Governance of the German Green Belt ecological network

Shim, Suk Kyung 13 June 2012 (has links)
The German Green Belt (GB) is a 1,398km long, valuable ecological network along the former border between East and West Germany, created in late 1989 as an outcome of the Cold War. The exemplary project for the conservation of the German GB not only inspired the development of the European GB along the whole former Iron Curtain in Europe, but has also received great interest from Korea for the policy-learning applicable to the conservation of the Korean Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) after the eventual unification of North and South Korea. However, the German GB has often suffered threats to its conservation, and has witnessed conflicts among involved actors, which were closely related to social and political factors such as the post-reunification policy environment, in addition to ecological factors. The present study intends to address the above challenges as well as to understand the evolution of the conservation framework of the German Green Belt using the governance approach, since the concept of governance is instrumental in understanding a complex socio-ecological system through interdisciplinary study. The governance analysis framework for the research was formulated in specific consideration of scale (ecological network) and external policy environment (relevant socio-political context). The data collected from semi-structured interviews as well as other various sources were used for analysis. Based on a critical understanding of the German GB governance, the present study identifies the main features of its evolution and its success factors and challenges and recommends the desirable changes in the governance for the successful conservation of the German GB. The analysis results also provide useful implications for the Korean DMZ conservation. As an empirical study of biodiversity governance, the present study also contributes to the discourse on biodiversity governance, particularly on its scale- and context-specific considerations.

January 2009 (has links)

Reterritorialization of the Western Ukraine Borderlands. The Case Study of Lviv Oblast.

Seidlová, Alexandra January 2018 (has links)
The Diploma is focused on the EU's external borders impact on the border area of Lviv. Both local and regional level of social and economic development of the border area and its relations with Poland and EU are examined in the context of political development from the beginning of independent Ukraine until presents. Mixed-Methods approach has been applied as it allows case studies to be set in a wider context. Structural and regional disparities of the development are observed by methods of quantitative analysis and Descriptive Statistics. Qualitative Research is applied to analyse a cognitive role of the border. From the political point of view, the development of Eastern European border area is controlled by European Neighbourhood Policy (ENP) and related EU regional political initiative. In the Western Ukrainian regions these are mainly represented by micro-projects focused on local problems and their solutions and intensification of the local cross-border cooperation development. Statistical analysis states that remarkable economic development has not reached the required level yet. However, the increasing social and infrastructural potential ushers in its rise in the future. Key words: Ukraine, border area of Lviv, border impact, cross-border cooperation, European Neighbourhood Policy (ENP)

In Brazil, the creation and implementation of the Federal University of Latin American Integration (UNILA), had in its design principles of respect for cultural diversity and the integration of Latin America. In 2014, UNILA had 1356 students enrolled from eleven different nationalities. This study aimed to analyze the adjustment of the students of the Federal University of Latin American Integration (UNILA) in Foz do Iguaçu and the social interactions among Brazilian and foreign students, and between them and the local population. It is an exploratory and transversal research, with quantitative and qualitative nature. As methodology, a semi-structured questionnaire containing objective questions (scored according to a Likert scale) and open ones were used. The objective questions were analyzed quantitatively (percentage and mean calculation) and qualitative responses were analyzed using content analysis method and identification of categories. In this study, 425 students were surveyed, between Brazilian and foreign, representing a probabilistic sample of the student population of UNILA. In addition, an intentional sample of 50 residents of Foz do Iguaçu was also selected to answer the questionnaire, seeking to obtain the perception of the population regarding the UNILA students. As overall results, the survey of the population of Foz do Iguaçu highlighted vulnerabilities in the relationship between city population and students of UNILA and validate some of the assumptions about the positive opinion of the population ranging from the economic benefits generated by installation of a university in the city until the aspects of integration and interaction between people of different nationalities. However, these social relations could also be subject to the categorizations that relate students of UNILA to deviant behavior, indicating possible manifestation of a stigmatization process of the population in relation to these students. A survey of foreign and Brazilians students highlights generally prejudice reports by the population of Foz do Iguaçu, and for the two groups of students, the most cited stress factors were tensions with the police, xenophobia and hostility of the population. Regarding factors that facilitated the adaptation of foreign students in the city, friendships and other categories related to interpersonal relationships and structural factors of support, and Brazilian students cited mainly the classes and daily living as facilitating factors of integration with foreign students. It stands out in the research, the prevalence of the median satisfaction of students with the life in general in Foz do Iguaçu, but a lot of satisfaction with academic life at UNILA, and as noted, the difficulties of coexistence with the local population. Of women in judo clubs management : glass ceiling and gender social relationships in the Catalan cross-border area

Leglise, Eva 09 October 2017 (has links)
For the past few years, successive governments and national sports associations have developed a proactive policy as regards equality and parity in sports. What is the real impact of these schemes, actions and recommendations? Jointly carried out in the Pyrénées-Orientales (French region of Languedoc-Roussillon) and within the Autonomous Community of Gerone (Calalonia), our study concentrates on volunteer women’s access to positions of responsibility in local sports clubs. Using the results of a field study made in the Catalan cross-border area, this thesis provides a comprehensive assessment of the position and experience of women leaders in judo clubs. We consider that this comparison is relevant both on scientific and political levels since it allows to understand cultural continuities of gender relations in sports. Moreover, we will also consider the differences linked to the national background and to the consequences of public policies. From monographs of clubs chosen on both sides of the border, we will try and describe the positions and career paths of women managers, but also how their volunteer investment was sometimes held back. In this respect, not only we will compare how these women have reached their leading positions (career, family life, sport capital, clubs operation…) but also we will understand how they themselves consider their duties. Given a fierce competition strongly associated with the values of virility, how do women succeed in breaking the glass ceiling? Is it possible to distinguish between enabling factors or identical brakes, according to the country?Eventually, this thesis provides a combined analysis of gender social relations in sports clubs and a comparison to better understand the respective consequences of political and institutional contexts on the purpose of this study.

Le Comité flamand de France, une société savante frontalière et régionaliste, 1853-1940 / The « Comité flamand de France », a border and regionalist « learned society », 1853-1940

Van Robais, Solange 19 October 2010 (has links)
Is it a classic « learned society » created in 1853, or does its border situation provide it another interest? Edmond de Coussemaker, the music lover magistrate and the others fonders living in Dunkerque, were committed to preserving and maintaining the vestiges of their ancient vernacular, the "Flemish in France",participating in the movement of 'local memories'. These local dignitaries, with the help of village priests, wished to serve the Christian society, therein inspired both by the traditions of medieval towns of the Low Countries later on regained by the Spanish catholic reform and the opposition to anticlerical centralism inherited from the Revolution. They associated the vernacular with the catholic religion, as part of a French identity, to distinguish themselves, both from Paris and from their Belgian-Flemish neighbors, and also to submit the challenges of modernity. Once attracted by the Flemish neogothicism and neomedieval ideology, they joined, painfully for some, the integration project of "small countries" in the great nation-state, as conceived by the Third Republic, even though this regime was not favourable towards these elites which were considered reactionary. The reconstruction of this region, near the front, after the First World War, gave the canon Looten during his long presidency, the opportunity to play very subtly, sometimes ambiguously, a role in the organization of typically northern type of regionalism. While ensuring the promotion of the vernacular at the “Facultés catholiques de Lille”, with his friend Jules Lemire, he aims at driving religion in a direction of transcendence as well as larger opening to the word and its social problems.
