Du 17ème au 20ème siècle, les chansons et cantiques en langue bretonne ont été composés sur timbres, c’est-à-dire sur des airs préexistants, généralement connus du public auquel ils étaient destinés. Les formules désignant ces timbres, précédées de l’expression war don...(sur l’air de…), reprenaient le titre ou l’incipit d’un texte de référence. Le dépouillement des compositions – publiées sur feuilles volantes, recueils, livrets, périodiques ou demeurées à l’état de manuscrits – disséminées dans les bibliothèques publiques et les collections privées a permis d’établir un vaste corpus de plus de 5700 chants comportant ces formules désignatives. L’identification de celles désignées en breton a conduit à la constitution d’un catalogue contenant 873 notices regroupant une ou plusieurs versions musicales du timbre ainsi que l’ensemble des chansons et cantiques retrouvés qui s’y réfèrent. L’analyse de ces timbres, replacés dans leur contexte historique, a également permis, de comprendre selon quels critères ils ont été choisis par les auteurs. C’est donc à travers leur dimension lyrique, rarement étudiée jusqu’à présent, que ce travail souhaite contribuer à une meilleure connaissance des chants profanes et religieux en langue bretonne. / From the 17th to the 20th century, songs and hymns in Breton language were often composed to “timbres”, that is to say they were set to pre-existing music already familiar to the public concerned. The formulas naming these timbres, preceded by the expression war don... (to the tune of...), were referring to the title or the incipit of a song. The perusal of compositions – published in broadsides, books, chapbooks, newspapers or in original manuscripts – scattered in public libraries and private collections helped to establish a large corpus of over 5700 songs bearing such formulas. The identification of those written in Breton has led to the constitution of a catalogue containing 873 entries with one or more musical versions of the tunes together with all the songs referring to them. The analysis of these “timbres”, set in their historical context, has likewise helped to clarify the criteria by which they were chosen by the authors. Through exploring and documenting this lyrical dimension, which has rarely been studied so far, this research aims at giving a better understanding of both secular and religious songs in the Breton language.
