Rojas Hernández, Ricardo Antonio 01 1900 (has links)
A seed bank is an accumulation of seeds in the soil with the potential to germinate, and is in equilibrium when the amount of seed present does not vary significantly over time. An imbalance in the seed bank can jeopardize the survival of a local population. An increase in altitude is associated with environmental change, generating environmental stress on populations, altering the production and survival of seeds, which can affect the size of seed bank. Determining the balance of the bank at different altitudes helps in part to understand the limitations to the expansion of an invasive species towards greater altitudes. In this study, the equilibrium of the seed bank of Eschscholzia californica, an invasive species in Chile, was analyzed between 1000 and 2300 meters above sea level along the road that unites Santiago and Farellones, central Chile. The balance of the bank was analyzed in two temporal scales: intraannual, measured in the same season before and after the seed rain; and interannual, studied over two years. An imbalance of intra and interannual scale was expected in the seed bank as altitude increases caused by an increase in environmental stress, where at greater altitudes there is greater seed output due to death and/or a lower input by fecundity, while, at low altitudes, the opposite is expected. It was found that the seed bank is in equilibrium for all measured altitudinal ranges at both the inter and intraannual scales. The balance of the seed bank was possibly due to high seed loss due to predation, dispersion, subsidence, or germination, which in total equals the income of seed via the seed rain. / Proyectos Fondecyt 114000, Fondecyt 1180193, ICM-P05-002 (IEB) y PFB-23 por ayudar con el financiamiento del proyecto.
