004 (has links)
This research examines the speech produced by beggars in the city of São Paulo, as well as the connections between the act of begging and the subjectivities produced in this situation. Six interviews were made with beggars that live in three different regions in the city: south, downtown and Av. Paulista. After a loyal transcription of the interviews, the material was analised using as metodological reference the speech analysis as proposed by Marlene Guirado. Three types of subjectivities, in a begging situation, were organized. These types of subjectivities referred to the role attributed to the interviewer: either he was included in the speech scenario, or he was excluded from it, or he was not attributed a role in the scenario. The research showed that the act of begging, although it is against brazilian laws, it is legitimated by the people that beg; and even thought it is a paradox, it is used by them as a honesty indicator. It is also been identified in these people speechs, a series of resistance tools against the limitations and problems associated to living in the streets.

A netnographic study on the perception of beggars on a swedish internet forum

Barrington, Hilda, Sundkvist, Elin January 2019 (has links)
The aim of this study has been to highlight and describe the perceptions of beggars, by studying and analyzing empirical data collected through observing different threads on a Swedish discussion forum. We wanted to study how beggars are mentioned in the discussion forum to illustrate the opinions and perceptions. To analyze the data a qualitative method of meaning condensation were used. The result was analyzed from a perspective of deviant behavior and three theories: Goffman's theory about Stigma, Beckers labelling theory and the theory about the established and the outsiders by Elias. The results showed that beggars are categorized and described as criminals, misfits and frauds. The results also gave us the conclusion that there are negative attitudes towards beggars.

Os mendigos de likes

Lima, Letícia Vargas de 29 June 2015 (has links)
Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior / The subject and its relation with the social ties, its behaviours and habits, are deeplly recreated facing the changes brought up by internet. Therefore, it has been an important researching field, given that its impacts to subjectivity are impossible to avoid. In this context, specially on Facebook, one may find a subject who spends most of its time on-line in its sui generis condition: beggars of likes. A subject who begs, tries to attract by image (not always his image), who bargains, who makes a marketing of itself to be. Beg for what? Likes, followers, friends, atention, popularity... beg for love. Turning the atention to this subject, this research aims generally to understand the pathos which works as a trigger for the daily battle of the beggars of likes in a social net, aiming to reach its targets. To enter the virtual environments of the beggars of likes, we use the etnographic method as a standard. We used the main instrument of the etnography, the field diary, and its excelence in exploring the stranger. The data analysis, as well as all the conception of the research, has been sustained by the Freudian psychoanalytic theory and some detailed concepts from Lacan. We also used the clinical position of the Fundamental Psychopathology, given that it bends towards the pathos, main objective of this research. From the life in the field, we extract elements which were splitted in three topics which will be better worked on: the beggar of likes , the Add game and Bruna França: to be or not to be a fake . An etymological approach between the words virtual/pulse and like/mock made it possible to discuss these subjects, leading to the place of the subject nowadays, specially on-line. We noticed that, under other clothing and new contexts, the unconscient subject, derived from the pulse, keeps on searching for ways to fulfill its structural emptiness, which always leads in frustration. Beggars of likes, thanks to the peculiarities of their acting field, soon meet this devastating pleasure which holds them to a repetition which defines their pathos and their condition.

Depictions of beggars and begging. : A qualitative textual and content analysis of Dagens Nyheter debate articles between September 3rd,2010 and February 24th,2014.

Svensson, Josefina January 2014 (has links)
The aim with this study was to analyze and understand how begging is constructed as a social problem in Sweden between September of 2010 and the end of February in 2014 in debate articles in Dagens Nyheter. To do this I have chosen to use a social problems theory and critical discourse analysis to highlight some aspects in the process of defining the social problem. The study's main finding is that the construction of beggars and begging appears to be in a relatively extensive redefinition in the current situation. It is shown by, for example, a shift in focus in the discourse. For this reason, it is relevant for social work to examine how the construction progresses.

Sousa, Fernando Figueiredo de 13 December 2012 (has links)
Made available in DSpace on 2016-04-25T19:20:25Z (GMT). No. of bitstreams: 1 Fernando Figueiredo de Sousa.pdf: 733635 bytes, checksum: 85ab8a5ec8f155d7406fe37c93f05c6a (MD5) Previous issue date: 2012-12-13 / This paper seeks to study the text of Lk 6, 20-26, of the beatitudes and of the woes, seeing in this passage an example of the recuperation, analysis and recreation of Jesus words. In this resides one of the particularities of this text in the context of the New Testament, which places it, however, in the heart of a fundamental direction of the beginnings of Christianity, namely, the tradition that goes back to Jesus by the conservation and transmission of his teachings. The author of this paper proposes the study of this text in three aspects. The first is the study of the text in of itself, as a communicative unity. The second aspect is the verification of the literature that influenced the Lucan author in the construction of this text, especially the Q source, and its comparison with words of the beatitudes attributed to the poor present in the Gospel of Thomas and the letter of James. In the third aspect, the author s intention is to analyze the importance of the writer of the Lucan text, his interference and the use of the blessed are and the woe to for the community. He considers that one of the accomplishments of the beatitudes is the approximation to the table as the instauration of the Kingdom of God, that is, the rich who share their wealth with the beggars. In this way, it is possible to verify an important connection between sharing with the beggars and belonging to the community, as a key element to becoming part of the Kingdom of God, the central element Jesus life and preaching, proposed by the beatitudes according to Luke / A presente pesquisa se aproxima do texto de Lc 6,20-26, das bem-aventuranças e dos ais, vendo nessa passagem um exercício de recuperação, análise e recriação de palavras de Jesus.
