Something's happening on ABC : queerly reevaluating Twin Peaks and My So-Called Life

Kruger-Robbins, Benjamin 14 October 2014 (has links)
This research reconsiders two ABC programs from the early 1990s, Twin Peaks and My So-Called Life, through the frames of queer-theory based textual analysis, press discourse, and fan reception. I begin by arguing that both programs, which emerged in concert with the solidification of queer studies as an academic field, exist as televisual oddities that provided a temporary space for the exploration of queer subjectivities in primetime; this analysis also invokes the non-normative positioning of showrunners David Lynch and Winnie Holzman based on their previous and subsequent work. Secondly, I posit popular press receptions/retrospectives as undermining the queer centrality of both programs by adhering to heteronormative frameworks such as “quality television.” Lastly, I discuss fan reclamations of both programs through slash fiction and collaborative web forums as illuminating the intrinsic queerness of Twin Peaks and My So-Called Life lost through dominant press narratives. / text

David Lang's The So-Called Laws of Nature: An Analysis with an Emphasis On Compositional Processes

Shinbara, Scott January 2013 (has links)
Compared to the solo percussion works, little academic work has been done in the research and analysis of percussion ensemble compositions. David Lang, a Pulitzer Prize winning composer, has written many prominent works for percussion in both the solo and chamber setting. His work, The So-Called Laws of Nature for percussion quartet, written in 2001, has quickly become standard repertoire. Lang composed the piece with many overlapping processes, patterns that are affected in a pre-defined manner, in line with his totalist style. Using traditional analytical methods would not accurately represent the complexity the work has to offer to the performer. This paper will attempt to find musical significance by breaking down the individual processes. The conclusions from this research are mostly open-ended and, to some extent, subjective. The most effective performers will take the objective analytical information and use it to create an informed, well-intentioned, subjective experience. In this study of The So-Called Laws of Nature the analysis attempts to connect the objective--the data--and the subjective--the analysis of that data--to work together to aid the performer to create the best possible musical and ultimately artistic interpretation.

Žánrová a tématická specifika ruské prózy devadesátých let 20. století / Genre and Thematic Specification of Russian Prose of the Nineties of the 20th Century

Kastnerová, Erika January 2011 (has links)
The desintegration of the USSR, the resulting release of censorship, and the related publication of earlier prohibited texts, as well as the new charakter of the book market entirely tranformed the shape of the literary field of the nineties. This thesis concerns itself with a specific segment of the professional literary production of this period. With its topic, this work aspires to contribute to the serious research of the little explored postcommunist period in the Russian literature. In order to assess and interpret the evolution of opininions in this period of time, the chosen method is the one of commented overview of literary criticism and of literary-theoretical texts published mainly between 1986 and 2000 in Russian publications (mostly in so-called "thick magazines"). The thesis focuses on studies interested in the work of the middle and younger generation of the Russian prose writers, and more precisely on studies concerning the structural aspects of the literary situation in the nineties. On the background of the specific cultural and social situation, the method of the ample commentary is an appropriate way regarding how to interpret the literary theorists' basis of thoughts and opinions, and at the same time how to affect these experts' relationship to the new tendencies in the...

Moving Towards "Pow Wow-Step" / Moving Towards "Pow Wow-Step": Constructions of "the Indian" and A Tribe Called Red's Mobilization of Art as Resistance

DiEmanuele, Elizabeth 11 1900 (has links)
The relationship between Indigenous peoples and Canadians is fraught with political and cultural divides. While Idle No More garnered some momentum to raise awareness of the need for political change, there has yet to be an approach that has popularly engaged and compelled response from Canadians. This thesis project navigates the political potential of artists, who can both accumulate cross-cultural audiences through entertainment and incite change through their vocalizations in performance. Offering a case-study approach to the Indigenous music group, A Tribe Called Red, this project considers their compelling Indigenous space-making work through their performance and celebrity. Drawing from this work, this project offers a navigation between the need for respectful cross-cultural dialogue between Indigenous peoples and Canadians and the actionable change that can occur through popular entertainment and its intimate connections. / Thesis / Master of Arts (MA) / The relationship between Indigenous peoples and Canadians is fraught with political and cultural divides. Representing nation in post-apartheid South Africa film : Invictus, Jerusalema and A small town called Descent.

Haarhoff, Mandisa Roeleene. January 2013 (has links)
This dissertation explores three South African films, Invictus (2009), Jerusalema (2008) and A Small Town Called Descent (2010), as representative of the post-apartheid socio-political and economic South African context. I suggest that these films infer, through narrative portrayal, a change from the celebrated moment of South Africa’s political transition in 1994, with hopes of peace and unity as well as equality, to a time of greater anxieties about South Africa’s difficult realities. The latter include contemporary issues of crime, poverty and the dispossession of hundreds of foreigners in 2008, which are symptomatic of economic inequalities and socio-political instabilities. I follow the narrative journey, and use the film’s respective contexts, as a way of discussing the socio-political and economic problems reflected in the films. Clint Eastwood’s Invictus sets the idea of national unity in motion, highlighting strongly the ‘rainbow nation’ image of South Africa and the notion of the post-apartheid context as an imagined space for equal opportunity. Ralph Ziman’s Jerusalema continues from the ideological optimism set up in Invictus. The film depicts the pragmatic failures of economic equality and (therefore) national unity, suggesting a causal notion that poverty paired with a strong desire for economic success results in crime. The film also deals with issues of xenophobic tensions, reflecting the time of its release and anticipating the xenophobia-centered narrative in Jahmil Qubheka’s A Small Town Called Descent. The latter film resonates with the notions set up in Invictus, tying in to the context depicted in Jerusalema, leading me to conclude that the South Africa in Invictus is gruesomely different from the one in Descent, showing thus a clear move away from the ideology of unity, peace and equality. / Thesis (M.A.)-University of KwaZulu-Natal, Pietermaritzburg, 2013.

Výskyt a forma tzv. novinářského subjuntivu (subjuntivo periodístico) v současných španělských žurnalistických textech / The so called journalistic subjunctive (subjuntivo periodístico) in current Spanish journalistic texts

DOUBKOVÁ, Kristýna January 2016 (has links)
The aim of this thesis is to examine the preference in the use of so-called "journalistic subjunctive" in contemporary Spanish journalistic texts. The theoretical part based on specialist literature describes the Spanish modal system. Greater attention is being paid to the subjunctive, its form and use in individual sentences and in subordinate substantive, adjectival and adverbial clauses. The main part of the theoretical part is the introduction of so-called "journalistic subjunctive", therefore imperfect subjunctive form (Pretérito imperfecto de subjuntivo), which is used instead of the indicative past perfect or past tense (Pretérito pluscuamperfecto de indicativo o Pretérito indefinido). This form of subjunctive is a typical feature of journalistic style, so the very end of the theoretical part is dedicated to the characteristics of the Spanish journalistic texts. The research part is an analysis of the occurrence and form of so-called "journalistic subjunctive" on a selected sample of Spanish journalistic texts, focusing on the context of this phenomenon. The basis for the practical part of the thesis is a corpus of Spanish Royal Academy El Corpus del Espa?ol del Siglo XXI (CORPES XXI), which includes texts created from 2001 to 2012.
