This study relates Alfred Schnittke's Five Aphorisms for Piano (1990) both to an earlier set of piano pieces, Dmitry Shostakovich's Aphorisms (1927), and to the poetry of Joseph Brodsky (1940-96). The study identifies musical and extra-musical connections between Shostakovich and Schnittke and examines the genesis of their musical sets in light of the composers' biographies and writings. Later it explores Schnittke's relationship with Brodsky, to whom the Five Aphorisms was dedicated, and whose poetry was intended to be recited before the performance of each of the five pieces. It analyzes the worldview and philosophy of Schnittke and Brodsky within the context of Postmodernism in order to shed new light upon their artistic intentions. Finally, the study considers the broader question of the relationship between music and poetry in late Soviet artworks.

U tezi je razmatrano<br />&scaron;ezdeset dosada objavljenih eseja, u kojima<br />dominira prevashodno književna, dru&scaron;tvenopolitička<br />i geopolitička problematika. Oni su<br />tematski podeljeni, na osnovu toga interpretirani<br />i analizirani. Istraživanje nastoji da pruži<br />odgovore na pitanja kojim se sve raznovrsnim<br />temama, idejama i umetničkim sredstvima<br />služio ovaj rusko-američko-jevrejski pesnik.<br />Ukazali smo i na recepciju eseja Brodskog - na<br />Zapadu, u Rusiji i kod nas. Disertacija je nastala<br />iz potrebe da se na jednom mestu istraži<br />celokupna esejistika ovog velikog pisca, koja je<br />dosada samo fragmentarno obraĎivana.</p> / <p>This dissertation focusses on the essays Joseph<br />Brodsky wrote in the United States between<br />1971 and 1995, with a close examination of<br />sixty of those essays. The intent of this detailed<br />analysis is to provide answers as to why<br />Brodsky selected particular themes when<br />writing his essays and assess how his work was<br />received by literary critics in the West, Russia,<br />and Serbia. Ultimately, this dissertation is a<br />response to the dearth of focusing on Brodsky&rsquo;s<br />essays, with an emphasis the works in Serbia</p>

The present thesis examines the way E.M. Forster, Lawrence Durrell, W.H. Auden, Stephen Spender, Joseph Brodsky, and James Merrill appropriated C.P. Cavafy in writings that were disseminated and consumed amongst culturally dominant literary circles, and which eventually determined the Greek-Alexandrian poet’s international reputation. I aim to contribute a new perspective on Cavafy, by evading the text-based tradition of reception studies, and proposing an alternative method of discussing the production of Cavafy's canonical status. Inspired by Pierre Bourdieu's sociological theory, I view literary canonization as involving a variety of factors at play beyond creative achievement: in particular, relationships of 'authorial consecration' whereby writers create and circulate cultural capital through their power to legitimize other artists. The critical and fictional texts I analyse perform readings of Cavafy's poetry alongside imaginative portrayals of the poet's life and personality. I take this complementary relationship - between the image of the poet each author projects and their reading of his work - as a starting point to explore the broader ideas of aesthetics and authorial subjectivity that inform the renderings of Cavafy generated by prominent literary figures. Rather than passive recipients of influence, these figures are considered as active agents in the production of 'Cavafy narratives', appropriating the poet according to their own agendas, while also projecting onto him their own position within the cultural field. Eventually, Cavafy becomes a point of insight into the multiplicity of networks and practices involved in the production of cultural currency; in turn, the study of the construction of Cavafy's authorial identity sheds light on the cumulative processes that have defined the way the poet is read and perceived to the present day. This duality of perspective is essential to a study concerned with the cultural contexts framing the poet's steady rise to international fame throughout the 20th century.

The goal of this thesis is to explore the possibility of systematization of the literary hermeneutics as a method of interpretation. Three selective studies focused on the hermeneutic the- ory (namely problem of the language, understanding and textuality) should provide a theoretical and philosophical framework for the interpretative part of this thesis, which is focused on interpretation of a literary text, namely Joseph Brodsky's poem Isaac and Abraham. The thesis also explores con- cept of the literary hermeneutics, which stands between phenomenological-ontological hermeneu- tics and methodological-normanative orientated theory of interpretation. Despite the explicit tension between these two attitudes, there is also a space within the literary hermeneutics for their inspira- tional dialog.
