They present several advantages, such as low construction and operating costs, and low sludge production, the anaerobic reactors are an attractive alternative to minimize problematic lack of basic sanitation in urban areas, and also of the rural areas. The anaerobic filters have been widely used in Brazil. It produces an effluent with low concentration of organic matter and solids suspended, besides conserving the nutrients, therefore, it is good for use in irrigation, but the practice must be associated with knowledge of the pathogens presence. The main objective of this study was to evaluate the efficiency of anaerobic filters in removal faecal coliforms and helminth eggs, and to verify if the effluent can be used for agricultural purposes, according to the World Organization of Health (WHO, 1989). The protocol used to enumerate helminths eggs was the modified Bailenger method, (Ayres and Mara, 1996) recommended by WHO for evaluation of raw effluent and treated effluent. The membrane filtration method was utilized to determine the concentrations of faecal coliforms. Three different systems of sewer treatment composed by anaerobic filters were analyzed. The results, in a general analysis, showed that all the researched systems reached a larger removal than 93% to helminth eggs, resulting in an effluent with smaller average than 1 egg/L. One of these systems, Sistema RN, reached a larger removal than 99%, confirming the good performance of the anaerobic filters in removal helminths eggs. Even with low concentrations of eggs in the influent, the filters were capable to remove this parameter efficiently. About faecal coliforms, it was observed for all the researched systems an effluent with 106 CFU/100mL. The high concentrations to faecal coliforms in the effluent just allow reuse for restricted irrigation, in agreement with the guidelines of WHO. Although the researched systems have not removed faecal coliforms efficiently, the results indicated a good efficiency of the anaerobic filters in removal helminth eggs / A tecnologia de reatores anaer?bios para o tratamento de esgoto sanit?rio vem sendo extensivamente desenvolvida no Brasil, e hoje encontra-se praticamente consolidada.

Made available in DSpace on 2014-12-17T15:03:34Z (GMT). No. of bitstreams: 1 MiltonBV.pdf: 1188933 bytes, checksum: 0027ba3da37c2c26ef04d16c288622a2 (MD5) Previous issue date: 2006-11-30 / Waste stabilization ponds are the main technology in use for domestic sewage treatment in Rio Grande do Norte State (RN), northeast Brazil. The are around 80 systems, constructed mainly by municipal city halls, being series comprised by a primary facultative pond followed by two maturation ponds the most used configuration. Due to problems related with the production and destination of sludge and generation of bad odors, the designers have avoided the use of anaerobic lagoons. The majority of systems are rarely monitored to verify their efficiencies and to get new project parameters for future designing. This work has as purpose to make a diagnosis of efficiency of three series of waste stabilization pond series (WSPS) of Jardim Lola 1, Jardim Lola 2 and Beira Rio, located in the North Zone of the city of the Natal/RN, treating domestic raw sewage, on the removal of organic matter and thermotolerant coliform, comparing the operational conditions of the systems this inside of the bands foreseen in the project, through parameters BOD5, QOD, thermotolerant coliforms, dissolved oxygen, pH, temperature, ammoniac nitrogen, total and suspended solids. The work was carried through in the WSPS, all constituted by a primary facultative pond followed by two maturation ponds. Socioeconomic characteristics of population are predominantly low and all the plants are very near of the contributing basins. The series were monitored from of May the November of 2002, totalizing 20 collections of grab samples of raw sewage and ponds effluents between 8:00 and 9:50 h. The main aspect to be detached by the results was the great concentration of organic matter (BOD and COD) and microorganisms the raw sewage which were around two times more concentrated than those values foreseen one in project. Considering all series the highest removals of organic matter were observed in system Beira Rio (84 and 78% of BOD and COD, respectively), which presented high hydraulic detention time (TDH = 89 days). On the other hand, Jardim Lola 1 and Jardim Lola 2 presented a much lower values of HDT (36 days and 18 days respectively) and their removals of BOD and COD were the same (76% and 60%, respectively). The Beira Rio WSPS, was the most efficient verified in relation to solids and ammonia, proving the great influence of the operational variables such as HDT and applied surface organic loadings on the performance of pond series.

Wingert, Carine January 2012 (has links)
Several conditions during all stages of food production can lead to the introduction of pathogenic micro-organisms in food. This fact may be relevant in the food service located in shopping malls by limited physical area, insufficient number of equipment and volume of meals served. The aim of this study was to evaluate this type of establishment for compliance with good practices and verify the presence of organic matter and residual bacterial contamination in refrigerators that had been submitted to routine cleaning. Twenty establishments located in a shopping center from Porto Alegre were included in the study. In each establishment a Checklist for Good Practice for Food Services, provided by Resoltuion No. 78 published on January 28th 2009 (CEVS), was aplied, and three samples were collected at monthly intervals from the inner wall of the refrigerator on the day following the routine cleaning. The samples were evaluated by the Clean Trace system (3M) for the presence of Listeria sp., Total Coliforms and Escherichia coli. The data resulting from application of the Checklist showed that 55% of establishments didn’t attained the minimum score (> 75%) to be classified satisfactory. From de samples taken on the refrigerator’s inner wall, 95% (57/60) demonstrated the presence of residual organic. Nevertheless, microbiological analyzes showed absence of Listeria sp., and isolation of Total Coliforms and E. coli in 8.3% and 1.6% of the samples, respectively. There was no association between the classification of the establishment (satisfactory / unsatisfactory) and the presence of residual organic matter or total coliform in the refrigerator. The results demonstrate the need for constant review and monitoring and improvement of sanitizing procedures of equipment in food service.

ComparaÃÃo da qualidade bacteriolÃgica da Ãgua marinha e da areia seca e molhada de duas praias do litoral leste do Cearà / Comparison of the bacteriological quality of the sea water and the dry and wet sand to two beaches of the east coast of CearÃ

Denise Terezinha Lippmann Monteiro 24 June 2013 (has links)
The microbiological quality of the water and sand on sea shores, especially in the vicinity of urbanized areas and tourist facilities, requires careful and permanent monitoring. An array of diseases may be transmitted by pathogenic microorganisms in aquatic environments to which children, the elderly and the immuno deficient tend to be particularly susceptible. The present study is a quantitative evaluation of the bacterial microbiota of sea water and wet and dry sand collected at two points (Iguape and Presidio) along the coast of CearÃ, Northeastern Brazil, once a week between February and May 2012. The study parameters included MPN of thermotolerant coliforms (CT), Escherichia coli (EC) and Enterococcus spp. (ENT) (sand and water), and yeast count (YC) (sand only). The first four parameters ( CT, EC and ENT) were quantified with the multiple tube method, while YC was determined with standard plate count. The results obtained for sea water samples were compared with the maximum contaminant levels (MCLs) specified in Resolution #274/2000 issued by CONAMA [Brazilian Council for the Environment], while the results obtained for dry and wet sand were compared with the MCLs specified in the Portuguese legislation (in the absence of equivalent Brazilian regulations). Both sea water and dry and wet sand were found to be more contaminated at Iguape than at Presidio. At both locations, dry sand was more contaminated than wet sand. Yeast counts were also higher in samples from Iguape. Dry sand from Iguape yielded higher ENT and YC values than dry sand from Presidio. The local health authorities are advised to improve the monitoring of the microbiological quality of the water and sand at these locations and identify possible sources of contamination.

No. of bitstreams: 1 Andrea Paiva Botelho Lapenda Moura.pdf: 326144 bytes, checksum: 620eeb1d70babd2fa43af8e1560d7095 (MD5) Previous issue date: 2006-02-20 / Conselho Nacional de Pesquisa e Desenvolvimento Científico e Tecnológico - CNPq / Evaluation of microbiological quality of chilled and in natural goat meat sold in public/private markets and supermarkets of Recife concerning Staphylococcus aureus counting, total and thermotolerant coliforms, identification and typing of Salmonella spp, was the objective of this study. Antimicrobial sensibility profile in vitro of Staphylococcus aureus and Salmonella spp samples and the correlation between the simultaneous presence of faecal coliforms and Salmonella spp. were also performed. The study was carried out at six public/private markets and nine supermarkets of Recife, which were selected according to the administrative division of Local Authority Healthy General Office in six sanitary districts. A total of 24 samples of goat meat, 14 proceeded from public/private markets in natura and 10 chilled ones from supermarkets. Samples were processed using methodologies recommended by the Agriculture, Pecuary and Provision Ministry. Results demonstrated that 11 samples (45,83%) presented positive coagulasis staphylococcus (SCP) varying from 6.7 x 103 to 1.4 x 106 UFC/g, corresponding to 27 isolated from a total of 89. In total coliforms analyses, five samples (20.83%) presented satisfactory sanitary conditions and 19 (79.16%) had countings varying from 4.3 x 103 to 3.7 x 107, thermotolerants coliforms were detected in 15 (62.5%), which countings varied from 2 x 104 to 2.5 x 107 UFC/g and nine samples (37.5%) presented satisfactory sanitary conditions. Presence of Salmonella spp., was confirmed at seven samples (29.17%) in which eight sorovares were typed: four (50%) Salmonella enterica subsp houtenae (O:53), two (25%) S. Anatum, one (12.50%) S.Rubislaw and one (12, 50%) S. Derby. No correlation was observed among coliforms and Salmonella presure. Antimicrobial profile sensibility showed that S. aureus were sensitive to norfloxacin and vancomicin (100%), tetraciclin and sulpha + trimetoprim (96.30%) and oxacilin (87.50%) and 100 % of Salmonella spp. samples were sensitive norfloxacin, 75% sulpha + trimetoprim and 62.5% tetraciclin. It is concluded that goat meat sold at markets and supermarkets of Recife presented undesirable microbiological patterns emphasizing the importance of a strong supervision at the productive goat meat chain as well as a revision of the Resolution of Collective Management from the National Agency of Sanitary Vigilance, (RDC, n°12/2001) which does not establish microbiological patterns for the coliforms and Staphylococcus spp countings in chilled and in natura goat meat.

Avaliação da resistência de microrganismos patogênicos à desinfecção sequencial com ozônio-radiação ultravioleta e cloro-radiação ultravioleta / Resistance evaluation of pathogenic microorganisms to sequential disinfection with ozone-ultraviolet radiation and chlorine-ultraviolet radiation

Juliana Lourenção 05 June 2009 (has links)
The removal of pathogenic microorganisms through disinfection is a necessity to decrease the incidence of diseases in the human population related to fecal pollution. Sequential disinfection has a great potential on the removal of microorganisms when compared to conventional disinfection (single disinfectant). This work compared the resistance of indicators microorganisms of bacteria - E. coli and total coliforms - and spore-forming bacteria - Clostridium perfringens concerning the sequential and conventional disinfections. The sequential disinfection initially employed chlorine followed by ultraviolet radiation and ozone followed by ultraviolet radiation. The conventional disinfection utilized the same disinfectants individually applied in sanitary sewage previously treated in UASB reactor. The tests were made in batch. The chlorine dosages applied were 10, 20 and 30 mg\'CL IND.2\'/L; ozone were 5,6; 11 and 16,5 mg\'O IND.3\'/L, both for the contact times 10, 20 and 30 minutes. In the sequential disinfection with chlorine dosages of 1, 5 and 10 Wh/\'M POT.3\' of UV radiation were applied; with ozone, the dosages of radiation varied from 0,5 to 10 Wh/\'M POT.3\'. In the sequential disinfection with UV-chlorine were inactived 2,5 and 5,2 log of C. perfringens and total coliforms respectively, against 1,5 and 4,2 log in the conventional disinfection for the same microorganisms. In the chlorine disinfection, the decreasing resistance order was: C. perfringens > total coliforms > E. coli. In the ozone disinfection followed by UV, C. perfringens manifested more resistance and, in some assays, E. coli was more resistant than total coliforms. The action of ozone was outstanding for the improvement of treated sewage quality assessed by the decreasing of total suspended solids concentration, total solids absorbance at a wavelength of 254 nm and of DQO, differently from the chlorine sewage in which occurred an increase of the values of the physical-chemical variables. The ultraviolet radiation action was potentiated when sequentially applied to chlorine and to ozone.

Water quality in the Koga Irrigation Project, Ethiopia: A snapshot of general quality parameters / Vattenkvalitet i konstbevattningsprojektet i Koga, Etiopien: En överblick av allmänna kvalitetsparametrar

Eriksson, Simon January 2012 (has links)
The government of Ethiopia has initialized an investment in the agricultural sector in order to secure food production for a growing population. The Koga Irrigation and Water Management Project is a pilot project and hopes are that crop production will double. Water quality is an important factor to meet these expectations. The aim of this study is to assess the irrigation water’s biological and chemical quality by using locally available methods and compare the results with international water quality standards pertaining to agricultural use as well as human and animal consumption. The water was sampled and analyzed for biological, chemical and physical parameters. The most important parameters were thermotolerant coliforms, electrical conductivity and turbidity. The first part of the thesis was a literature study dealing with the Koga project and the water use in the area. The second part focuses on 17 water samples that were taken within an individual command area: irrigation canals, fish pond and drinking water well. The samples were then analyzed at the water quality and treatment lab at the University of Bahir Dar. The results were compared to guideline values for livestock, crop, fish and human use recommended by the World Health Organization (WHO). All water samples, including the drinking water from the groundwater well, were contaminated with thermotolerant coliforms and had a relatively high turbidity. Additionally, the irrigation water contained levels of boron which were higher than recommended for crop production. Electrical conductivity values were overall satisfactory. These results give only an idea of the overall water quality within the Koga Irrigation Project. More samples need to be taken in order to draw any concrete conclusions and provide any recommendations.

The fate of microbial contaminants in the subsurface with a South African case study

Rajkumar, Yasmin January 2009 (has links)
Magister Scientiae - MSc / The time bound agenda of the Millennium Development Goals (MDG's) aims at reducing poverty, extending gender equality and advancing opportunities for health and education by addressing current and future water resource and sanitation needs. In many rural areas of South Africa, the cost implication of routing surface water supplies and providing water borne sewerage may far exceed the budgets of local water service authorities. This has resulted in a major thrust in service provision via localised sources, mainly boreholes and springs as well as on site sanitation options. Whilst the National Water Act (Act 36 of 1998) mandates the South African government to provide potable water to all citizens in an equitable manner, this needs to be balanced against the preservation of the country’s water resources both quantitatively and qualitatively to ensure sustainability. It is imperative that this fine balance between protection and effecting societal demands and economic development through large-scale water provision be maintained, as successful strategising will be resultant of integrated social, economic and environmental issues especially in economically developing countries. In order to fulfil the mandate of the NWA, policies and strategies for effective protection and use of groundwater resources have been drawn up and are in the process of being drawn up by the national Department of Water Affairs and Forestry (DWAF). The major scope of research in this thesis stems from feasibility studies commissioned by the DWAF for the implementation of a groundwater protection zoning policy for the management and protection of groundwater resource quality. The research work focuses on specifically the microbiological zone of protection and attempts to determine the fate of various pathogens that emanate from on site sanitation facilities as they move through the subsurface. The research was predominantly proposed as a desktop collation and analysis of existing published data however; it was later decided to include a local case study site. / South Africa

Development and Evaluation of an Aquifer Capability Screening Tool Pilot Study: Clarence-Rockland, Ontario

Morton, Samuel R. January 2015 (has links)
Increased development pressure led the United Counties of Prescott and Russell to seek development of a GIS-based Aquifer Capability Screening Tool (ACST). A Pilot ACST, developed by a project partner within this study, was made for the City of Clarence-Rockland, Ontario, and consists of several maps showing delineated areas where there may be groundwater limitations in terms of quality or quantity. This study gathered the chemistry data needed for the Pilot ACST from 127 domestic dug and drilled wells. The results showed exceedances of provincial health and aesthetic standards, which were then used to delineate maps for the Pilot ACST. An evaluation of the necessary data source and sampling scale for ACST development revealed that data gathered from existing reports was inadequate for various reasons and sampling scale should be on a grid 2x2 km2 or smaller. Further recommendations were provided for future ACST development studies.
