Parents and Peers as Restrictors of Opportunities: A Test of the General Theory of Crime

Kuhn, Emily 20 May 2011 (has links)
According to the General Theory of Crime, lower self-control individuals with sufficient opportunities are most likely to engage in crime or analogous acts. This study tested three hypotheses drawn from the General Theory of Crime. Specifically, this study tested the low selfcontrol to rule-breaking behavior association, self-selection and tested restricted or enhanced opportunities as moderators of the low self-control and rule-breaking link. Early adolescents reported their self-control, unsupervised time, parental solicitation, rules, affiliation with antisocial peers and rule-breaking behavior. Parents reported their perceptions of adolescents' rule-breaking. Lower self-control was associated with more adolescent- but not parent-reported rule-breaking. Lower self-control was linked to more rule-breaking behavior indirectly through unsupervised time, parental solicitation and antisocial peers. Lower self-control was more strongly associated with rule-breaking at higher, as compared to lower, levels of opportunities. Results clarify and extend understanding of the role of restricted or enhanced opportunities in the General Theory of Crime.

Exploring Catalytic Tellurium-Based Antioxidants : Synthesis and Evaluation

Poon, Jia-fei January 2016 (has links)
This thesis is concerned with the synthesis and evaluation of various tellurium-based chain-breaking antioxidants. The purpose is to find novel regenerable compounds with improved radical-trapping capacity. In the first part of this work, we explore the possibilities to incorporate tellurium into tocopherols and aromatic amines. Overall, tocopherols carrying alkyltelluro groups are better radical-trapping agents than the corresponding sulfur- and selenium analogues. Among them, 7-octyltelluro δ-tocopherol showed a ca. 17-fold higher reactivity than recorded for α-tocopherol and much better regenerability. Even longer inhibition times were recorded for the corresponding bis(tocopheryl) tellurides. In the aromatic amine series, diphenyl amines carrying alkyltelluro groups were shown to function as efficient radical-quenchers capable of inhibiting peroxidation for 460 min in the presence of N-acetylcysteine. Thiol-consumption experiments suggested that the long inhibition times are due to efficient quenching of in-situ formed alkoxyl radicals in a solvent cage. In the second part of the thesis, we study how the antioxidant properties are affected by variations in the electron density at tellurium and the number of alkyltelluro substituents in the molecule. Evaluation of a series of aryltelluro phenols carrying electron donating and electron withdrawing groups in the para-position of the aryl moiety suggested that a high electron density at the heteroatom prolonged the inhibition time. Among alkyltelluro phenols, alkyltelluro resorcinols and bis(alkyltelluro) phenols, phenols carrying alkyltelluro groups in both ortho positions were superior when it comes to radical-trapping activity and regenerability.

Hydrodynamique extrême en mer près des côtes. / Extreme Hydrodynamic in coastal environment

Robin, Pauline 18 July 2013 (has links)
During extreme weather events like cyclones and storms, the extreme states sea withimportant breaking cause a level setup and coastal flooding magnified by strong wind and can cause human and material damage (Xynthia, february 2010).Initially, the aim of this work is to understand the hydrodynamics mechanisms when storms. To understand this, a measurement campaign was carried out in large air/sea facility at Marseille Luminy. The objective was to quantify maximum runup due to the wind and waves during onshore wind (up to 15m/s) for different conditions of waves (regular, irregular or only wind) and also to know the effect of wind on the waves characteristics and currents near the shore.A Boussinesq-type model in time domain has been developed taking into account the combined effects of wave/wind/breaking. The model that we use is based on the model developed by Bingham et al. (2009). It incorporates a variable bathymetry to simulate the propagation of the waves from offshore to the coastal environment. Amplification of waves by wind is added in two different ways. Jeffreys (1925, 1926), Miles (1957) and to take into account the dissipation of wave, we included a dissipation term, Madsen et al. (1997a), Muscari and Di Mascio (2002). Finally, we introduced the simple runup model of Hibberd et Peregrine (1979), Lynett et al. (2002). In order to validate the model, we have compared our results with differents experiments.

Sjuksköterskors erfarenheter av att delge negativa besked : En integrerad kunskapsöversikt / Nurses’ experiences towards breaking bad news : An integrative review

Olofsson, Malin, Forsberg, Albin January 2019 (has links)
The event of breaking bad news is a subject that no one present in the practical setting could choose to avoid. It is a subject that the practitioners comes in touch with during a daily basis. Traditionally the role as the breaker of bad news has been settled by the physician, but at the time being, disagreements occur in the clinical setting about who should break bad news to familys and patients. Aim: The aim of this study was to explore the nurses’ experiences of breaking bad news. What are the nurses’ role in the event of breaking bad news, and are there any barriers that can affect the way the bad news is given to the patients and family members? These were two questions of issue that were looked into. Method: The integrative review method based out of Whittemore and Knafl (2005) was used for this review. A systematic search resulted in twelve articles that were deemed fitting for the purpose of this study. Results: This integrative review resulted in five identified roles carried out by the nurse in the event of breaking bad news. Further on, nine factors were identified as being of significance in how the bad news were delivered by nurses and received by patients and the patient’s family members. Nurses expressed a desire and a wish for some kind of education or training in how to break bad news. Conclusion: This article contributes with five roles experienced by nurses, along with nine different factors to have in mind when carrying out difficult news. The SPIKE model and Gibbs reflective model were discussed to have a great importance in the clinical setting.

Eficiência reprodutiva de búfalas leiteiras submetidas a protocolos de IATF à base de P4/E2 e eCG durante as estações reprodutivas favorável e desfavorável / Reproductive performance of dairy buffaloes submitted to TAI protocols based on P4/E2 and eCG during breeding and nonbreeding seasons

Monteiro, Bruno Moura 17 April 2015 (has links)
No D-3 (16:00 h), as fêmeas receberam 0,53 mg de PGF2α i.m. (Cloprostenol, Sincrocio®, Ourofino Agronegócio) e 400 UI de eCG i.m. / This thesis aimed to compare the follicular and luteal dynamics (Experiment 1) and reproductive efficiency (Experiment 2) of dairy buffaloes submitted to TAI protocols based on progesterone/estrogen (P4/E2) and eCG during the breeding (On-BS; May, June and July) and nonbreeding seasons (Off-BS; November, December and January). In Experiment 1, 51 dairy buffalo of one farm were used, and in Experiment 2, 351 dairy buffaloes of 5 farms were used. To compare the effect of BS, each property had similar number of animals submitted to TAI in each, both in Experiment 1 (n = 25 vs. n = 26) as in Experiment 2 (n = 168 vs. n = 183). All properties were located in the Vale do Ribeira, State of São Paulo, Brazil. On random days of the estrous cycle (D-12; 4:00 PM), all buffaloes received an intravaginal device containing 1 g of P4 (Sincrogest®, Ourofino Agronegócio) plus 2.0 mg of estradiol benzoate im (Sincrodiol®, Ourofino Agronegócio). On D-3 (4:00 PM), females received 0.53 mg of PGF2α im (Cloprostenol, Sincrocio®, Ourofino Agronegócio) and 400 IU of eCG im (Novormon®, MSD Animal Health), followed by removal of progesterone device. On D-1 (4:00 PM), 10 mg of buserelin acetate (GnRH Sincroforte®, Ourofino Agronegócio) were administered im. The TAI was performed 16 hours after application of GnRH (D0; 8:00 AM). At the beginning of each protocol (D-12), it was recorded the number of days in milk (DIM) and body condition score of females (BCS, 1-5). Ultrasonography (Chison D600Vet, China) were performed in Experiment 1 to determine: the diameter of the dominant follicle between withdraw of iP4 and TAI (ØDF), the diameter of the ovulatory follicle (ØOF), the time of ovulation, the dispersion of ovulation, and the presence and diameter of the corpus luteum (ØCL) after ovulation. In Experiment 2, was determined cyclicity rate (the presence of corpus luteum in the D-12 and/or D-3), diameter of the dominant follicle in the D-3 and D0 (ØDF), ovulation rate, diameter of the corpus luteum 10 days after artificial insemination (ØCL D+10); pregnancy rates to 30 (P/AI 30 d) and 45 days (P/AI 45 d) after TAI, embryonic mortality (EM) between 30 and 45 days, fetal mortality (FM) between 45 days and birth, and pregnancy loss (PL) between 30 days and birth. Continuous variables were presented as mean and standard error of the mean (mean±SEM) and frequencies as a percentage [% (n/n)]. The comparison between variables was performed through analysis of variance (ANOVA) using the SAS® program. Difference was considered when P < 0.05. In Experiment 1, it was found that the ovarian dynamics was not influenced by the respective On-BS and Off-BS for the following variables: ØDF (0 h 10.3±0.4 vs. 9.9±0.5 mm; 24 h 11.8±0.5 vs. 12.0±0.4; 48 h 12.8±0.5 vs. 13.2±0.4; and 60 h 13.8±0.6 vs. 13.1±0.5; P = 0.80); ØOF (14.3 ± 0.4 vs. 14.2 ± 0.3 mm; P = 0.94); timing of ovulation (76.5 ± 1.9 vs. 72.0 ± 2.5 h; P = 0.85); dispersion of ovulations (24 |- 48 h 0.0 vs. 0.0%; 48 |- 60 h 12.5 vs. 37.5%; 60 |- 72 h 41.7 vs. 33.3%; 72 |- 84 h 41.7 vs. 25.0%; 84 |- 96 h 4.2 vs. 0.0%; and 96 |- 108 h 0.0 vs. 4.2%; P = 0.18) and ØCL (D+6 17.3±0.5 vs. 16.9±0.4; D+10 21.5±0.6 vs. 18.4±0.5; and D+14 20.6±0.6 vs.19.9±0.6; P = 0.06). In Experiment 2, it was observed that despite the similarity of DIM (111.1 ± 8.8 vs. 144.3 ± 8.6 d, P = 0.27) and BCS (3.3 ± 0.0 vs. 3.3 ± 0.0; P = 0.41) on respective On-BS Off-BS, buffalo females showed different cyclicity rates [76.2 (128/168) vs. 42.6% (78/183); P = 0.02]. None of the other answers differ between On-BS and Off-BS respectively: ØDF D-3 (9.6 ± 0.2 vs. 9.8 ± 0.2 mm; P = 0.35); ØDF D0 (13.1 ± 0.2 vs. 13.2 ± 0.2 mm; P = 0.47); ovulation rate [86.9 (146/168) vs. 82.9% (152/182); P = 0.19]; ØCL + D 10 (19.0 ± 0.3 vs. 18.4 ± 0.3 mm, P = 0.20); P/AI d 30 [66.7 (112/168) vs. 62.7% (111/177); P = 0.31]; P/AI d 45 [64.8 (107/165) vs. 60.2% (106/176); P = 0.37]; EM [1,8 (2/111) vs. 3.6% (4/110); P = 0.95]; FM [21.9 (18/82) vs. 8.0% (7/87); P = 0.13]; and PL [23.8 (20/84) vs. 12.1% (11/91); P = 0.13]. It was concluded that dairy buffaloes have similar responses to ovarian synchronization protocol and equivalent reproductive efficiency during OnBS and OffBS, when subjected to TAI programs based on P4 / E2 and eCG.

O dílaton em teorias quiver de hierarquia completa / The dilaton in full hierarchy quiver theories

Cano, Victor Manuel Peralta 04 June 2012 (has links)
The standard model of particle physics successfuly describes the electroweak and strong interactions when compared with all the experimental data we have until now. However, it has problems regarding the origin of electroweak symmetry breaking as well as the hierarchy of fermion masses. The solutions of both these problems require the generation of large stable hierarchies. These can be obtained in a class of four-dimensional quiver theories called full-hierarchy quiver theories, which are related to extra dimensional theories in AdS, in the large-number-ofsites limit. We show that, just as in curved extra dimensional theories, there is a light degree of freedom associated with the breaking of scale invariance, which can be identied with a dilaton. Starting from an extra dimensional theory in an AdS5 background, we show how this light dilaton can be obtained in full-hierarchy quiver theories as well.

Eletrodinâmica quântica sem massa nua do elétron: um estudo variacional / Quantum electrodynamics without bare mass electron: a variational study

Piquini, Paulo Cesar 20 September 1990 (has links)
The variational method was used to study the possibility of existence of a composed vacuum of the Quantum Electrodynamics. An ansatz containing a condensate of electron-positron pairs was investigated and an optimization equation for the condensate wave function was encountered. The renormalization prescription used broke the scale symmetry initially present in the Lagrangian. Once more the optimization equation was derived. This time this was done by the resolution of Schwinger-Dyson equation to the electron self energy. An expression to the dynamically generated mass of the electron, in terms of the condensate wave function, was presented, as well as the mass parameter dependence of the coupling constant. Our calculations, however, lead us to conclude that the existence of such composed vacuum of the Quantum Electrodynamics is not possible, at least within our approach.

Quebra dinâmica de simetria, simetria BRST e finitude em modelos supersimétricos em (2+1)D / Dynamical symmetry breaking, BRST symmetry and finiteness of supersymmetric models in (2 + 1) D

Cavalcante, Roberto Vinhaes Maluf 04 December 2012 (has links)
In this work we study three different aspects involving supersymmetry in the context of quantum field theory in $(2+1)$ space-time dimensions. We consider first the possibility of dynamical supersymmetry breaking in the Wess-Zumino model, calculating the effective potential up to two loops. We found that the vacuum state remains supersymmetric and the dynamical generation of mass together with the discrete symmetry breaking are not perturbatively consistent. Next, we turn our attention to the analysis of the Slavnov-Taylor identities in the noncommutative supersymmetric electrodynamics. The transversality of the vacuum polarization is verified explicitly in the one loop approximation with the conclusion that no anomaly is introduced by the noncommutativity or the regularization scheme adopted in the superfields formalism. Finally, the ultraviolet behavior for supersymmetric Yang-Mills-Chern-Simons theory minimally coupled to matter superfields is investigated. We verify that the model is superenormalizable and that the divergent terms persist only in the gauge superfield self-energy diagrams up to two-loop.

Det dubbla uppdraget : Hur samhällskunskapslärare arbetar med normer och mot normbrytande beteende i skolans verksamhet / The twofold purpose : How civics teachers work with norms and against norm-breaking behaviour in school

Larsson, Johan, Sandberg, Marcus January 2019 (has links)
The aim of this study is to examine civic teacher’s perception of the twofold purpose of the Swedish education system. The duality consists of supplying subject knowledge to the pupils and at the same time mediate norms and values specified in the regulatory documents for Swedish upper secondary school. Furthermore, this study aims to contribute to the already existing body of work detailing how teachers view norm-breaking behavior in education. The study is based on a phenomenographic analysis of semi structured interviews conducted with nine civics teachers in upper secondary school. The study revolves around three fundamental questions: 1) how do teachers view the twofold purpose within the regulatory documents, 2) how do they handle pupils that exhibit norm-breaking behavior and 3) how do teachers contribute to the making of good citizens. The material retrieved from the interviews was arranged using a seven step phenomenographic method which resulted in the creation of three general themes based on the aim of the study. The results show there is a wide range of perceptions among civic teachers on the twofold purpose of the Swedish educational system. No unified view on norm-breaking behavior could be found and neither a unified way of dealing with such. The results show us that teachers use a plethora of ways to deal with normbreaking behavior depending on what type of behavior is at hand. The two overarching ways of viewing the norms and values presented in the regulatory documents was either an integrated part of the educational system or as a strain on the profession. The results present four main methods teachers use to deal with pupils exhibiting a norm-breaking behavior. 1) A method of disarming, 2) A method of conversing, 3) A inquisitive method and 4) a method of delegation. Lastly the results show that the teachers operate on three levels in their work against norm-breaking behavior, 1) On a state level in which they interpret the regulatory documents. 2) On a peer level in which they interact with other teachers and their expectations on one another. 3) On a personal level in which the teacher navigates their own norms and values. No definitive answers could be found in this study, but it can contribute to past and future research to give a wider understanding of how teachers handle students exhibit norm-breaking behavior.
