Bilingvismus ve Španělsku: španělština (kastilština) a baskičtina / Bilingualism in Spain: Spanish (Castilian) and Basque

The author of the thesis describes current tendences of the Castilian-basque bilingualism from the linguistic, social and political point of view. After the introduction to the general overview of the linguistic situation in Spain, the author geographically and historically specifies the Basque-speaking area and then she closely deals with the extension, typology, linguistic characteristics of the Basque language in comparison with the Castilian and its historical background. In the second part of the thesis focused on bilingualism, the author first generally identifies this phenomenon with the related problematic issues of its clasification and then she describes in details the bilingulistic scheme of the present Basque country, the evolution of the implementation of the Basque language into the school curriculum and its current position in education against the legislative background; later on the author defines linguistic models of the education system and programmes aimed to support the Basque language and culture in today´s Basque society. In the conclusion of the thesis, the author analyses her own qualitative research conducted among bilingual speakers in the Basque and Navarre Autonomous Communities. The thesis is written in Czech and contains a summary in Spanish.

Metodika jazykové výuky bilingvních dětí (případová studie) / Teaching methods for bilingual children (case study)

This diploma theses introduces case studies of bilingual children attending Czech School Without Borders, London (CSWBL) that focuses on their education in this supplementary school. The theoretical part determines the term bilingualism. The aim is to describe aspects of bilingualism in students of CSWBL and specifics of their education with consideration of their frequent mistakes. In one chapter we describe institutions providing education to bilingual children worldwide. Another chapter outlines curriculum of "Czech schools without borders", curriculum of CSWBL and worksheets used for classwork in CSWBL. We are aware that textbooks for bilingual speaker do not yet exist. Empiric part focuses on creation of educational materials for Reception and Year 1 classes, both based on curriculum of CSWBL. This material is used during the lessons and evaluated. We describe in total six Saturday lessons, which took place at school year 2015/16. The lessons were based on those materials we created. Whilst creating the education materials we got inspired by Czech language textbooks, Czech for foreigners textbooks, CSWBL archive and internet sources. This study investigates the patterns in nonword repetition performance of children with a developmental language disorder and bilingual children. It has been shown by previous research that both children with developmental language disorder and bilingual children tend to perform poorly in nonword repetition tasks. As these tasks are one of the tools often used for diagnosing markers of DLD in young children, diagnosing bilinguals with DLD proves to be difficult, since both of the groups exhibit a poor performance. An analysis of the patterns found in NWR performance of bilingual children and children with DLD might shed more light onto the issue. The study focuses on analysing the performance in a widely used assessment task - The Children's Test of Nonword Repetition. Three samples of data were analysed. The first sample of data consisted of monolingual English-speaking children diagnosed with a developmental language disorder. The second sample of data consisted of Czech-English bilingual children from international schools in Prague who started acquiring English at the time of birth, i.e. simultaneous bilinguals. The third and final sample consisted of Czech- English bilingual children from international schools in Prague who started acquiring English after one year of age, i.e. sequential bilinguals....

The proposed thesis treats the topic of multilingual language acquisition and the occurring language interference. It aims to demonstrate the negative language transfer by the means of the results of a field research. The theoretical part introduces and discusses relevant topics, such as language learning, language processing, bilingualism and multilingualism. Furthermore, it focuses on the character of language transfer itself. In the practical part, two hypotheses are presented, specifically "the interference of the dominant foreign language is considerably higher than the interference of the other language, i.e. L3" and "passive interference reaches a higher degree than the active one". Eventually, the results interpretation is presented and both the hypotheses are verified.

Basic reading skills in Czech language, bilingual primary school children This thesis focuses on reading issues in Czech language in bilingual school age children born and taught in Czech environment. The main aim is to map there reading and writing skills in Czech language of bilingual children who live and study at the primary school with one or both parents from foreign country. The theoretical part defines the different types of bilingualism. It introduces the current state of knowledge about its advantages and disadvantages define the specifics of our language and education system focusing on the problems of foreigners and bilingual children. The practical part presents a research study in which the author compares the performance of monolingual and bilingual children in test mapping a level of the basic reading and writing skills in Czech language. There were used tests such as test of reading with comprehension, reading of pseudowords, writing a dictation, and test of reading literacy with expert text. The dissertation thesis "How to use the potential of bilingual environment efficiently" endeavors to highlight bad as well as good practices in bilingual upbringing. Bilingualism represents at present a very topical issue. In connection with increasing globalization, the issue of learning of foreign languages is more and more emphasised. People living in mixed marriages have often no idea how to bring their children up. In many cases they take steps that lead to irreversible consequences. The theoretical part of the thesis gives a survey of bilingualism, the division and kinds of bilingualism and ways of its acquisiton. The theory is practically illustrated in the empirical part through various examples. 42 case studies have been carried out, which include characteristic and uncharacteristic respondents. The findings of the research are compared with the facts mentioned in the reference works. The aim of the dissertation thesis is to find out which educational methods should parents follow in bilingual education and which methods they should better avoid.

This Diploma thesis deals with the Spanish-English Bilingualism in the Context of California. It focuses on the theory of bilingualism in terms of linguistics, psycholinguistics and phenomena that occur in contact languages. Bilingualism is viewed from the complex perspective, so it is set in the context of reality in California. The thesis deals with social identity of Hispanic speakers and focuses on the causes of code - switching. It also presents demographic situation, language policy and its history, both in the context of California and the background of the legal framework and policies of the United States. The aim of this work is to create an overview of linguistic phenomena that occur in the situation of languages in contact and their characteristics, secondly to find arguments to demonstrate the advantages of bilingualism and general support and to determine the primary reasons why code - switching occurs.

The main aim of this thesis is to explain and describe the basic aspects of the language situation in Gibraltar. In the introduction is briefly summarized the cultural and historical context in which the question of Gibraltarian nationality and linguistic identity are developed. The theme of the other chapters is the issue of the concept itself. Llanito, Yanito or Gibberish are some of the terms that are used in linguistics to refer to a typical speech used by habitants of Gibraltar only. In this chapter are presented the linguistic theories on the origin and development of the specific terminology. The following chapter contains phonetic, morphosyntactic and lexical characteristics of the analysed language structure. The description of each plane is connected and put into the context. The fourth chapter explores the influence of the major European languages in Gibraltarian speech. Other chapters describe dictionaries Yanito and the influence of this language structure on literature and media. This thesis contains two sections: a theoretical section, as well as a section featuring qualitative research with interviews with parents and analysis of children's speeches. The author's aim in the theoretical part, based on previously published academic papers, is to describe what bilingualism is, as well as to describe all its accompanying phenomena. The author briefly describes different types of bilingualism, the acquisition of a mother tongue, and different strategies for both raising children bilingually and bilingual education. In the second chapter the author presents the project Czech School without Borders and introduces the institution Czech School Manchester chaired by Pavla Matásková which follows the idea of the former. The third chapter contains case studies introducing individual preschool pupils' language biographies and their communicative competencies in Czech. The last chapter then sums up and evaluates what methods and materials are used in Czech School Manchester.
