In vitro rectal transport and rectal ultrastructure in the desert locust (Schistocerca gregaria)Irvine, H. Barry January 1966 (has links)
The rectal pad of Schistocerca gregaria consists of a layer of large columnar epithelial cells and a layer of smaller oval-shaped cells. Both layers appear specialized for transport, as judged by the large number of mitochondria and membrane infoldings within the two cell types. The ultrastructure of the columnar epithelium and of the secondary cells is described as it appears under the electron microscope.
The ability of the rectum to transport water and salts was tested in vitro. Unlike the in vivo preparation, the rectum in vitro does not transport potassium and chloride and has only a limited ability to transport sodium and water against a gradient. Dinitrophenol (10⁻³M.), iodoacetate (10⁻²M.) and ouabain (10⁻²M.) abolish water and sodium transport. Potassium cyanide (10⁻²M.) and ouabain (10⁻³M.) do not appear to inhibit water or sodium transport. Iodoacetate (10⁻³M.) inhibits sodium transport but does not affect water transport. The in vitro rectum is dependent upon anaerobic respiration. The results are discussed in terms of a scheme presented for in vivo cellular function. (Phillips, 1965).

Psychobiographies typically explore and describe historically significant, extraordinary and enigmatic individuals' psychological development through the lens of psychological theory. The primary aim of this psychobiographical study was to explore and describe the developmental life stages of Margaret Hilda Thatcher (1925 - 2013) through the application of Erik Erikson's theory of Psychosocial Development. Erikson's theory takes a holistic, biopsychosocial approach to the lifelong development of the individual, emphasising ego development. A secondary objective was to clarify the propositions of Erikson's theory by applying it to Thatcher's life. Margaret Thatcher was the leader of the Conservative Party in Great Britain and was the first ever female British Prime Minister. As a political leader, she was driven by conviction and regarded as controversial in that she divided the opinion of the British people. She served as Prime Minister for three consecutive terms and was eventually ousted by her peers. After leaving office, she received the title of Baroness Thatcher of Kesteven and later became a member of the highest order of knighthood in England: The Order of the Garter. Psychobiographical research is qualitative and follows a single, case study approach. Through using a purposive sampling strategy, Thatcher was selected as a research subject on the basis of interest value and uniqueness. Data were selected from primary and secondary sources, enhancing the validity of the study, and were analysed according to Alexander's nine identifiers of salience within the conceptual framework derived from Erikson's theory. When considering the findings of the research, it became evident that Margaret Thatcher's development coincides with those constructs proposed in Erikson's theory, and thus emphasised its value in understanding human development. The findings from this psychobiographical study contributed to the understanding of Thatcher's life and are likely to stimulate further research in psychology.

Philosophiae Doctor - PhD / The main theoretical and empirical interest of this study is the critical examination of the life of David Cecil Oxford (D.C.O.) Matiwane. In it, I critically examine the politics of representing Matiwane’s life and the methods employed in such a discourse. I do this by focusing on the question of representation of political, social and economic struggles launched by D.C.O. Matiwane against segregation and apartheid in South Africa in the twentieth century. This study then questions the notion of creating a biographical supernarrative of his achievements. It confronts the binary approach in the representation of his life and argues that Matiwane’s life is an embodiment of various, even contradictory, philosophies. This study puts forward an argument that Matiwane's representation should be contextualised in relation to the struggles of his contemporaries, and that his narrative should not be seen as a product of a single political route. It unpacks various communal, individual, economic and political strategies employed by organisations and persons against apartheid and colonialism. It looks at how these strategies were implemented to overcome apartheid, and analyses how Matiwane's contribution is documented, especially in relation to contributions made by others. This research project also analyses how different layers and patterns in Matiwane's narrative
have been created in an attempt to present his auto/biography as a cohesive discourse in spite of fragmented archival and oral memory. It argues that his memory has been appropriated to pursue different political and personal ends. This study further asks the following question: to what extent and why have different political systems given Matiwane’s voice a platform or silenced his point of view? Are there trends in his representation compared to narratives of his contemporaries? What are the underlying reasons behind such trends, if any? Are there continuities or discontinuities in his representation? What were the ambiguities embedded in their struggles? This study evaluates factors that led to him being declared a persona non grata. It closely examines why and how Matiwane has been represented as a source of controversy, as a lone political activist and as a pragmatist.

Australian newspapers in recent years have increased significantly the column space devoted to obituaries. The Sydney Morning Herald, the Australian, the Age, the West Australian, the Herald Sun, the Canberra Times, the Advertiser, and the Courier-Mail now publish them in dedicated sections, often allocating an entire page to the obituary art. Their popularity in Australia follows a pattern established during the 1980s in Britain and the United States. Australian practice has been influenced in particular by developments in British journalism, which has seen a phenomenon described by the Wall Street Journal as an odd revival
the rebirth of long newspaper obituaries. In its first incarnation, the obituary can be traced to the newsbooks of England which appeared in the 1660s, during the Restoration. It flowered in the 18th century, in the first daily newspapers and magazines; it grew luxuriant, and sometimes ornate, in the 19th century; it became unfashionable and fell into some general neglect in the 20th. Then, with the appointment of reformist editors and, particularly in Britain, the publication of bigger newspapers by an industry no longer subjected to labour restraint, the obituary itself experienced restoration. Though the momentum of renewed practice has been of mutual rapidity on three continents, there are some significant variations in its application. The American product generally favours a style faithful to news-writing principles so far as timing and content are concerned and is frequently expansive when relating the details of surviving family and funeral arrangements. In Britain, the emphasis is more on creative composition and a recitation of anecdotes, with less of a sense of urgency about news value and a consequent accent on character sketch. Both models, in recent years, have displayed a propensity for explicit appraisal and an increasing willingness to publish obituaries of those who have undermined, rather than adorned, society. Newspapers in Australia, while adopting the obituary with apparent fervour, have found their delivery of the product restrained by a lack of resources. Obituary desks in this country are staffed by a solitary journalist-editor. This has resulted in a reliance, often to an unhealthy degree, on contributions by readers. The tone of this material, with its intimacy of address and excess in sentiment, sits uneasily when appearing on the same page as obituaries syndicated from overseas sources. Contemporary obituary publication in the United States has been subjected to some scholarly analysis in terms of gender balance, identification of cause of death, and the demographic mix of its subject selection. This thesis, by means of a six-month content analysis, addresses such questions for the first time in an Australian context. In addition, it examines issues of style, origin and authorship. It finds that cause of death is identified much less than is the case in American obituary practice, that women are significantly under-represented, and that editing is sometimes haphazard. Nevertheless, the accumulated body of evidence points resolutely to a remarkable reinvigoration of practice in Australias daily newspapers. The thesis, by discussing the views of specialists in the field of obituary publication, pursues mechanisms for sustaining the momentum and for improving the product.

Understanding adolescent sexuality in the memories of four female Basotho teachers : an auto/biographical study.Motalingoane-Khau, Mathabo Senkepeng Crescentia. January 2007 (has links)
This study explores the memories of adolescent sexual experiences of female Basotho
science teachers in order to understand the influence of such experiences on their
approach and handling of sexuality, HIV and AIDS education. My argument is that
Basotho teachers arc facing a challenge of integrating sexuality, HIV and AIDS
education into their teaching largely because of their lived sexuality experiences, which
have been shaped institutionally and through societal expectations. An eclectic theoretical
approach, with emphasis on feminism and involving Dewey's philosophies of experience
informed the study. A qualitative research design was used. Data was produced through
one-on-one semi-structured interviews, focus group discussions and memory work with
three participants. I was a participant-researcher and hence contributed my experiences to
the study. Field notes and journal entries were used to supplement the data. The storied
lives of the women teachers have been shared in their own words including the
researcher's autobiography.
The findings show that the adolescent sexual experiences of the women teachers have
shaped their teacher selves within sexuality, HIV and AIDS classrooms. Some of their
experiences have been educative while others have been mis -educative, and thus have led
to some of the teachers not being able to handle sexuality education at all, while others
only handle it partially. Several stumbling blocks have been identified that impede the
effective facilitation of sexuality education in Lesotho classrooms. These include religion,
traditional practices, lack of training and societal constructions of what is and is not
permissible in schools. Challenging and disturbing these stumbling blocks and breaking
the silence around sexuality issues among Basotho societies could be helpful in ensuring
that 8asotho teachers gain the skill s necessary for them to facilitate the teaching of sexuality, HIV and AIDS education. Thus, Basotho children would be given the knowledge necessary for them to make informed decisions regarding their sexual
