Different Perspectives on the Boomerang: How Adult Daughters and their Parents Experience the Move Back Home

Kruck, Lauren Michelle 20 October 2015 (has links)
Though the phenomenon of young adults moving in with their parents is not a new one, it is one that has certainly become more common in recent decades. A new life stage of 'emerging adulthood' has become the norm, in which young adults delay marriage and career jobs in order to pursue other goals. This stage is, in part, marked by fluidity in residence. Yet even as a growing number of 'boomerang kids' move back in with their parents, there is a gap in the research regarding this phenomenon's effect on various parts of the family system. This study set out to address this gap by comparing separate interviews from young adult boomerangs and their parents. Findings suggest a disparity between parental and young adult opinions on a variety of topics, most notably: expected household responsibility, parent/child closeness, loss of autonomy, and appreciation. However, similarities emerged regarding the parental home as a safe haven, the arrangement as providing financial security, and the fact that all adult children reported being ready to move out. Ideally, the findings presented here will help illuminate both the similarities and disparities in the experiences of parents and their young adult children who return after launch, in order to increase empathy and promote a healthy family system. / Master of Science

Studium analytického chování rozptylových veličin v nelokálním rezonančním modelu / Study of analytic behavior of scattering quantities in the nonlocal resonance model

Bednařík, Lukáš January 2013 (has links)
In the presented thesis we study analytical behavior of vibrational excitation cross sections and probability flux density in nonlocal resonance model. An analytical formula for determining the shape of Wigner cusps from three complex parameters is derived. The results of this formula are compared to numerical calculations with complex scaling method and interpreted within Feynman approach to quantum mechanics. Furthermore, we derive nonlocal continuity equation and show how it implies the multichannel optical theorem. Detail analysis of fluxes in the nonlocal resonance model is used to accelerate the convergence of formula for the dissociative attachment cross section and we present a simple model describing boomerang oscillations. A program in Fortran language is attached to this work. The program allows calculation of vibrational excitation and dissociative attachment cross sections, flux divergences and other quantities specified in this text.

Combined Attacks On Block Ciphers

Oztop, Nese 01 August 2009 (has links) (PDF)
Cryptanalytic methods are very important tools in terms of evaluating the security of block ciphers in a more accurate and reliable way. Differential and linear attacks have been the most effective cryptanalysis methods since the early 1990s. However, as the technology developed and more secure ciphers are designed, these fundamental methods started to be not so efficient. In order to analyze the ciphers, new methods should be introduced. One approach is inventing new techniques that are different from the existing ones. Another approach is extending or combining known cryptanalytic methods to analyze the cipher in a different way. This thesis is a survey of the attacks that are generated by combination of existing techniques and their applications on specific block ciphers. Mentioned attacks are namely differential-linear, differential-bilinear, higher order differential-linear, differential-nonlinear, square-nonlinear, impossible differential and boomerang type attacks.

Internationalisation of the National Aspirations of the Palestinian Arab Citizens of Israel

Shahbari, Ilham January 2019 (has links)
This study is concerned with the concept of internationalisation as a tool for disadvantaged minorities to affect change in their situation. This phenomenon has been studied widely with respect to authoritarian regimes and later on with liberal Western democracies. The current study has focussed on the state of Israel and the situation of its Palestinian Arab minority to investigate the origins and purposes of internationalisation, the extent to which these efforts have achieved the objectives that were set, and whether this process is in any sense capable of achieving them. The analysis shows that the internationalisation process whereby the Palestinian Arab citizens of Israel sought to reclaim their rights by invoking the support of the international community has emerged in the 1950s. It came to be perceived as necessary because internal legal and political processes were understood to be insufficient to achieve any redress for their grievances. The Arab leadership in Israel articulates internationalisation as a strategy designed to invoke the norms of democracy to question the conduct of successive Israeli governments, and counter the narrative offered by them on the world stage. The internationalisation strategy is seen to undergo a profound transformation from public memoranda, to civil and legal advocacy by invoking international conventions and treaties and finally to personal diplomacy. The results show that it is not a zero sum game; it is an especially effective method in different ways and with varying degrees of success. It created an extension of the critique of Israel’s treatment of Palestinians in the Occupied Territories to its Palestinian minority. Using the international law in the modality of legal advocacy to compel the Israeli state to adhere to the commitments it had made by acceding to an international convention, proved more effective than mere political pressure. Another factors such as the nature of the claims, geopolitical circumstances, global momentum, and domestic politics are crucial as well for the success of the internationalisation. Yet, Israel’s response varied in particular cases to minimise external critics, and its respect for the international law was uttered by utilitarian justification to protect its reputation. The application of the social constructivist boomerang-spiral model to the process of internationalisation is deemed to be a particularly effective instrument to explore both the potential and the limits of the process of compelling the Israeli state to conform to internationally supported norms. The results of this study demonstrate that the construction of the state’s identity as a Jewish and concerns over national security are potentially in conflict with the egalitarian democratic norms that it claims to be governed by. The implications of these two elements for the operation of the Israeli state has resulted in a failure to fully integrate its Arab citizens. The Nation-State Law of 2018 reinforces the legal and systematic discrimination against the Palestinians in Israel and explains why internationalisation has not been successful. 443 It is the first comprehensive investigation into a selected series of case studies that document international appeals made by Israel’s Arab elite due to three chronological periods: 1948-1979, 1992- 2013 and 2015 onwards. On a theoretical level, it is the first time that the spiral model has been tested in the context of Israel and its Arab minority. This can serve as a strategic information source for Arab MKs, NGOs and Israeli decision makers.

Dodržování lidských práv na Kubě: Působení opozičního hnutí / Human rights in Cuba: Influence of the Cuban opposition movement

Kolářová, Zuzana January 2012 (has links)
The central topic of the thesis is the Cuban pro-democracy opposition movement and its activities towards an official regime of Raul Castro. This is to try and achieve improvements in civil and political rights in Cuba. The opposition tools and strategies are analysed in the context of specific conditions of the current repressive Cuban regime. Special attention is dedicated to framing processes towards the local audience, communication strategies oriented to an international society, and an ability to involve external players to participate in effective pressure from outside; the so called boomerang effect. The movement's progress is displayed on a base of particular achievements as well as challenges faced in a long term pursuit to a democratic transition of the country.

Armijo Fortin, Alexandra 01 1900 (has links)
What is the power of international human rights norms ? Do those norms have the capacity to change the political course of a State ? More precisely, can they contribute to a better human rights protection and the democratization of a State ? This thesis tackles these questions and tries to figure out how the international human rights norms are participating to the political evolution of a country. Examining the case of Mexico, this thesis seeks to provide answers to three main questions. The first one is related to the path followed by norms : are the domestic human rights groups bypassing their State to search out international allies to bring pressure on the government, as suggested by the boomerang model, or are they able to display effective pressure for human rights changes? This thesis also tries to understand the impact of human rights groups on human rights domestic changes : are the international and national human rights groups able to bring out domestic human rights changes ? Finally, the impact of human rights groups on democratization is examined : do international and national human rights groups play a role within the democratization of the mexican State ? The analysis of data helps to draw the appropriate conclusions. First, the thesis argues that domestic human rights groups are using the boomerang effect, seeking international allies in Mexico to put effective pressure on their gouvernment. Indeed, the human rights domestic pressure became effective only when the international community started to get involved in the protection of human rights in Mexico. Secondly, it shows that international and national human rights groups have been efficient in encouraging the Mexican government to adopt human rights policies between 1988 and 2006. As the human rights sector expanded in Mexico, the government has put into place many reforms and institutions to promote human rights.

Information privacy on internet is one of the biggest concerns that arise with web 2.0. However, it is increasingly common for companies that use Recommendation Systems (RS) the request and manage of personal data aiming to guarantee personalized services or products to the users. However, consumers often face a privacy-personalization paradox because they need to provide information, but fear how companies will use it. Incoherent use of such data can give to the individual the feeling that their freedom is being curtailed, causing reactions differently than the system’s intention. It is a boomerang effect, understood as an opposed response to the threat of its freedom on the web. Considering that the IS literature insufficiently explores the effects of the perception of intrusion on the willingness to disclose information, especially through the theory of psychological reactance – where the boomerang effect comes from – the objective of this research is to verify how the users' perception of the intrusion of the Recommendation System may affect your willingness to disclose your information. Two experiments were conducted in the United States and Brazil, with valid samples of 213 and 237 participants, respectively. A prototype of an Experimental Recommendation System (ERS) was developed on the Qualtrics platform. The techniques used for data analysis were the analysis of one-way variance (one-way ANOVA) and covariance analysis (ANCOVA). Among the results, the boomerang effect of RS was demonstrated, because the higher the level of SR intrusion, the less is the willingness to disclose its information. It was verified the existence of only two levels of intrusion perceived by the user. The impact of Internet privacy concerns on the relationship between perception of intrusion and willingness to disclose information was verified, as well as the behavioral indifference between the two samples. Based on the results, RS developers and companies that use them are expected to avoid future boomerang effects in their recommendations, which would scare away a potential customer.

[en] THE TRANSNATIONAL ADVOCACY NETWORK AGAINST THE APARTHEID IN SOUTH AFRICA / [pt] A REDE DE ATIVISMO TRANSNACIONAL CONTRA O APARTHEID NA ÁFRICA DO SUL

PABLO DE REZENDE SATURNINO BRAGA 28 September 2018 (has links)
[en] The case of apartheid in South Africa was unique because it institutionalized an socio-juridical arrangement diametrically opposite to the norms which has framed the gestation of the international order after World War II. The remarkable contradiction catalyzed a chain reaction in fighting the South-African regime, and the anti-apartheid activism could operate one of the most dynamic transnational advocacy networks, developing channels of dialogue and a wide range of strategies to combat on domestic, regional and international spheres. This study - anchored in the constructivist literature on transnational activism - will discuss the formalization and operation of the antiapartheid transnational advocacy network and its operational tools, like the boomerang pattern, by analyzing its influence on the implementation of economic, strategic and social sanctions against the South African segregationist regime.
